E-mail: [email protected] 4Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract A new genus and species of damselfly, Burmagrion marjanmatoki, gen. et sp. nov., is described from Early Cretaceous Burmese amber. It is attributed to the basal stem group of Coenagrionoidea. The inclusion of five wings from the same species suggests that the amber piece contains the remains of a mating pair of damselflies. Key words: damselfly, Coenagrionoidea, fossil insect, Cenomanian Introduction Even though numerous Odonata have been described from Cretaceous sedimentary deposits, including representatives from at least 16 families from the Lower Cretaceous Santana Formation in Brazil (Bechly 1996a, 1998b, 2007, 2010) and numerous taxa from Lower Cretaceous deposits in England (Jarzembowski et al. 1998) and France (Nel et al. 2008), and even though odonate fossils are well represented in Tertiary amber (Bechly 1993, 1996b, 1998a, 2000; Bechly & Wichard 2008), descriptions of damselflies in Cretaceous amber were very rare until the recent boom of paleoentomological studies on Burmese amber. -

The precise systematic position of this species within the former Neotropical Protoneuridae has been the subject of debate, with previous results from a phyloge- netic analysis based on morphology suggesting that the genus Microneura should be placed within the genus Protoneura. Here, we used mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequencing to disentangle the taxo- nomic status of this species. Our results show that Microneura belongs to the Protoneura clade, thus making Microneura a junior synonym of Protoneura. Finally, we provide notes on some observations of emergence and ovipositing behaviour of this species. -

An Overview of Molecular Odonate Studies, and Our Evolutionary Understanding of Dragonfly and Damselfly (Insecta: Odonata) Behavior

Ware Department of Biological Sciences, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 195 University Ave., Boyden Hall, Newark, NJ, 07102, USA (Received 18 November 2010; final version received 3 April 2011) Among insects, perhaps the most appreciated are those that are esthetically pleasing: few capture the interest of the public as much as vibrantly colored dragonflies and damselflies (Insecta: Odonata). These remarkable insects are also extensively studied. Here, we review the history of odonate systematics, with an emphasis on discrepancies among studies. Over the past century, relationships among Odonata have been reinterpreted many times, using a variety of data from wing vein morphology to DNA. Despite years of study, there has been little consensus about odonate taxonomy. In this review, we compare odonate molecular phylogenetic studies with respect to gene and model selection, optimality criterion, and dataset completeness. These differences are discussed in relation to the evolution of dragonfly behavior. The order Odonata comprises three suborders: Anisozygoptera, Anisoptera, and Zygoptera. There are approximately 6000 species of Odonata described worldwide (Ardila-Garcia & Gregory, 2009). Of the three suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera are by far the most commonly observed and collected, because there are only two known species of Anisozygoptera under the genus Epiophlebia. All odonate nymphs are aquatic, with a few rare exceptions such as the semi-aquatic Pseudocordulia (Watson, 1983), and adults are usually found near freshwater ponds, marshes, rivers (von Ellenrieder, 2010), streams, and lakes (although some species occur in areas of mild salinity; Corbet, 1999). -
A Synopsis of the Neotropical Species of 'Aeshna

A synopsis of the Neotropical species of ‘Aeshna’ Fabricius: The Genus Rhionaeschna Förster (Odonata: Aeshnidae). – Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 146: 67- 207, figs. 1-468, tabs. 1-3. [ISSN 0040-7496]. Published 1 June 2003. This study includes a revisionary, phylogenetic and biogeographical analysis of Neotropical com- ponents of Aeshna Fabricius characterized by a midventral tubercle on abdominal sternum I. Phylogenetic relationships of the Neotropical species of Aeshna were inferred based on 39 adult characters. Ingroup taxa included 68 out of the 85 species currently assigned to Aeshna, and two species each of Andaeshna De Marmels and Anaciaeschna Selys. Oreaeschna dictatrix Lieftinck was chosen as outgroup. The strict consensus tree obtained after successive weighting revealed that Aeshna is not monophyletic; some of its species are more closely related to Anaciaeschna or Andaeschna. The name Aeshna should consequently be restricted to the Holarctic group includ- ing the type species Aeshna grandis Fabricius. In the present synopsis the generic name Rhion- aeschna Förster is assigned to the New World group characterized by the presence of a conical tu- bercle on abdominal sternum I, comprising 39 species formerly assigned to Aeshna. The synopsis includes keys to adults of both sexes, diagnoses, biological notes, distribution maps and more than 400 diagnostic illustrations. Rhionaeschna demarmelsi sp. n. is described, R. maita Förster is considered a junior synonym of R. brevifrons (Hagen), R. peralta (Ris) is considered a valid species, not a synonym of R. -

A New Species of Epigomphus from Mexico (Odonata : Gomphidae)
ENTOMOLOGISCHE BERICHTEN, DEEL 41, 1.IV.1981 61 A new species of Epigomphus from Mexico (Odonata : Gomphidae) by JEAN BELLE ABSTRACT. — Epigomphus paulsoni new species (tf holotype: Stream 27.2 mi N. of Ocozocoautla, Chiapas, Mexico) is described, and its affinities and variations are discussed. INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT During his field work in Mexico, Dr. Dennis R. Paulson (Seattle) collected five males of a form of Epigomphus which he determined as an undescribed one. Shortly after my description of Epigomphus clavatus from Guatemala (Belle, 1980), Dr. Paulson sent to me four of these males for studying and reporting, and for this privilege I herewith wish to thank him very much. The present species is associated with its discoverer. Epigomphus paulsoni spec. nov. (figures 1-12) Material. — Mexico: Veracruz, stream at Coyame (1300'), 1.VII.1965, 2 $ (paratypes), Dennis & Mary Lynn Paulson leg.; Chiapas, stream 27.2 mi N. of Ocozocoautla (2000'), 21.VII. 1965, 2 $ (holotype and paratype), Dennis R. Paulson leg. The holotype is deposited in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods, Gainesville, Florida. Two paratypes (one from Veracruz and one from Chiapas) are in the collection Paulson, Seattle, Washington; one paratype is in the author’s collection. Description. — Male (holotype). Total length 52 mm; abdomen 40 mm (including caudal appendages); hind wing 34 mm; costal edge of pterostigma in fore wing 3.8 mm. Pale colours greenish white, becoming brown-yellow on abdominal segments 3 to 7. Face blackish brown but labrum with a large, pale basal spot on either side, and facial lobes of postclypeus pale. Base of mandibles pale externally. -
