GHRA judge, Helen M. Hogan of Fort Worth, brings out her fourth novel this spring. RIDGECREST RESCUE, a feature of the Publish America spring lineup, brings murder and romance to the Colorado Rockies at a series of Arabian horse shows. Helen taught writing and literature for Tarrant County College for thirty years before retiring. She wrote several novels in her spare time while showing her horses in hunter, jumper, dressage, and many disciplines of the Arabian division. In retirement, she worked to find a publisher. Hogan’s mystery forces Rod Mannering, a decent guy, to outwit a murderer and a scam artist. Finding his friend’s body at a horse show pits Rod against a killer. A developer’s lawsuit threatens financial ruin. With physical and monetary problems, Rod won’t romance the attractive Texas rider, Taylor Blair, but together, despite vicious threats, they unearth the real estate scam. The Highway Patrol finds Rod’s daughter’s car abandoned like vehicles of women killed recently, and he forgets all else. With Taylor, he heads into a storm to find Belinda; A trip wire catapults him over the cliff. Battered, hanging onto a narrow ledge, he insists Taylor climb the ridge crest to rescue Belinda. Fears and hopes attack his mind throughout his painful wait. Readers identify with a man struggling through a physical and emotional comeback and a woman regaining Helen’s new book available at Barnes control of her life in a backdrop of Arabian horse shows. and Noble and online at www.amazon.com and Look for these other books by Helen: www.publishamerica.com WARNING SHOT, A NOVEL OF SOUTH TEXAS , DRIVEN TO WIN, and UNICORNS DON’T WEAR SHOES

GHRA Second Annual Gypsy Horse World Show Additional Awards and Trophies

AGHBA donated a trophy for the Overall Gypsy Performance Champion, the trophy was awarded according to the AGHBA guidelines for the top scoring horse/rider combination. The winner was Pete Lichau and A Wizards Spell Winstons Brighton the gorgeous horse head trophy was presented by the AGHBA representative Lynn Strauman.

Carol Smettem-Minson and David Brooks of Appleby England donated two Perpetual Trophies. The Zed Memorial Trophy and the Chywoon Stud Trophy.

The Zed Memorial Trophy was presented to the winner (Dam) of the Produce of Dam class. Zed was an American horse that was brought from Texas to Appleby England. The transfer of this horse forged a friendship that was eventually responsible for the formation of the Gypsy Cob Society in England and then the Gypsy Horse Registry of America, Inc. The winner of this trophy was A Wizards Spell Miss Felicity, owned by Linda Brown.

The Chywoon Stud Trophy was presented to the first place in Mares Born in the USA. In Chywoon’s opinion these mares are the future of the breed and the quality of America’s home bred stock, and this winner is proof that a breeder has understood the sense and purpose of this unique breed. The Chywoon Stud trophy was presented to A CR Diamond Girl and Megan Parks.

Lynn Strauman donated the Lynn Strauman Long Distance Perpetual Trophy to be awarded to the competitor at the GHRA Gypsy Horse World Show that has hauled horses the longest distance to the show. Mandy Mondiel won this trophy having travelled 1,757.34 miles one way to the show. The perpetual trophies will be kept in the GHRA office. Each year the winner’s name will be etched on the trophy and an individual trophy will be presented to the winners.

SD Farms the Steve Down family and Meadow Farm UK Andrea Betteridge came to the show from the UK and brought fine china tea cups with Gypsy Cobs purchased from Appleby and they were awarded to Grand Champion Mare, Stallion and Gelding.

Horse Business or a Hobby? How not to make a $250,000 a year mistake - James Oates, Oates Financial & Tax Service

The often asked question about owning horses is whether your investment might be considered a “business”, or whether it is a hobby. There are certain requirements you must meet in order to qualify to use Section 179 of the IRS tax code to potentially deduct up to $250,000 per year. On Feb. 13, 2008, President Bush signed into law the Economic Stimulus Act increasing the expensing allowance for horses purchased and placed into service beginning after December 31, 2007. Previous allowance was $128,000 per year and is now increased to $250,000. Typically if your property or horses have a useful life of more than one year, they costs must be spread over several years as depreciation. The new provisions allow horse businesses to fully expense your horse or property in the year it was purchased. Allowances can include your horses, trucks, trailers, farm equipment. Your Section 179 deduction cannot create a taxable loss for your business, but your active business can also come from wages at another job and any other income you may have. Taxpayers must file Form 4562 with original tax return for the year the horses or equipment were put into service. For further assistance and questions as to whether your horse activity qualifies, please contact us at [email protected] or 817-447-0946.

Membership in the GHRyA is your gateway to fun and friendship, building memories to last a lifetime! The Gypsy Horse Registry Youth Association is one of the first youth organizations of its kind. The newly formed youth group will be offering a wide range of activities for all youth, no matter what age, riding disci- pline or ability. As a member of the GHRyA, you’ll learn more about the Gypsy Horse breed, develop leadership skills, promote good sportsmanship and become more active in your community. If you have a current youth membership in the Gypsy Horse Registry of America, you are already a member of the GHRyA. Many activities are currently being set up. A few of the contests being planned include a logo design contest, art contest, an essay contest, and a photo contest. A youth’s “Gypsy Horse of the Quarter” will be selected, and a youth GHRyA Prince and Princess will be crowned at the world show in 2011. Currently youth classes are being added to the Gypsy Horse World show for 2011. 4C’s Gypsy Horses is in the process of setting up a “Babe Scholarship” for deserving youth in honor of one of our Gypsy Horses named Babe that was so special to us.
