Historical Note In 1964, Sullivan opened the first Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) in an old jail in Philadelphia. OIC offered life skills classes and vocational training. Students enrolled to complete a GED, learn interview skills, or take job-specific courses in fields such as secretarial skills, bookkeeping, plumbing, brick masonry, welding, or drafting. OIC also worked with local industries to assure that necessary skills were being taught and to place graduates in jobs. OIC began to expand outside of Philadelphia and across the United States in 1965. Groups that wanted to establish a new OIC would contact the OIC headquarters for assistance in creating a center. OIC began holding an annual Convocation in 1969, a national event for OIC employees and graduates. In 1969, OIC began to expand into Africa. External assistance came largely through USAID. OICs were gradually established in other locations as well, with some in Europe and in various other places, including Australia, India, Haiti and Canada. With the global expansion of OIC, the leadership was divided between Opportunities Industrialization Centers America (OICA) and Opportunities Industrialization Centers International (OICI).

31 Leon Howard Sullivan papers, circa 1969-2000 Manuscript Collection No. 1086 Series 4 Sullivan Principles, 1971-1999 Boxes 54-71

Scope and Content Note This series consists of correspondence and subject files on the Sullivan Principles from 1971-1999. Developed in 1977 by Reverend Sullivan, the Sullivan Principles are corporate codes of conduct designed to promote corporate social responsibility. The original Sullivan Principles targeted U.S. corporations in South Africa, aiming to end apartheid through economic pressure. The Global Sullivan Principles, which went into effect in 1999, aim to promote corporate social responsibility on the international level. The general correspondence (1971-1995) mainly includes correspondence between Sullivan and corporations that were signatories to the Sullivan Principles, as well as a smaller amount of correspondence with various other organizations involved in apartheid. Sullivan kept two types of subject files: materials concerning politics and social justice in South Africa, which he kept in chronological files by year (1971-1997); and subject files on the administration of the Sullivan Principles, from his announcement of the Principles in 1977 through the development of the Global Sullivan Principles in 1999. The South Africa subject files contain reports, notes, clippings, and brochures related to events or organizations with which Sullivan was not directly involved. The majority of the material concerns the effects of apartheid on employment, housing, and education. Some material pertains to the effects of the Sullivan Principles on corporate practices in South Africa. The administrative subject files include correspondence and printed material pertaining to operations of the committees, organizations, and conventions that regulated the Sullivan Principles. Sullivan also wrote a number of speeches and articles on the Sullivan Principles; for these, refer to the writing series.

36 Leon Howard Sullivan papers, circa 1969-2000 Manuscript Collection No. 1086 Series 5 Published and unpublished writings, 1939-1999 Boxes 72-90

Scope and Content Note This series consists of writings primarily by Sullivan from the 1939-1999. The series contains drafts and published copies of articles, books, interviews, sermons, songs and prayers, speeches, and writings by others. Sullivan's writings include multiple drafts and notes. When identifiable, these notes have been kept with the finished and published versions of his writings. Sullivan's articles (1969-1995) address black advancement, the Sullivan Principles, and concerns of various organizations with which he was involved. The books section contains notes, drafts, and proofs of his books. Interviews (1971-1992), the smallest section, contains transcripts and clippings of interviews of Sullivan in magazines, on talk shows, and to various organizations. Prayers, poetry, and religious songs composed by Sullivan form another small section. Sermons and speeches comprise the largest part of the series. Nearly all sermons were delivered at Zion Baptist Church (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) during Sullivan's tenure as minister (1950-1988). The sermons frequently combine religious lessons with calls for social and political activism, both in the black community at home and in Sub-Saharan and South African communities. Sullivan often wrote several versions of the same speech, sometimes changing its name. Different versions are kept in the same folder and are cross-listed by title. Speeches (1967-1999) were given at board meetings, commencement ceremonies, Opportunities Industrialization Centers events, and upon receipt of awards and honorary degrees. Some speeches are also Congressional testimony. This series also includes writings by others (1971-1994), which include drafts of speeches, articles, sermons, and Congressional testimony by various individuals involved with Sullivan.
