Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 16, No. 2 (2020) Monuments of Terrorism: (De)Selecting Memory and Symbolic Exchange at the Interface Between Westminster and Raqqa Theodore Price Contemporary conflict is conducted across multiple visual fronts, as the old visual symbols of conventional warfare and remembrance are increasingly replaced with digital images. Focusing on three events in the summer of 2015: the attack on tourists in Tunisia, the blowing up of the Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria, and the construction of a replica of the destroyed Arch of Triumph from Palmyra in Trafalgar Square, London, this paper details the symbolic exchange between the so-called Islamic State and western governments. Through an examination of the visual representation of violence enacted towards individual holidaymakers and ancient tourist sites, this paper details how the attack on a holiday resort in Tuni- sia was recast through a master narrative of war where the military repatriation of civilians represented the dead tourists as fallen soldiers. It will examine the visual record of the destruction of the Temple of Bel, by the Islamic State (ISIS), arguing that this action gained international legitimacy through the validation and complicity of the visual frame provided by satellite images from the United Na- tions. Finally, it will discuss the replication of the Arch of Triumph, from Palmyra, in Trafalgar Square as a further example of the instrumentalisation of counter- iconoclasm. In this paper I suggest that the new monuments to terrorism are images of the events themselves, rather than simply physical memorials built for remem- brance, and that these new monuments to terrorism circulating within the virtual landscapes of the internet, become the new sites of collective memorialisation Theodore Price is a London-based artist, curator and researcher whose practice is located at the intersection between art and politics. -

Introduction 1. The present report is the forty-first submitted pursuant to paragraph 17 of Security Council resolution 2139 (2014), paragraph 10 of resolution 2165 (2014), paragraph 5 of resolution 2191 (2014), paragraph 5 of resolution 2258 (2015) and paragraph 5 of resolution 2332 (2016), in which the Council requested the Secretary-General to report, every 30 days, on the implementation of the resolutions by all parties to the conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic. 2. The information contained herein is based on the data available to United Nations agencies, from the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic and from other Syrian and open sources. Data from United Nations agencies on their humanitarian deliveries have been reported for the period from 1 to 30 June 2017. Box 1 Key points in June 2017 (1) The memorandum on the creation of de-escalation areas in the Syrian Arab Republic, signed by Iran (Islamic Republic of), the Russian Federation and Turkey on 4 May, continued to show a positive trend of reducing violence; however, hostilities have continued to be reported, especially in Dar‘a and eastern Ghutah, and in areas held by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). (2) Only three inter-agency cross-line convoys were dispatched in June. Of these, only one, a convoy to east Harasta, Misraba and Mudayra on 19 June, reached a besieged area. -

life and writings of xu hui paul w. kroll The Life and Writings of Xu Hui (627–650), Worthy Consort, at the Early Tang Court mong the women poets of the Tang dynasty (618–907) surely the A.best known are Xue Tao 薛濤 (770–832), the literate geisha from Shu 蜀, and the volatile, sometime Daoist priestess Yu Xuanji 魚玄機 (ca. 844–870?). More interesting strictly as a poet than these two fig- ures are Li Ye 李冶 who was active during the late-eighth century and whose eighteen remaining poems show more range and skill than either Xue Tao or Yu Xuanji, and the “Lady of the Flower Stamens” (“Hua- rui furen” 花蕊夫人) whose 157 heptametric quatrains in the “palace” style occupy all of juan 798 in Quan Tang shi 全唐詩, even though she lived in the mid-tenth century and served at the court of the short-lived kingdom of Later Shu 後蜀.1 Far more influential in her day than any of these, though barely two dozen of her poems are now preserved, was the elegant Shangguan Wan’er 上官婉兒 (ca. 664–710), granddaughter of the executed courtier and poet Shangguan Yi 上官儀 (?–665) who had paid the ultimate price for opposing empress Wu Zhao’s 吳曌 (625–705) usurpation of imperial privileges.2 After the execution of Shangguan Yi and other members of his family, Wan’er, then just an infant, was taken into the court as a sort of expiation by empress Wu.3 By the end I should like to thank David R. -

TRIBES, CLANS AND FAMILIES The problem of the social structure at Palmyra has already been met by many authors who have focused their interest mainly to the study of the tribal organisation'. In dealing with this subject, it comes natural to attempt a distinction amongst the so-called tribes or family groups, for they are so well and widely attested. On the other hand, as shall be seen, it is not easy to define exactly what a tribe or a clan meant in terms of structure and size and which are the limits to take into account in trying to distinguish them. At the heart of Palmyrene social organisation we find not only individuals or families but tribes or groups of families, in any case groups linked by a common (true or presumed) ancestry. The Palmyrene language expresses the main gentilic grouping with phd2, for which the Greek corresponding word is ØuAi in the bilingual texts. The most common Palmyrene formula is: dynwpbd biiyx... 'who is from the tribe of', where sometimes the word phd is omitted. Usually, the term bny introduces the name of a tribe that either refers to a common ancestor or represents a guild as the Ben Komarê, lit. 'the Sons of the priest' and the Benê Zimrâ, 'the sons of the cantors' 3 , according to a well-established Semitic tradition of attaching the guilds' names to an ancestor, so that we have the corporations of pastoral nomads, musicians, smiths, etc. -

General Information Page 15 2 FOREWORDS OF THE PUBLICATION In recent years, some of the most splendid cities of the ancient world – Mosul, Aleppo, Palmyra, Leptis Magna – have come to be associated with the wanton destruction of their vestiges by fanaticism and war. These ancient sites, some of them completely laid to waste, bear witness to recent and current conflicts that affect us directly. A virtual journey to the sites reveals the disastrous consequences of war on every level, inclu- ding culture. These consequences reach far beyond the regrettable loss of outstanding artefacts of long-gone civilizations. The intentional destruction of cultural heritage constitutes an attempt to obliterate cultural identity. The historical memory of the multireligious sites stands for those achievements of civilization that are now massive- ly threatened by war and terror. While each of the four emblematic sites, which visitors to the exhibition can explo- re in virtual models and reconstructions, tells its own story, they have one thing in common: they embody the universality of our concept of culture, which prizes the individuality and diversity of the remains of numerous ancient civilizations without subjecting them to religious or national hierarchies. -
Xue Susu (1573-Ca.1650) Was a Courtesan Who Lived in the Final Years of the Ming Dynasty

She was a multi-faceted artist, known for her painting, poetry and heroic personal- ity. An active participant in literati culture for most of her life, Xue’s body of work contains sev- eral outstanding paintings which demonstrate her grasp of the artistic concerns of literati painting practice at that time. Modern scholarship of Chinese women artists is a growing field, and it is now unthinkable to exclude women in the broad category of Chinese painting. However, examinations of individual artists, have been limited. For example, Xue Susu has been the subject of articles by Tseng Yu- ho (Betty Ecke); she was featured in an encyclopedic exhibition of Chinese women painters titled Views from Jade Terrace: Chinese Women Artists 1300-1912, and she is listed in several survey texts of Chinese art history.1 These considerations of Xue Susu demonstrate that modern scholarship acknowledges her as a talented painter. However, Xue is usually only considered in aggregate with other women painters with the grouping, gender being the primary identifier for artistic identity. The problem at hand then becomes that the majority of Xue Susu’s surviving work is dissimilar in stylistic choice to the general group of female painters of her era. -

Nostalgia and Resistance: Gender and the Poetry of Chen Yinke Wai-yee Li 李惠儀 Harvard University On June 2, 1927, the great scholar and poet Wang Guowei 王國維 (1877- 1927) drowned himself at Lake Kunming in the Imperial Summer Palace in Beijing. There was widespread perception at the time that Wang had committed suicide as a martyr for the fallen Qing dynasty, whose young deposed emperor had been Wang’s student. However, Chen Yinke 陳寅恪 (1890-1969), Wang’s friend and colleague at the Qinghua Research Institute of National Learning, offered a different interpretation in the preface to his “Elegy on Wang Guowei” 王觀堂先生輓詞并序: For today’s China is facing calamities and crises without precedents in its several thousand years of history. With these calamities and crises reaching ever more dire extremes, how can those whose very being represents a condensation and realization of the spirit of Chinese culture fail to identify with its fate and perish along with it? This was why Wang Guowei could not but die.1 Two years later, Chen elaborated upon the meaning of Wang’s death in a memorial stele: He died to make manifest his will to independence and freedom. This was neither about personal indebtedness and grudges, nor about the rise or fall of one ruling house… His writings may sink into oblivion; his teachings may yet be debated. But this spirit of independence and freedom of thought…will last for eternity with heaven and earth.2 Between these assertions from 1927 and 1929 is a rhetorical elision of potentially different positions.
