By foregrounding the role of the audience in creating meaning and by minimizing the “show” as a coherent work, I reconnect musicals to their roots in comedy by way of Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of carnival and reduced laughter. The audiences I study are kids, queers, and collectors, an alliterative set of people whose gender identities and expressions all depart from or fall outside of the normative binary.     The Wizard Behind Oz and Other Stories: A Research Guide for L. Frank Baum By: Karla Lyles October 2006 2 Introduction: In 1900 Lyman Frank Baum published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a phenomenal literary success that inspired posthumous writings to continue the Oz series into more than 40 books (including the originals). Although Baum published several additional series of books (most pseudonymously written) and other individual writings, he is best known for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A considerable number of books, articles, dissertations, and electronic resources containing information about the Oz masterpiece are available, supplying a wealth of information for the curious Baum fan or avid Baum researcher. To locate information about Baum and his writings I consulted several search engines, including ABELL, British Library Catalogue, Copac, DLB, MLAIB, Wilson, and WorldCat, as well as referred to footnotes in printed materials I obtained. I have provided references to the databases I located each of the materials in within the brackets at the end of the citation entries, allowing the reader to consult those databases if he/she so chooses to pursue further research. For those individuals who may be unfamiliar with the acronyms of some of the databases, ABELL is the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature, DLB is the Dictionary of Literary Biography, and MLAIB is the MLA International Bibliography. I also relied substantially on the services of Interlibrary Loan to secure materials that are not available in Evans Library at Texas A & M University, and I recommend the use of Interlibrary Loan in conducting research to allow for the acquisition of materials that would otherwise remain unobtainable.

Meyer, my mentor during more than a quarter century in Oz. Introduction Founded in 1957 by Justin G. Schiller, The International Wizard of Oz Club brings together thousands of diverse individuals interested in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and this classic’s author, L. Frank Baum. The forty-four volumes of The Baum Bugle to-date play an important rôle for the club and its members. Despite the general excellence of the journal, the lack of annual or cumulative indices, was soon recognized as a hindrance by those pursuing research related to The Wizard of Oz. The late Fred E. Otto (1925-1994) accepted the challenge of creating a Bugle index proposed by Jerry Tobias. With the assistance of Patrick Maund, Peter E.     ABSTRACT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN: PATRIARCHY AND THE WIZARD OF OZ by Andrea J. Chalfin This paper deals with the social situations and gender codes that led to the production and subsequent mass consumption of the 1939 MGM film, The Wizard of Oz. The central issue of the analysis is the way in which the film serves to support social gender codes. By outlining patriarchal control in the film industry and utilizing an ideological and theoretical backdrop, The Wizard of Oz fits the mold of a “woman’s film.” Its recuperative qualities serve to reinforce social gender roles of patriarchal control for the audience as well as Dorothy, and the battle between good and evil is actually an illustration of proper and improper behavior for women, as defined by patriarchal society. With Dorothy as the negotiator between the two, her journey is about learning her proper role and realizing there really is “no place like home,” a physical locality to which she is now happily bound. Frank Baum and his successors, and the fourteenth written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. It was Illustrated by John R. Neill. This book features yet another island which floats in the sky: Umbrella Island, which flies by virtue of a huge umbrella with lifting and shielding powers. The king is not very good at steering the flying island; he bumps it into a giant's head. For compensation, Loxo, the great brute, demands the King's daughter Gureeda, whom he mistakes for a boy, as a servant to lace his huge boots. However, he grants the Umbrella Islanders three months to train the child to be a bootlacer. Meanwhile, the boy Speedy (from The Yellow Knight of Oz ) returns for another adventure. While inspecting a dinosaur skeleton, Speedy is blown by a geyser into the air. The skeleton comes magically to life and becomes Terrybubble, a live dinosaur skeleton. Terrybubble and Speedy land on Umbrella Island. Speedy develops a friendship with Princess Gureeda. He also becomes friendly with the island's resident wizard, Waddy. An unscrupulous minister, however, notices that Speedy and Gureeeda look very much alike and could pass for fraternal twins. [1] He hatches a plot to compensate the giant by handing Speedy over to him as a slave instead of Gureeda. Terrybubble learns of this plot, and he parachutes off the island with Speedy and Gureeda.

    2021 Summer Reading List- Entering 7th The purpose of the Eagle’s View Academy summer reading program is to encourage students to read and appreciate classic and contemporary literary works. Please note that the requirements for titles and number of books vary from grade to grade and class to class.
