Harvest Festival is a time for celebrations and to offer thanks for blessings received. This year we have good reason as we celebrate the return of our very old friend Rev. John McNaughton to conduct the service .We also extend a particular welcome to Rt .Rev. Bishop Alison White, , who will preach the sermon. This is the first visit of Bishop Alison to our church and the first Bishop to attend for more than thirty years. South Dalton Ladies Club.

The evening was cancelled as several members were on holiday, which meant we were unable to make up the required number for a viable pottery painting session. We hope to arrange another evening at the workshop in the near future.

On Thursday October 3rd, Kevin Norris returns to tell us about his Three Glaciers Expedition in the Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan. Kevin will describe his journey from Islamabad along the Karako- ram Highway into the remote mountains bordering Afghanistan and China to the village of Skardu. The expedition treks three glaciers and over a 6000 metre pass, offering a glimpse into the lives of people forging an existence in an alien environment. Everyone is invited to join us in the village hall at 7.30pm, with coffee, tea and cake afterwards.

Church Lights—Winter 2019

Due to popular demand the period of illumination will be increased for the coming winter from 27th October to 29th February 2020. Following the success of the floodlighting appeals during the past ten years the village hall committee are appealing for sponsorship and contributions towards the cost of the electricity used. We are asking people to sponsor a night for each of the dates given above on a first come first served basis with a minimum donation of £5.00 per night. You may wish to choose a date with some significance for you such as a birthday, or a special anniversary. If your chosen date has been taken we will allocate the nearest available one . If all dates have been taken the donation will be put towards the cost of the electricity consumed.

The official switching- on will take place on Sunday 27th October 2019 at 6.00pm followed by refreshments in the village hall . If you would like to donate food please contact Maureen Barnett, Jane Pearson-Moore or Giles Peacock.

Village Elder

Nonagenarian - Eric Wood

Perhaps the most recognisable man in the village, and who will talk endlessly of Tractors to Tricycles, Traction engines to Toyotas, Jeeps to Jowetts not to mention Motorbikes to Mondeos, is surprisingly modest. So much so that, with the approach of his 90th birthday in July, he made clear to his family that he “did not want any fuss”. The family promptly ig- nored him and secretly organised a birthday celebration! Mavis was one of the conspira- tors and made sure that on the appointed day he would take her to Beverley to engage in some innocent shopping. Not so . A canal boat , together with many family members and friends was waiting to take him on a cruise lasting several hours. The above picture shows Eric and Mavis enjoying the outing and proudly displaying his “Made in 1929” badge.

So a belated Happy Birthday to a delightful man, not forgetting his ever watchful “manager” Mavis, with our very best wishes.

P.S. Eric has assured me that he is about to start writing his memoirs - watch this space!
