PRODUCTION NOTES CASTING This play allows for very little flexibility in casting. Doubling is impossible since all the characters are onstage at the same time near the end of the play. None of the roles are gender neutral. Due to the dramaʼs setting in an abbey, the cast is predominantly female, with only three male characters out of ten total. The play can, however, be performed by a cast of children, teenagers, or adults. The story is fun, short, and simple enough to be acted by a very young cast. Yet the playʼs humor appeals to all ages and its message speaks to young and old alike, so it can be performed with equal success by a cast of teens or adults. COSTUMING The charactersʼ costumes are fairly straightforward. The sisters wear nunsʼ habits, with Mary Elizabeth and Mary Catherine in habits designed specifically for novices. The habits can be as simple or as elaborate as desired: they can merely consist of black robes and veils, or they can include scapular, cowl, belt, rosary, and even wimple. Ideally, the novicesʼ costumes should be distinguishable from the other sistersʼ, perhaps in color or in length. For instance, the novicesʼ habits may be dark blue instead of black, or their veils may be white or gray. Homes, Arson, and Distraught are dressed professionally in 1890s style. Homesʼs attire should call to mind the stereotypical Sherlock Holmes look: ulster coat, deerstalker hat, etc. The details of Arsonʼs and Distraughtʼs costumes are more flexible. One or both can be dressed for the cold weather in overcoat, scarf, hat, etc. Alternatively, they may appear simply in suits, presumably having removed their winter gear elsewhere. The most important element of Arsonʼs outfit is the inside of his suit jacket, which (as he reveals in Scene Two) is lined with his collection of matchboxes and matchbooks. ONSTAGE PROPS The set is simple and solemn since the entire play takes place in a single room in a convent. The only required onstage prop is a chair, but stained glass windows and a cross on the wall help create the impression of being inside an abbey. T The 11-year-olds were sitting together aboard the riverboat Becky Thatcher along with the nineteen other students in Mr. Espinoza’s sixth grade class. The group had just embarked from Deep River Landing to study the Connecticut River. But Li-Ming and Thomas, best friends since kindergarten, had their eyes on the land to the right—or starboard—side of the boat and were scanning the yellow, scarlet, and russet foliage for the silhouette of a rough stone castle. Perched on a stool, facing them, was their guide, a white-haired man named Norm who was speaking into a microphone. He knew the landmarks so well that he could point to them without looking. Li-Ming and Thomas were supposed to be taking notes, and they were aware of Mr. Espinoza standing behind them, keeping his sharp eyes on the class. But what Mr. Espinoza couldn’t see was what Li-Ming and Thomas had written—or rather drawn—in their notebooks. Thomas glanced over at Li-Ming’s sketch of a castle, complete with detailed blueprints of rooms, and then back at his own drawing of a deerstalker hat and pipe. “In a minute, if you look two hundred feet up on the ridge to the right, you’ll spot Gillette Castle,” Norm finally said. Thomas and Li-Ming strained forward, waiting. “Who can tell me who William Gillette was?” Norm continued.

With proper care, your new gun should bring you a lifetime of shooting pleasure. Before firing your gun, there are a few precautions that should be followed. Please read these instructions carefully. 1. If your new rifle is a flintlock, we have function tested the lock assembly, flint and frizzen to ensure that it provides proper ignition. Therefore, please do not be concerned with the resulting marks on the frizzen–it is simply a reminder of our comprehensive factory inspection. 2. The barrel's bore contains a heavy duty preservative that may resemble rusty oil. It is not rust! This preservative must be thoroughly removed before firing to obtain maximum accuracy. Directions: A. Swab the bore with some form of solvent or penetrating oil (example: WD-40 or Hoppe's #9). Let soak overnight. B. Brush out the following day using a nylon brush wrapped with 00 steel wool or a brass brush (must be under bore diameter to prevent bristles from jamming at the breech of the barrel). C. Wipe out using soft flannel (avoid t-shirt material–it doesn't work well using cleaning jag and has a tendency to stay down the bore). The brass coloration you see is normal after cleaning. 3. The stock has been stained with oil leaving a dull finish. As with all oil finished stocks, rubbing in additional thin coats of oil (Linseed or Birchwood Casey's Tru-Oil) will further enhance the finish and protect the stock.

Their hats tend to be particularly eccentric. ‘Funny, isn’t it,’ Mr Bolder observed to his friend Fred Willis, the hatter, ‘that people who paint pictures think it’s proper that they should act barmy? Hats like horses wear in summer.’1 A floppy felt or straw, when Victorian manhood was ramrod-stiff in top hats or bowlers, was unconventional, but hardly threatening. The upper-middle- class Forsytes, however, in John Galsworthy’s Forsyte Saga, worry about June Forsyte’s fiancé, architect Philip Bosinney.
