May 17-19, 2013 Boston University Events & Conferences 225 Bay State Road Boston, Massachusetts 02215 TO: All Degree Candidates SUBJECT: Commencement Weekend - May 17-19, 2013 Boston University requests that all students who have completed the requirements for a degree or certificate participate in the All-University Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 19, as well as the appropriate School or College convocation. The summary information presented in this memo is to help you as you prepare for Commencement Weekend. For more detailed information regarding the many aspects of Commencement Weekend, please visit the website at www.bu.edu/commencement, like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter. If you have any additional questions, please call 617-353-2248. SCHEDULE Baccalaureate Service: Sunday, May 19, 11 am – Marsh Chapel All-University Commencement: Sunday, May 19, 1 pm – Nickerson Field, rain or shine School/College Convocations: May 17-19. Day, time, location, and coordinator listed on pages 2-3 ALL-UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT Assembly for Procession: Degree candidates from all Schools/Colleges are to reach the line-up areas via Harry Agganis Way. To ensure that you process onto Nickerson Field and are seated with fellow degree candidates from your School or College, you must reach the entrance to Harry Agganis Way by 12:15 pm. At the entrance to Harry Agganis Way, you will find a walkway reserved for degree candidates only. At this point, you should leave your guests and head directly down the walkway to locate your School or College area. Once you reach your School or College assembly area, University marshals will assist you with lining up. Your guests may reach Nickerson Field by continuing down a separate walkway, reserved for all guests, on Harry Agganis Way. Please note: Doctoral candidates from all Schools and all candidates from LAW, MED, SPH, SDM, SSW, GMS, and STH will be grouped together, not by individual Schools. Nickerson Field Protocol: Items such as champagne, balloons, beach balls or any similar paraphernalia will not be allowed onto Nickerson Field. Our security staff has been instructed to confiscate these objects. This will allow the ceremony to proceed without interruptions. For the consideration of others, please turn off all cellular phones and other paging devices. Spectator Seating: There is no reserved seating at Nickerson Field, except seating for guests with disabilities. The stands tend to fill quickly; therefore it is a good idea to arrive at Nickerson Field no later than noon. It is not advisable to arrange to meet family members or guests at Nickerson Field before the ceremony as the number of guests is very large and attendees are asked not to congregate outside on Harry Agganis Way. Please remember that this is an outdoor ceremony. Previous Commencement days have seen temperatures ranging from 50 to 90 degrees. Be prepared for all types of weather conditions. DIPLOMAS Diplomas are awarded to degree candidates at the individual School/College convocations and not at the All-University Commencement Exercises. Diplomas will be awarded to graduates who have met their academic degree requirements and who have completed payment of their account balances with Student Accounting Services by April 30, 2013. The University will make every attempt to ensure that diplomas are awarded to students who have met academic requirements but have not completed payment until after April 30; however, this is not guaranteed. Degree candidates are asked to access the Student Link at www.bu.edu/link to verify and/or update diploma information, Commencement attendance information, and review your student account. CAPS & GOWNS Degree candidates who did not place an online order for delivery or in-store pick-up must visit Barnes & Noble at BU, beginning April 28, to purchase their academic regalia or rent for doctoral candidates. Please be advised that in order to ensure you have the correct academic dress for your ceremony, with respect to color and size, you should plan to visit the bookstore to purchase (or rent if a doctoral candidate) your regalia no later than May 11. Candidates for the bachelor’s or master’s degree must purchase keepsake academic dress. The cost for a complete bachelor’s package is $78. The complete master’s package is $113. As part of all academic dress packages, each graduate will receive ten printed general announcements of the Commencement Exercises at Nickerson Field; additional announcements are available for purchase. These announcements do not limit the number of guests you may bring to the Nickerson Field ceremony. For doctoral candidates who place orders in the Bookstore after April 30, the rental fee for the complete doctoral package is $95. Please note that all rentals must be returned prior to May 23 to avoid late charges, and transcripts will be withheld by the University from any student failing to return rental items. PARKING All campus parking lots will be open throughout the weekend unless otherwise noted. Due to the anticipated traffic on Commonwealth Avenue during Commencement Weekend, you are urged to use public transportation. In addition, the University will provide shuttle bus service along Commonwealth Avenue throughout the weekend. Please note: due to construction, general parking on Babcock Street and adjacent streets will not be permitted over the weekend. BU Parking & Transportation Services will begin taking requests for reserved HP Commencement parking on April 1. Additional information and instructions will be posted on the Commencement website. ACCESS AND SERVICES FOR GUESTS AND GRADUATES WITH DISABILITIES Accessible seating is available for guests with disabilities and their companions and/or family members at the All-University Commencement Exercises at Nickerson Field as well as at individual school/college convocations. For the All-University Commencement on May 19, a sign language interpreter and a large screen, real time, open caption video feed will be available at Nickerson Field. A limited number of wheelchairs will be available on Sunday, May 19 at the Disability Services tent located near the entrance to the Case Center on Babcock Street. Wheelchairs are available on a first- come, first-served basis from 9 am to 3 pm. Borrowed wheelchairs must be returned immediately following the conclusion of the All-University Commencement. Arrangements for accessible guest seating and other services may be made through the Office of Disability Services. Please refer to the Commencement website for more information and instructions on how to request these services beginning April 1. For immediate release: Tuesday, January 29, 2020 Four To Be Inducted Into Women’s Beanpot Hall of Fame Joe Bertagna, Casey Pickett, Reagan Rust and Kelli Stack Are Latest Honorees BOSTON, MA - Four unique contributors to the oldest college hockey tournament for women will be recognized as 2020 Women’s Beanpot Hall of Fame inductees, when the event comes to Boston University’s Walter Brown Arena next month. This year’s honorees are Joe Bertagna, Harvard Class of 1973; Casey Pickett, Northeastern Class of 2013; Reagan Rust, Boston University Class of 2019 and Kelli Stack, Boston College Class of 2011. This year’s induction ceremony will take place on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, between opening round games. Joe Bertagna, Harvard University, Class of 1973 – Joe Bertagna, a goaltender for coaches Cooney Weiland and Bill Cleary at Harvard, launched Harvard's women's ice hockey program in 1977-78, serving as head coach at his alma mater for two seasons. He was one of four coaches who created the Women’s Beanpot Tournament. Beginning with this experience, Bertagna has dedicated his professional years to advancing the interests of women's ice hockey. He even purchased the original Beanpot (see right) from an Essex, MA, antique shop in 1977 and had it mounted to create the first Women’s Beanpot Trophy. A native of Arlington, MA, Bertagna has served the game as coach, administrator and journalist, both at the amateur and professional levels. He is in his 38th year as a college hockey administrator (15 years with ECAC and 23 with Hockey East) and has served as Tournament Director of the Women’s Beanpot since its inception in 1979.
