Cellular sheaf cohomology in Polymake Lars Kastner, Kristin Shaw, Anna-Lena Winz July 9, 2018 Abstract This chapter provides a guide to our polymake extension cellularSheaves. We first define cellular sheaves on polyhedral complexes in Euclidean space, as well as cosheaves, and their (co)homologies. As motivation, we summarise some results from toric and tropical geometry linking cellular sheaf cohomologies to cohomologies of algebraic varieties. We then give an overview of the structure of the extension cellularSheaves for polymake. Finally, we illustrate the usage of the extension with examples from toric and tropical geometry. 1 Introduction n Given a polyhedral complex Π in R , a cellular sheaf (of vector spaces) on Π associates to every face of Π a vector space and to every face relation a map of the associated vector spaces (see Definition 2). Just as with usual sheaves, we can compute the cohomology of cellular sheaves (see Definition 5). The advantage is that cellular sheaf cohomology is the cohomology of a chain complex consisting of finite dimensional vector spaces (see Definition 3). Polyhedral complexes often arise in algebraic geometry. Moreover, in some cases, invariants of algebraic varieties can be recovered as cohomology of certain cellular sheaves on polyhedral complexes. Our two major classes of examples come from toric and tropical geometry and are presented in Section 2.2. We refer the reader to [9] for a guide to toric geometry and polytopes. For an introduction to tropical geometry see [4], [20]. The main motivation for this polymake extension was to implement tropical homology, as introduced by Itenberg, Katzarkov, Mikhalkin, and Zharkov in [15]. -
Sheaves and Homotopy Theory
SHEAVES AND HOMOTOPY THEORY DANIEL DUGGER The purpose of this note is to describe the homotopy-theoretic version of sheaf theory developed in the work of Thomason [14] and Jardine [7, 8, 9]; a few enhancements are provided here and there, but the bulk of the material should be credited to them. Their work is the foundation from which Morel and Voevodsky build their homotopy theory for schemes [12], and it is our hope that this exposition will be useful to those striving to understand that material. Our motivating examples will center on these applications to algebraic geometry. Some history: The machinery in question was invented by Thomason as the main tool in his proof of the Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture for Bott-periodic algebraic K-theory. He termed his constructions `hypercohomology spectra', and a detailed examination of their basic properties can be found in the first section of [14]. Jardine later showed how these ideas can be elegantly rephrased in terms of model categories (cf. [8], [9]). In this setting the hypercohomology construction is just a certain fibrant replacement functor. His papers convincingly demonstrate how many questions concerning algebraic K-theory or ´etale homotopy theory can be most naturally understood using the model category language. In this paper we set ourselves the specific task of developing some kind of homotopy theory for schemes. The hope is to demonstrate how Thomason's and Jardine's machinery can be built, step-by-step, so that it is precisely what is needed to solve the problems we encounter. The papers mentioned above all assume a familiarity with Grothendieck topologies and sheaf theory, and proceed to develop the homotopy-theoretic situation as a generalization of the classical case. -

The organizing framework for this class will be a 2-dimensional topological field theory called the B-model. Topics will include 1. Vector bundles and coherent sheaves 2. Projective will mean that we look at closed subsets (with respect to the Zariski topology). The reason is that if p : X ! pt is the unique map from such a subset X to a point, then we can (derived) push forward a bounded complex of coherent sheaves M on X to a bounded complex of coherent sheaves on a point Rp∗(M). Smooth will mean the following. If x 2 X is a point, then locally x is cut out by 2 a maximal ideal mx of functions vanishing on x. Smooth means that dim mx=mx = dim X. (In general it may be bigger.) Intuitively it means that locally at x the variety X looks like a manifold, and one way to make this precise is that the completion of the local ring at x is isomorphic to a power series ring C[[x1; :::xn]]; this is the ring where Taylor series expansions live. -

SERRE DUALITY AND APPLICATIONS JUN HOU FUNG Abstract. We carefully develop the theory of Serre duality and dualizing sheaves. We differ from the approach in [12] in that the use of spectral se- quences and the Yoneda pairing are emphasized to put the proofs in a more systematic framework. As applications of the theory, we discuss the Riemann- Roch theorem for curves and Bott's theorem in representation theory (follow- ing [8]) using the algebraic-geometric machinery presented. Prerequisites Studying algebraic geometry from the modern perspective now requires a some- what substantial background in commutative and homological algebra, and it would be impractical to go through the many definitions and theorems in a short paper. In any case, I can do no better than the usual treatments of the various subjects, for which references are provided in the bibliography. To a first approximation, this paper can be read in conjunction with chapter III of Hartshorne [12]. Also in the bibliography are a couple of texts on algebraic groups and Lie theory which may be beneficial to understanding the latter parts of this paper. -

Cohomology groups Ha(X, E) are defined, where X is a topological space and £ is a sheaf on X with values in Kan's category of spectra. These groups generalize the ordinary cohomology groups of X with coefficients in an abelian sheaf, as well as the generalized cohomology of X in the usual sense. The groups are defined by means of the "homotopical algebra" of Quillen applied to suitable categories of sheaves. The study of the homotopy category of sheaves of spectra requires an abstract homotopy theory more general than Quillen's, and this is developed in Part I of the paper. Finally, the basic cohomological properties are proved, including a spectral sequence which generalizes the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence (in gen- eralized cohomology theory) and the "local to global" spectral sequence (in sheaf cohomology theory). Introduction. In this paper we will study the homotopy theory of sheaves of simplicial sets and sheaves of spectra. This homotopy theory will be used to give a derived functor definition of generalized sheaf cohomology groups H^iX, E), where X is a topological space and E is a sheaf of spectra on X, subject to certain finiteness conditions. These groups include as special cases the usual generalized cohomology of X defined by a spectrum [22] and the cohomology of X with coefficients in a complex of abelian sheaves. On a Vanishing Result in Sheaf Cohomology
ON A VANISHING RESULT IN SHEAF COHOMOLOGY RANKEYA DATTA 1. Introduction A key part of the proof of Grothendieck’s vanishing theorem of sheaf cohomology on a Noetherian topological space (see [Sta15, Tag 02UZ] for Grothendieck’s theorem) can be summarized in the following result. We state it word for word from [Sta15], although a more general version may be found in [Gro57, Proposition 3.6.1]. Theorem 1.1. [Sta15, Tag 02UX] Let X be a topological space. Let d ≥ 0 be an integer. Assume (1) X is quasi-compact, (2) the quasi-compact opens form a basis for X, and (3) the intersection of two quasi-compact opens is quasi-compact. p (4) H (X; j!ZU ) = 0 for all p > d and any quasi-compact open j : U ! X. Then Hp(X; F) = 0 for all p > d and any abelian sheaf F on X. The goal of this note is to give an example for which Theorem 1.1 fails if we only relax the hypothesis that X is quasi-compact (Propositions 2.3 and 3.1). This example emerged from the author’s investigation on local cohomology of valuation rings [Dat16]. In particular, some results from [Dat16, Sections 6, 7] are reproduced below without citation. Any other outside result we use is accompanied by a proper reference. 2. Preliminaries The space in our example is going to be the complement of the closed point of the spectrum of a valuation ring (a.k.a. punctured spectrum). The spectrum of such a ring has peculiar topological properties, all of which ultimately stem from the fact that the set of ideals of a valuation ring is totally ordered by inclusion. -

Sheaf Cohomology Gabriel Chˆenevert Payman Kassaei September 24, 2003 In this lecture, we define the cohomology groups of a topological space X with coefficients in a sheaf of abelian groups F on X in terms of the derived functors of the global section functor Γ(X; ¢ ). Then we introduce Cechˇ coho- mology with respect to an open covering of X, which permits to make explicit calculations, and discuss under which conditions it can be used to compute sheaf cohomology. 1 Derived functors We first need to review some homological algebra in order to be able to define sheaf cohomology using the derived functors of the global sections functor. Let A be an abelian category, that is, roughly, an additive category in which there exist well-behaved kernels and cokernels for each morphism, so that, for example, the notion of an exact sequence in A makes sense.
