Treason and the State: Law, Politics, and Ideology in the English Civil War D
This page intentionally left blank Treason and the State This study traces the transition of treason from a personal crime against the monarch to a modern crime against the impersonal state. It consists of four highly detailed case studies of major state treason trials in England beginning with that of Thomas Wentworth, First Earl of Strafford, in the spring of 1641 and ending with that of Charles Stuart, King of England, in January 1649. The book examines how these trials constituted practical contexts in which ideas of statehood and public authority legitimated courses of political action that might ordi- narily be considered unlawful – or at least not within the compass of the foundational statute of 25 Edward III. The ensuing narrative reveals how the events of the 1640s in England challenged existing conceptions of treason as a personal crime against the king, his family and his servants, and pushed the ascendant parliamentarian faction toward embracing an impersonal conception of the state that perceived public authority as completely independent of any individual or group. d. alan orr was educated at Queen’s University at Kingston, the University of Glasgow and the University of Cambridge, where he received his Ph.D. in 1997. Positioning the Diggers within a Communist Tradition Since their rediscovery in the nineteenth century—first by Liberal, Social- ist, and Marxist historians and then by Protestant nonconformists—the English Diggers of 1649–50 have been successively appropriated; their image refashioned in the service of new political doctrines that have sought legitimacy partly through emphasizing supposed ideological antecedents. In a previous article I demonstrated that recent attempts to incorporate the Diggers within a constructed Green heritage are unconvincing and that at worst these emerging “Green narratives” are insensitive to historical context.1 Similarly, here I want to show how, either through lack of understanding the finer points of Protestant theology or deliberate distortion, most explanations of the Diggers’ implementation of the doctrine of community of goods have been misleading. Engels, at that time a journalist and political activist with republican sympathies, linked the revolutionary struggle of the German people in 1848 with the defeated uprising of their forebears.2 Moreover, since the 1890s a number of scholars writing in the wake of the emergence of British socialism and burgeoning trade union movement have used the word to describe an ideology that burst forth during the English Revolu- tion. -

Jazz pianist and Philadelphia native Kenny Barron kicks off the Annenberg Center’s jazz series (Philadelphia, September 14, 2012)—Nine-time Grammy®-nominated hometown jazz legend Kenny Barron will kick off the 12/13 jazz series at the Annenberg Center. An inductee in the Jazz Hall of Fame, Barron’s piano skills have led him to be called “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” by the Los Angeles Times. Barron will be joined by Kiyoshi Kitagawa on bass and another Philadelphia native, Johnathan Blake, on drums. This performance will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 8 PM.
