36 Salisbury Road Barrington, RI 02806 [email protected]

I have lived in Barrington for 13 years with my husband, Anthony, my daughter Ali (18) who will be a freshman at Syracuse in September, and my sons Ben (14) and Nick (11). We have a three year old black lab named Cinder.

I have worked as the Director of Financial Administration at Research, Engineering & Manufacturing Inc. in Middletown, RI since late 1997. Prior to that, I worked for Salomon Brothers in NYC for 10 years in Financial & Management Reporting.

In my spare time, which I have little of, I like to play golf with my husband, ski with my children, go boating with my family and knit with my friends. We spend lots of time at our family’s vacation house in Quechee, VT and visit Hanover on a regular basis for lunch at Molly’s or a book from the good old Dartmouth Bookstore.

I lived in Bissell my freshman year and loved playing bridge with Wendy Reed, Mike Ramsey and Hank Gibson to get my mind off math formulas flying through my head late at night. I had a great freshman roommate Suzanne Hall King whom I hope to catch up with at reunion. Fortunately I was able to live in Delta Delta Delta for my last two years with the incredibly awesome Lucie Haswell Voves and all the other fun Tri-Delts. I loved my Dartmouth experience and all the people I met and friends I made while there. I look forward to catching up with all of you at our 25th reunion!

We started dating freshman year. It was your typical storybook romance – girl plays field hockey, boy plays football, boy and girl play pong together in the Beta basement.

We headed to the Big Apple together after graduation, where business school and careers on Wall Street awaited. Kelly sold corporate bonds and Craig traded mortgage-backed securities. We moved out to the burbs (Weston, CT) in 1999, after the birth of our two children. Trammell (yes, named after the greatest shortstop in MLB history) is 14 and loves music and gaming. Charlotte (Charley) is 12 and enjoys sports and socializing with her friends.

Kelly recently traded the long commute to NYC to work for a small brokerage firm near home. Craig is channeling his inner Michael Keaton as Mr. Mom. Our family loves to travel and has been fortunate to have taken many fantastic trips abroad together (we are in the Galapagos in the picture below).

April Stempien-Otero, M.D. 2521 Westmont Way West Seattle WA 98199 [email protected] Spouse: Henry Otero, M.D. Kids: Carlos (11) and Rafael (8) Job Description: heartfailuretransplantcardiologist/scientist/motheroftwo Actual Job Title: Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology Craig and Julie Tall Endowed Professor in Heart Failure Research

What I do: My job is a split personality. 30-50% of my time is spent caring for patients with end-stage heart failure or status post cardiac transplant in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. 50-70% of my time is spent as a translational scientist performing and directing studies on cardiac repair. My laboratory studies both mouse models of human disease and tissue from human hearts to understand how excess scar tissue develops in response to injury. In addition, under my own FDA-Investigational New Drug application (IND) I am performing a Phase 1 clinical trial injecting bone marrow cells into the hearts of patients with end-stage heart disease. We are testing whether this strategy will improve repair in patients who are undergoing surgical placement of left ventricular assist devices (ie that machine that is keeping Dick Cheney alive) as a bridge to cardiac transplantation. Because of every sixth night and weekend call and numerous grant deadlines (for your tax dollars!) the above job percentages frequently add up to 120%.

Hobbies: Cooking (see picture of double pig roast), farming oysters at our cabin in the San Juan Islands, running, hiking, camping.

Biggest Surprise of last 25 years: Getting side job as a “spokesmodel” to raise awareness on woman and heart disease (see picture of billboard-I am at center).

Effect of Dartmouth on my life: Although I enjoy science, I was an English Literature major. This turned out to be critical in several ways. First, it made me unafraid of grant and paper writing early in my scientific career. Second, it introduced me to characters that I would meet in real life as a physician. My focus was in modernism, Joyce and Faulkner. Who would have imagined I would end up doing residency in Charlottesville, Virginia taking care of folks that walked straight out of “Go Down Moses.” Studying his books gave me much more compassion for the trials and tribulations of these patients. The combination of studying this literature and learning to relate to people completely unlike myself has made me the human being I am today.

My goal for the future is the same that I advise my children and the students who come to work in my lab: to continue to follow my passions and not second guess yourself, EVER!!!

Each year brought new experiences, friendships and intellectual development, none of which I’d trade for the world. My only regret was not taking a semester abroad in Spain – so I’m trying to catch up on seeing the world now! I really enjoy taking my kids to travel to other countries. This summer will include a trip to London, as my daughter is into All Things British; and New Zea- land is on the radar for 2012 to celebrate Jeff’s 50th birthday. I’m very excited to have my kids accompany me back to Hanover in June. Taylor is very interested in attending Dartmouth since both her parents are alumni (dad Bill Daly is also an ’86). I think it would be really cool for either or both the kids to attend Dartmouth and start our own little legacy. Things are really good right now – I’m really digging this mellow mid-life period with its rela- tively minor ups and downs. I’ve been living in the DC area for the past four and a half years, and I think it’s such a great place to be – I got my MBA from Georgetown in the late 80s and always wanted to return because it always felt like the right place for me. Indeed, I will often ! nd myself driving along the GW Parkway at night, looking over at the lighted monuments, Kennedy Center and Capitol building across the river and a smile will just spread across my face because I am really happy here.

I have great memories of four years in Wheeler – our annual water # ght, freezing cold nights watering down our ice sculpture for Winter Carnival, antics with Rich- ardson, many great friends, and countless hours of late night debates. I have almost forgiven those who defaced the picture of Ronald Regan that hung outside my door, and which I literally had to change weekly. Twenty-# ve years later, I # nd myself a bit more balanced in my politics and hopefully a lot broader in my thinking. I have learned the most from my family. My wife, Gerri, with whom I just celebrated the ',th anniversary of our # rst date, raised two wonderful boys and in the past few years switched from the practice of law and business to becoming a nurse practitioner. My eldest son, Sam, who graduated from Andover two years ago, is a musician in Northern . My youngest son, Alec, who just graduated from Andover, is o+ to Rice in the Fall. Gerri has taught me that you are never too old to reinvent yourself, Sam has taught me the hard work and joy of following one’s dreams, and Alec has taught me the power of determination and doing things simply for the joy of doing them. All three have taught me about getting out of one’s comfort zone, and truly challenging oneself. I also have learned a great deal from my partners, clients, students, and players. With # ve of my closest friends with whom I have worked for over ), years, I run a mid-size, global consulting # rm that helps the F.,,/G$,,, improve the way they negotiate and manage relationships with their most strategic customers, suppliers, and alliance partners. Beyond our work at Vantage Partners, many years back, we also founded Con/ ict Management Group (now part of Mercy Corps), a not-for-pro# t # rm that works on governmental negotiations and con/ icts in hot spots throughout the world. I also have the privilege of being in my eighth year of teaching at Tuck, and the true honor of doing the same at West Point. Over the past fews years, we have founded the West Point Negotiation Project devoted to improving the way small unit combat leaders negotiate in theater. On top of this, I still coach high school baseball players. I feel very blessed to have the ability to interact with executives in the “morning”, graduate and college students in the “a" ernoon”, and high school players in the “evening”. ( e work is exciting, and hugely rewarding. When I work with any of these folks, but especially when I am working with a cadet or current o! cer, I feel the impact of so many of my teachers at Dartmouth. While I could point to most of the Government Department, I could also point to much of the English and other departments, not to mention very speci# cally to John Hennessey (who inspired me and put me on the path described above), Vincent Starzinger (who taught me how to think), and Rob Oden (who, although I only had him for a term, demonstrated for me the passion that a truly gi" ed teacher brings to his work and his students). I look forward to the next ). years… ones that I hope are # lled with good laughs, inspiring challenges, and sweet music for us all.
