Cresside Collette Tutor in Tapestry Weaving and Drawing School of Fashion and Textiles RMIT University [email protected] Abstract Since Mediaeval times drawing has been the foundation for and the integrated content of woven tapestry. This paper traces the evolution of a rich, colourful, tactile medium in response to the drawn image, the shift in importance of the weaver as artist within the process, and the emergence of Tapestry as a Contemporary art form in its own right. Keywords Drawing, Tapestry, Cartoon, Artist, Weaver. “Found in Translation – the transformative role of Drawing in the realisation of Tapestry.” Introduction A bold definition of tapestry is that it is a woven work of art. It carries an image, made possible by virtue of what is known as discontinuous weft, i.e. the weft is built up in small shapes rather than running in continuous rows across the warp. The structure of the material comprises warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads. Hand woven on a loom, the weft yarn generally covers the warp, resulting in a weft - faced fabric. The design, which is woven into the fabric, forms an integral part of the textile as the artist/weaver constructs the image and surface simultaneously. Of all the textile arts, tapestry is the medium that finds its form and expression most directly in the drawn line. Drawing is the thread, both literally and metaphorically, that enables the existence of woven tapestry and it has played both a supporting and a didactic role in the realisation of this image - based form.

    Dear friends, I am pleased to announce that Father Michael Brunner, O.S.B. has been appointed the Prior-Administrator (interim superior) of Portsmouth Abbey in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. As you may recall, I was appointed to serve in this role last year, several months before my abbatial election at Saint Louis Abbey, and I have been doing so while continuing with my responsibilities here. Abbot Christo- pher Jamison, O.S.B., the Abbot President of our English Benedictine Congregation, appointed Father Michael to his new role with my blessing. I am confident that Father Michael will serve God, Portsmouth Abbey and Saint Louis Abbey well in this role. Father Michael has been serving both on the Council of Portsmouth Abbey and on the Board of Regents of Portsmouth Abbey School, and he is very familiar with the Portsmouth Abbey community. As you may recall, the monks of Portsmouth Abbey, who have been decreasing in number and increas- ing in age, have asked for the monks of Saint Louis Abbey to help reinvigorate their monastery by send- ing a small group of our monks to live there. In response to their request, the monks of Saint Louis Ab- bey agreed to enter into a collaboration with Portsmouth Abbey in which Saint Louis Abbey would send monks to Portsmouth for various periods of time to support them in their monastic life. At present, two monks of Saint Louis Abbey — Father Francis Hein, O.S.B. and Father Edward Mazuski, O.S.B. — re- side at Portsmouth Abbey. Father Michael will take up residence at Portsmouth Abbey in the months to come, once he is able to transition to others his responsibilities as Pastor of Saint Anselm Parish and as a teacher at Saint Louis Priory School.

Psalter, mid 11th c. f.30 is well-known; the rest is the usual Boethius improbabilities of the period. Egerton 1139. Queen Melissander’s Psalter, Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, c.1140. The only instrument is a good harp, available asa postcard. The ivory cover is well known: King David playing what might be a dulcimer. Harley 2804. German Bible, 1148. f.3 has a not very good David and musicians. Harley 4425. La Roman de la Rose, pre-1500. 2 folios with music parties. Royal 2.A.xvi. Psalter time of Henry VIII, with annotations by him. Harp, pipe& tabor, short trumpet, dulcimer. Interesting that Henry is one of the musicians (and his fool shuts his ears to avoid his playing).
