NYCEDC 2018 7 / 15 Seeking Partners for Affordable Artist Workspace Initiative NYCEDC launches new efforts to build affordable artist work- space in New York City—crucial to the City’s commitment to create 10,000 jobs across the creative and cultural sectors. 8 /02 Grants to Boost Fashion Manufacturers NYCEDC and Council of Fashion Designers of America announce that seven NYC fashion manufacturers will receive more than $480K in grants to purchase advanced equipment through the Fashion Manufacturing Initiative Grant Fund. The public-private program supports the local fashion manu- facturing sector and its workforce. 10 NYCEDC 2018 /27 New Vendors for the New Essex Street Market When it opens in 2019, Essex Market will welcome Samesa, a contemporary Middle Eastern takeaway counter; Josephine’s Feast!, an NYC-based maker of jams and preserves; and Saffron, a florist established in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. NYCEDC 2018 11 /28 Bringing Apprenticeships to New Yorkers NYCEDC and SBS launch ApprenticeNYC, a $5 million investment to create 450 apprenticeships in the industrial, health, and tech industries over the next three years. 12 /20 An NYC / French Connection for Business Growth NYCEDC announces a partnership between the City and France to fuel international expansions and investment in the tech and innovation sectors. Over the last 15 years, French companies have invested $7.2 billion and created over 21,000 jobs in the city. 14 NYCEDC 2018 /08 Reactivating South Brooklyn Marine Terminal NYCEDC announces new operators for the shipping hub and its re-designation as the Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal—part of the City’s plan to bring new indus- trial uses to the South Brooklyn waterfront and connect local talent to quality maritime jobs. NYCEDC 2018 17 / 14 Planting a Flag in NYC’s Blockchain Industry NYCEDC announces two initiatives—a Blockchain Resource Center and a public blockchain competition—to position New York City as an accessible center for innovation in the fast-growing industry. From May 11 to 16, NYCEDC partners with Coindesk to host the inaugural Blockchain Week NYC, featuring a series of events, including an industry hackathon and a first-ever Blockchain Job Fair. 18 / 16 women.nyc NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray and Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen announce women.nyc, NYCEDC’s online portal to empower and inspire women in New York City. The program is designed to overcome barriers faced by women seeking to grow their businesses. The park is part of the City’s $99 million investment in the area, also to include affordable housing. 21 / 02 NYC E-Prix at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal NYCEDC and Formula E announce that 1,000 complimen- tary passes will be available for community members to attend the Qatar Airways New York City E-Prix held at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on July 14 and 15. NYCEDC 2018 23 / 11 Increased Affordability in Downtown Far Rockaway The Community Builders will create 224 affordable apart- ments on a City-owned lot and transform a long-neglected shopping center into over 450 affordable apartments. Just 10 months since the City Council approved the neigh- borhood’s rezoning, these projects show major progress in Downtown Far Rockaway. MARCH 15 NYC Ferry Vessel Naming Competition Winners Announced “Spring Mallard” and “Rainbow Cruise” are among 10 winners of the 2018 public school competition to name NYC Ferry boats, engaging some of the youngest New Yorkers on the city’s newest mass transportation system. MARCH 20 Ferry Hiring Ramps Up NYC Ferry announces that it will make 75+ hires over the summer to prepare for two new route launches in August. Total hires are expected to more than double original staffing projections. MAY 03 9 Million Annual Riders Projected for 2023 The City prepares to invest $300 million in capital over the next five years to meet increased demand.
