Maya Angelou once said: “There is nothing quite so tragic as a young cynic, because it means the person has gone from knowing nothing to believing nothing.” It is an extraordinary time in our country. And if there is one thing I’m absolutely certain of, it is that we must continue to believe in the possibilities for our nation, and even more importantly, our children. At Playworks, we believe play is an antidote to cynicism and it is possible to ensure that every child in this country has access to safe and healthy play every day. Knowing the transformative difference we’re making in the lives of kids, we are compelled to grow. And I’m proud to say in fiscal year 2017, we did just that. We still aim to ensure safe and healthy play for 3.5 million kids at 7.000 schools by December 2020. So we know, we need to open our playbook to schools we have not supported in person. In October, we launched Recess Lab, a free online destination created to help principals, teachers, parents, and kids re-discover the power of play. We offered tools like our Recess Checkup – a three-minute online quiz designed to help principals and teachers identify strengths, uncover areas for improvement, and understand what’s really happening for kids in their school And we have seen amazing engagement. Over 70,000 teachers and principals have visited RecessLab.org with over 3,000 schools having taking the Recess Checkup. This is huge because giving away our strategies and insights is a big step towards making sure every kid in America gets safe and healthy play every day. To expand safe and healthy play to many more elementary schools, we also collaborated with partners who are invested in complementary efforts. For example, we engaged schools in the Active Schools network to take the Recess Checkup. Recognizing that the benefits of play carry well beyond recess, we also teamed up with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to increase awareness of and resources for social and emotional development among kids during in-school and out-of-school time. We’re excited to see what the new year will bring and want to thank you so much for being a part of Playworks. Every year we get closer to our goal, and with your continued support we continue to believe we can make it possible for every kid in America to get to play every day. Thanks, Jill Vialet Founder and CEO 3 ANNUAL REPORT 2017 So many community members are making a difference with Playworks. Across our communities, 3,309 people volunteered 14,511 hours to make a difference on the playground. They painted playgrounds, encouraging kids to get in the game on playgrounds nationwide alongside Junior Coaches, and became a valuable part of the team supporting our after-school sports leagues and special events. “I have one student who always sat out of recess. Since starting Playworks, he has been more ready to participate and knows that he will always get a turn.” Kathleen Benevento, Teacher Rafael Hernandez School, New York/New Jersey 4 ANNUAL REPORT 2017 PLAY WORKS This year, we introduced the Rock Paper Givers Society (RPGS), Playworks’ premier giving society for a group of major donors committed to building safe and healthy play for kids. This society connects members more actively to the Playworks team, provides customized R OCK experiences to engage with Playworks, and stay connected to our mission. We were excited to welcome our first 365 members to the society this year. These donors PAPER demonstrated an exceptional and generous commitment to our mission of bringing safe, healthy play to every child.
