The Hollywood Cinema Industry's Coming of Digital Age: The
The Hollywood Cinema Industry’s Coming of Digital Age: the Digitisation of Visual Effects, 1977-1999 Volume I Rama Venkatasawmy BA (Hons) Murdoch This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. -------------------------------- Rama Venkatasawmy Abstract By 1902, Georges Méliès’s Le Voyage Dans La Lune had already articulated a pivotal function for visual effects or VFX in the cinema. It enabled the visual realisation of concepts and ideas that would otherwise have been, in practical and logistical terms, too risky, expensive or plain impossible to capture, re-present and reproduce on film according to so-called “conventional” motion-picture recording techniques and devices. Since then, VFX – in conjunction with their respective techno-visual means of re-production – have gradually become utterly indispensable to the array of practices, techniques and tools commonly used in filmmaking as such. For the Hollywood cinema industry, comprehensive VFX applications have not only motivated the expansion of commercial filmmaking praxis. They have also influenced the evolution of viewing pleasures and spectatorship experiences. Following the digitisation of their associated technologies, VFX have been responsible for multiplying the strategies of re-presentation and story-telling as well as extending the range of stories that can potentially be told on screen. By the same token, the visual standards of the Hollywood film’s production and exhibition have been growing in sophistication. -

The Art of Anticipation: The Artistic Status of the Film Trailer and its Place in a Wider Cinematic Culture Daniel Hesford PhD Film Studies The University of Edinburgh 2013 The Art of Anticipation: The Artistic Status of the Hollywood Film Trailer and its Place Within a Wider Cinematic Culture Abstract: Close association with, and proximity to, a culture of commercialism means film trailers are often overlooked in academic analyses of cinema. Trailers are, for many audiences, simply adverts: disposable, consumable and not 'worthy' of the critical attention paid to the their feature-length antecedents. Yet trailers' undeniable impact on spectators generates a spectrum of reactions which contradicts the often dismissive and negative reception with which they are met. Trailers receive intense popular and critical scrutiny and are constantly compared to the films they represent. -

Houdini's High End 3D Magic
HETHER OR NOT THEATRE AUDIENCES VOTE A FILM TO THE CLASSIC MOVIE LIST, THE CONSUMPTION OF FEATURE FILM SPECIAL EFFECTS W creation has become a visual feast. Viewers may not even be aware of the computer graphics they’re watching. Some of the “little” people falling a very great distance from the top of the sinking TITANIC were actually animated drawings. Even the rain and debris background in the latest GODZILLA was digitally animated (ya had to notice the digitally generated monsters). Maybe the “sto- ry” in a film makes it a classic, but the “look” of its cinematic sequences can also provide inspiration for game developers. The high end film arena is now, in fact, a developing ground for the latest tools in computer games. Side Effects Software’s next-generation 3D animation package Houdini was born out of work done by principals Kim Davidson and Greg Hermanovic, who co-founded the company in 1987. Davidson and Hermanovic worked together prior to that at Omnibus in Toronto, where they developed pro- gramming to solve animation challenges Side Effects Software, a leading player in special effects technology based in Toronto, is the creator of Houdini, a 3D animation package. Houdini is used by Hollywood production houses like Centropolis (GODZILLA),VisionArt (DR. DOOLITTLE) and Digital Domain (TITANIC). On the game front, Houdini is used by Square USA of Los Angeles in its recent Playstation game PARASITE EVE (right), Japanese gaming giants Sega and Namco (ALPINE SURFER, below, and RIDGE RACER, left), and VectorBoy Studios, early Windows NT developers, in KAHUNA (bottom). -
