SHORANUR- A PRELUDE

Shoranur is a major Railway junction in , situated on the banks of Bharathapuzha River. It is ideally located, serving as a threshold to the middle and North Kerala in respect of reaching by rail. During the British rule itself the significance of Shoranur was rightly understood and they laid the rails converting Shoranur as a major Railway station so as to connect Kerala to different parts of . The world famous cultural institution ‘Kerala Kala Mandalam’ is situated just 4 kms from Shoranur by the side of Shoranur –Trichur state highway. Panchakarma research institute and Kerala Ayurved samajom are the ayurvedic hospitals that are situated nearby. Shoranur is a land of temple festivals. Each temple celebrates its festivals giving a unique opportunity to interact with the cultural heritage. People throng in large numbers irrespective of cast, creed and religion during festival season. The historic Sreekrishna temple at Guruvayoor and Bhagavathi temple at Kadampuzha are easily accessible by road from Shoranur. One cannot forget the train journey which passes through the heart of Valluvanadan villages to road, a tourist destination. A new chapter was written in the history of Shoranur when the steam loco shed was started more than hundred years ago for catering the needs of steam locos. More than 3000 employees were directly engaged in the shed. Consequent to the abolition of steam locos in 1980, various other activities were undertaken in the shed, the present one is IOH of coaches. A significant phase has started with the commissioning of CNC Pit Wheel Lathe in 2012 which caters to the need of other divisions also. Taking into consideration of its vast Railway land and the infrastructure facilities now available, Shoranur still has the potential to maintain an express train originating from SRR.

ACTIVITIES . 1. This is an ISO 9001:2008 certified depot since 2013. 2. IOH of the all the Primary Maintained coaches of the division are done at SRR with an average 35 coaches per month. Unlike other IOH depots of Southern Railway the bogie overhauling is also undertaken with axle box bearing certification by GOC shop staff. 3. One CNC under floor pit wheel lathe of HEC make is available and being used for tyre turning of coaches, locos and MEMUs. At an average of 132 Wheels per month. 4. For accident relief one class- A ART with 140 Ton crane is available. The shed for accommodating crane is nearing completion. One SPART with Scale I ARME is also available at SRR. 5. Primary Maintenance of 84 passenger coaches are under taken with one pit line of 12 coach 6. One running room with 53 beds including four exclusive beds for lady running staff is available. Three time subsidized food is provided for running staff. The maintenance of running room is outsourced. 7. One combined crew booking point is working round the clock and all the running staff are booked in CMS. 8. Clean Train Station (CTS) is operational at SRR from March 2015 which is functioning between 06.00 to 22.00 hrs deploying 48 men per shift throughout sourcing. Daily average of 22 rains with 287 coaches cleaned. 9. One bio toilet lab is established for testing the effluent from bio toilets. 10. Carriage watering of through trains is also attended at SRR . 11. Monthly attention to Tower wagons based at SRR and PGT TRD depots
