    Killian Chavez-Lavelle 1 Geo 406 Dr. Phillips 11-27-2017 The Legal Lynching of Ray Ross in Fayette County, Kentucky Introduction The purpose of this paper is to explore the system of legal lynchings conducted in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. Legal lynchings used the guise of a court trial to sentence people to death, disproportionately targeting the African-American community. For this narrative we will look at the trial and sentencing of Ray Ross and African-American house painter from Kentucky who was accused of raping a 9-year-old African-American girl and who was sentenced to death, and the first under an amended 1910 death penalty statute (section 1137) in Kentucky of hanging those who were found guilty of rape and rape & murder following the 1920 rape of a 9 year old white girl by an African-American man, Will Lockett. Lynching is defined as someone being put to death, by a mob, and prominently features hanging among other forms of torture, usually without repercussion from the law. Lynchings were commonplace in the south mostly after the civil war, when white southerners displeased with the governments passing of the 14th amendment giving full citizenship to former slaves. The roots of lynching comes from the former days of slavery, when a slave would escape and be re- captured, the slave master would hang the individual from a tree so to make an example for the rest of the slaves so that they would not try and escape and face a similar punishment. Many of the recorded lynchings were a spectacle of the town or city where they took place; families would come out, politicians, officers of the law and shopkeepers.

Jones For Louis Birch Unlikely as it may appear, a volume of poetry once described as the "first important work of Yiddish literature in America"1 was written in Lexington between 1918 and 1922. The author of this gathering of narrative poems, issued in New York in 1925 with the title Kentucky, was an immigrant named Israel Jacob Schwartz, who came to Lexington to open a millinery shop, which he operated until the beginning of the Great Depression. When he arrived in Lexington in 1918, he was already a distinguished figure in Yiddish literary circles, a member of an influential group of poets who had, a decade earlier, set out to sing America's praises under the inspiration of Walt Whitman, 2 and he deserves recognition among the lesser-known authors who have contributed to the rich and varied literature about Kentucky.

It highlights the pervasiveness of lynch mob violence, the failure of local, state, and federal governments to prevent lynching and how these factors combined to shape the development of black grassroots protest in the Delta region. Given this background, this dissertation traces how Delta blacks responded to the crisis of white lynch mob violence in a variety of contexts. Specifically, it examines the rise and decline of black lynch mobs, black violent confrontations with white mobs as well as lynching’s impact on black popular culture and historical memory. My main contention is that these disparate but related responses represent a grassroots tradition of black resistance to white lynch mob violence. This dissertation counters histories of lynching that have tended to view black lynch victims and black communities as primarily passive victims of white mob violence. It moves beyond histories of black anti-lynching protest that have primarily focused on prominent black spokespersons and national organizations that lobbied for state and federal anti-lynching legislation.

It highlights the pervasiveness of lynch mob violence, the failure of local, state, and federal governments to prevent lynching and how these factors combined to shape the development of black grassroots protest in the Delta region. Given this background, this dissertation traces how Delta blacks responded to the crisis of white lynch mob violence in a variety of contexts. Specifically, it examines the rise and decline of black lynch mobs, black violent confrontations with white mobs as well as lynching’s impact on black popular culture and historical memory. My main contention is that these disparate but related responses represent a grassroots tradition of black resistance to white lynch mob violence. This dissertation counters histories of lynching that have tended to view black lynch victims and black communities as primarily passive victims of white mob violence.

  • Beyond the Rope
    Beyond the Rope Beyond the Rope is an interdisciplinary study that draws on narrative theory and cultural studies methodologies to trace African Americans’ changing attitudes and rela- tionships to lynching over the twentieth century. Whereas African Americans are typically framed as victims of white lynch mob violence in both scholarly and public dis- courses, Karlos K. Hill reveals that in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, African Americans lynched other African Americans in response to alleged criminality, and twentieth-century black writers envisaged African American lynch victims as exemplars of heroic manhood. Beyond the Rope illuminates the submerged histories of black vigilantism and black-authored narratives of the lynched black body in order to demonstrate that, rather than being static and one-dimensional, African American attitudes toward lynching and the lynched black evolved in response to changing social and political contexts.
