Guilty feeling can make person feel that he or she makes foolish for other person. He or she does not forgive her or himself for the mistakes at the past. Guilty feeling often comes when he or she tries to avoid something such as to make someone happy or to make someone enjoy in bad condition. Guilty feeling happens when a person becomes emotional and he or she can not control her or his emotion. Guilty feeling can be solved if people can be positive thinking for their activity, and try to renew their activity (//http/ www.bellaonline.com/ articles/ How to Stop Feeling Guilty- Stress Management). Confidence is the drama novel written by Henry James. It was published by Pennsylvania State University in 2008. The first publishing was in 1879. The original language is English. This novel includes 245 pages and thirty chapters. Confidence retells the love of the major characters, Gordon Wright, Bernard Loungeville and Angela Vivian. This novel is divided into four 1 2 parts. First part focuses on Bernard Loungeville and Gordon Wright as the friendship with different characters. Second part focuses on Angela Vivian the mysterious girl. The Third focuses on Gordon Wright and Blance Evers. The last part focuses on conflict between the major’s characters, Bernard Loungeville, Gordon Wright, Angela Vivian, and Blance Evers. -

A SMALL BOY AND OTHERS BY HENRY JAMES NEW YORK CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS 1913 I In the attempt to place together some particulars of the early life of William James and present him in his setting, his immediate native and domestic air, so that any future gathered memorials of him might become the more intelligible and interesting, I found one of the consequences of my interrogation of the past assert itself a good deal at the expense of some of the others. For it was to memory in the first place that my main appeal for particulars had to be made; I had been too near a witness of my brother's beginnings of life, and too close a participant, by affection, admiration and sympathy, in whatever touched and moved him, not to feel myself in possession even of a greater quantity of significant truth, a larger handful of the fine substance of history, than I could hope to express or apply. To recover anything like the full treasure of scattered, wasted circumstance was at the same time to live over the spent experience itself, so deep and rich and rare, with whatever sadder and sorer[Pg 2] intensities, even with whatever poorer and thinner passages, after the manner of every one's experience; and the effect of this in turn was to find discrimination among the parts of my subject again and again difficult—so inseparably and beautifully they seemed to hang together and the comprehensive case to decline mutilation or refuse to be treated otherwise than handsomely. -

Restoring and decorating it sympathetically, it became his main home for the rest of his life, a comfortable retreat where the observer of society could himself entertain guests. -

David K. Kirby HENRY JAMES: ART AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY Georges Poulet is correct in stating that the memory for Henry James ts an "inexhaustible reservoir'? James was aware of the likelihood of his being overwhelmed, on occasion, with a flood of images from the past, and this realization is nowhere more fully stated than in his autobiographical writings, to which Poulet frequently refers. The same source reveals another problem that the memory poses for James, however, a pitfall with which Poulet does not deal. This second dif ficulty lies, not in the overproductivity of the memory, but rather in its under productivity. For James, the memory either overwhelms one with an un controllable flood of recollections, or it falls short of the mark when one re quires a particular aspect or small detail of some past occurrence. It will be seen that James solves this double problem with a single solu tion: he brings the controls of art to bear on the unwieldy realities of life. By doing so, he necessarily imparts to art a peculiar reality of its own, and one of the intents of this essay is to signify the implications of this procedure, both in the autobiographical volumes and in James's writing generally. The most striking feature of Henry James's three-volume autobiography A Small Boy and Others, Notes of a Son and Brothers, and the unfinished Middle Years- is doubtless the author's concern with memory. Memory, for James, is a nebulous entity which nonetheless has a substance that must be in some fashion controlled if it is to be appreciated. -

humanities Article Henry James Reads Walter Scott Again Oliver Herford Department of English Literature, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK; [email protected] Abstract: This article reassesses Henry James’s attitude to the historical novels of Walter Scott in light of James’s observation, made early on in the First World War, that the current global situation “makes Walter Scott, him only, readable again”. Scott’s novels were strongly associated for James with young readers and a juvenile, escapist mode of reading; and yet close attention to James’s comments on Scott in his criticism, notebooks and correspondence, and examination of a recurring image of children as readers and listeners to oral stories in the work of both authors, indicate that James engaged with Scott’s presentation of the historical and personal past more extensively and in more complex ways than have hitherto been suspected. Scott’s example as a novelist and editor notably informs James’s practice in several late works: the family memoir Notes of a Son and Brother (1914), the New York Edition of his novels and tales (1907–1909), and the unfinished, posthumously published novel The Sense of the Past (1917). 3 POUND AND HENRY JAMES’S “SMALL BOY” PERSONA Caterina Ricciardi Nowhere else but in aristocratic London, Ezra Pound cultivated an American, either “half-savage” or more refined, public pose. His photographs of the time tell us so. One thinks of Coburn’s defiant portrait in a dressing gown à la Whistler (or à la Mauberley), or of a number of infor - mal snapshots showing his “cowboy” and Whitmanesque young man-about-town casual attire for his morning errands in the immediate neighborhoods of Church Walk, Kensington. That was the twofold “poet’s outfit” which he replaced with a “tuxedo,” or dinner jacket (again à la Whistler), for his evening lectures (Carpenter 129). Such was Pound’s London inner/public persona. Whistler, rather than the too richly elegant, Italianate John Singer Sargent so beloved by Henry James, was the model for the new provincial American artist in the metropolis of that era. Like Whistler and James, Pound too was an exile. As a matter of fact, he came to Europe from a very diversi - fied assemblage of parts of America: the West, New England (through his forbears), New York, and Philadelphia. Yet, at that time in London, he felt, in mind Quaderni di Palazzo Serra 15 (2008): 65-77. 66 Caterina Ricciardi and spirit, somewhat closer to the charming and witty American Whistler than to anyone else. Whistler, with his straw Yankee hat, “extraordinary long cane,” and an “American accent larded with French expressions” (MacDonald 9), always playing with character and appearance both in life and work, could offer Pound a distinctive outfit: natively outspoken, sometimes informal and bohemian or oth - erwise – according to the opportunity – dandyish.
