Anabaptist Dramatic Readings by Alan Kreider and Eleanor Kreider 3 Anabaptist Dramatic Readings by Alan Kreider and Eleanor Kreider 4 Introduction to Anabaptist Dramatic Readings The Anabaptists are exciting! Christians of over 400 years ago have things to say to us and can change our lives. Are we ready to listen? We discovered the Anabaptists’ relevance as we, for ten years, traveled around England visiting Anabaptist Study Groups. For some years English Christians of many denominations have been discovering Anabaptism. Many of them are now members of study groups in the Anabaptist Network. They enjoy discussing their own lives and the lives of their congregations in light of Anabaptist writings. There is Anabaptist life in England! We developed the Anabaptist Dramatic Readings in this collection for use by these English study groups. We chose topics that seemed important, and personalities that are colorful and reveal the variety of the early Anabaptist movement. We have based the readings on 16th-century historical sources and represent solid scholarship. But we have felt free to alter them. We have shortened most of the sources, often simplifying the language. In a few instances, we have written dramas that are our own, imaginatively entering into the situations of the early Anabaptists in order to bring them to life. We’ve always tried to be fair, both to the Anabaptists and their opponents. When English people used these readings, how did they “work”? Pretty well. We discovered that people found it easier to deal with ideas when they meet the Anabaptists themselves. Further, we found that people enjoyed “playing” the stories. They didn’t need to rehearse them or perform them with professional polish; they could simply stand up and read the texts. Some people read them quite coolly. Others allowed themselves to make faces, to express anger and pain, to gesture, whisper and sing. Almost always, the dramatic readings led to good discussions, and the participants had fun as they studied history. Baptists, Anglicans, Mennonites and Pentecostals said that the dramas helped them to develop a deeper sense of identity as Christians—as Anabaptist Christians. Invariably, questions arose and we didn’t always know the answers. For informational questions, good sources are available, and some of these are now online. Pride of place must go to the Mennonite Encyclopedia, now available as the Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (www.gameo.org). An indispensable resource is C. Arnold Snyder’s Anabaptist History and Theology: Revised Student Edition (Kitchener, ON: Pandora Press, 1997) and should be in every Mennonite school library. Students may want to do further reading for class papers on topics growing out of the dramas. And the dramas raise questions that go beyond information. Can we allow ourselves to dialogue with the Anabaptists, questioning them in light of our experiences and letting them question us? We returned to our native USA in 2000. Since then, we have used these dramatic readings in many settings—churches, small groups, seminary classes and schools. When the leaders of the Mennonite Education Agency experienced how these readings worked in the classroom, they encouraged us to prepare them for wider distribution. This collection of 24 readings is our response to their commission. We hope that you, wherever you find yourself, will find these dramas fascinating and useful. Most of all, we hope that they will inspire you. May you follow in Christ’s footsteps with hope and joy. Alan Kreider and Eleanor Kreider May 6, 2011 Anabaptist Dramatic Readings by Alan Kreider and Eleanor Kreider 5 Who are Alan and Eleanor Kreider? Alan and Eleanor have been involved in the Mennonite church and Mennonite education for many years. From 1968-1972, they both taught at Goshen College: Eleanor in music and Alan in history. In 1974, after two years for historical research and musical training in England, they were appointed as Mennonite missionaries to England. Together, Alan and Eleanor were in charge of the London Mennonite Centre, 1974-1991. They also served as elders of Wood Green Mennonite Church in London. During these years Alan lectured part-time in church history at London School of Theology (formerly London Bible College). From 1991 to 1995, Alan and Eleanor served as theologians-in-residence at the Northern Baptist College in Manchester, England. Alan also lectured in history at the University of Manchester. In 1995, for their final five years in England, the Kreiders moved to Oxford, England. They were both members of the Theology Faculty of Oxford University and based at Regents Park College. Alan became the director of the Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture, and Eleanor taught liturgy and worship. During the 1990s, the Kreiders taught and spoke in theological colleges and conferences in many countries, e.g. Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Bible College of New Zealand; conferences in India, Japan, Indonesia and Australia. In 1993 Alan became the book review editor for Anabaptism Today and continued to serve in that role until 2000. In 2000 Kreiders moved from Oxford to Elkhart, Ind., and have continued their work as traveling teachers, speakers and mission educators for the Mennonite Mission Network. Alan taught church history half-time at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary until he retired in 2010 but continues teaching one course in early church history each year. Alan occasionally teaches courses for the Anabaptist Learning Institute, an educational program of Mennonite Schools Council and MEA. Their son, Andrew, his wife Katie and their three children also live in Elkhart, Ind. The Kreiders are members of Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart.     CHAPTER TEN ANABAPTIST RELIGIOUS LITERATURE AND HYMNODY John D. Rempel Introduction This study will concern itself with devotional texts that have left a lasting mark on Anabaptism and its descendent movements. All of them were written by adherents of these movements. Modern schol- arship has identified an ever widening diversity in the character and literature of Anabaptism, and so, even within the broad criterion of texts that have had enduring influence further selection needs to be made on the following grounds. To begin with, I sought to represent the diverse expressions of Anabaptism theologically, geographically, and chronologically. My goal was to highlight continuities, discontinuities, and commonalities. In addition, I wanted to draw attention to neglected but formative writers and writings. In the third place, I wanted to give the numerous but little known texts on worship a place within the literature of Anabaptism as a whole. Riedemann’s hymns and Clock’s prayers are illustrative of both points two and three. And finally, I thought it important to show how different authors come to terms with the unstable relationship in much of Anabaptism between inner and outer, Spirit and matter. The consequence of this approach was that a figure of the stature of Michael Sattler is represented only in Golden Apples in Silver Bowls, a compendium of the later Swiss Brethren tradition, leaving the Ausbund to represent that strand’s earlier religiosity. Similarly, Dirk Philips does not have his own entry but his mindset is represented in part by Menno Simons and Thielman van Braght. By the same token, a word needs to be said about including two figures whose ecclesiology—in different ways—is marginal to the movement as a whole, Balthasar Hubmaier and Hans Denck.

Pp. xvii+414. Hardcover, $49.95 USD. One of the hallmarks of Mennonite history and identity is suf- fering. Mennonites have valorized suffering across the ages in tales of martyrs, migrants, conscientious objectors, and of victims of persecutions of many stripes. Of particular staying power within Mennonite and Anabaptist circles is the monumental Martyrs Mir- ror, and in particular the iconic image of Dirk Willems. David Weaver-Zercher in his book, Martyrs Mirror: A Social History, has provided a timely and invigorating exploration of the history of Martyrs Mirror. Though his thesis is self-described as “straight- forward,” in that Martyrs Mirror functioned and still functions “as a measure of Christian faithfulness” (x). The stories of martyrs thus are much more than heroic tales, rather, they play a pedagog- ical role in transmitting the model answer to one of the key reformation questions, how to live the Christian life. For Mennon- ites and Anabaptists, martyrs exemplified “spiritual resolve” and “the content of authentic faith” (x). As straightforward a thesis it is, Weaver-Zercher has written an intricate and sophisticated history of a book, its reception, and the role it played for a religious people centuries and continents re- moved from its seventeenth-century authorship. If the book has largely remained the same, the reading of it has not. To approach the subject, Weaver-Zercher divided his book into three parts each with four chapters.

The smooth and rough children of western Europe at the millennium, in their black designer dresses or their spiked hair and pierced eyebrows, do not spend nights arguing infant baptism, the uses of the sword, or the perils and advantages of a state church, as my ancestors did during the Anabaptist Reformation of 1525. If today’s citizens were to meet to study the New Testament and reach conclusions about its meaning contrary to those of the state church, the worst they would suffer is ridicule. When my wife Marlyce and I crossed ancient European borders no one asked about our passports, let alone our religion; as long as our cash and credit cards held out, we were free as any bird. So we went our quiet way across Holland and France and Switzerland and Ger- many, sometimes simple travelers enjoying the food and the sights, sometimes pilgrims in pursuit of the strange, small traces of our past.     6TH MAY 2020 Forgotten Victims from the Age of Atrocity Professor Alec Ryrie This last lecture of this series on religious atrocities in the age of the Reformation and the religious wars, is about victims who were denied the limelight, who did not receive the full on-stage treatment in their own time. One of the features of atrocities that we have seen again and again is that not all victims are equal. Some – only a few, really – of those who died untimely deaths in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries died in just such a way that their deaths were useful to their contemporaries and successors; they could be made into myths, they helped to populate the world with heroes and villains, to warn successive generations against lowering their guard, or to train them in self-sacrificial virtue, or to remind them of why some truths could never be compromised. Meanwhile, most of the dead were passed over in silence because no-one, or not enough people, had a point they wanted to use them to make. A single death is a tragedy, Stalin supposedly said, and a million deaths are a statistic: but neither is an atrocity, not until someone makes it one, by deciding who needs to be celebrated, who needs to be blamed, and what lessons the survivors and successors of the dead should draw. And as we have also seen throughout this series, the making of atrocities never stands still. Some atrocities fade into memory, like the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Atrocities that were once terrifying become the stuff of jokes, like the Spanish Inquisition.

    CHURCH HISTORY LITERACY Lesson 56 & 57 Anabaptists, Hutterites, Mennonites, Amish, and Brethren We have studied Luther and his spiritual revolution waged against the Church and government of his day. While Luther was fighting for justification by faith in Germany, another movement to the south was struggling against the religious and governmental powers as well. The scene: Switzerland and Bavaria; the time: 1520’s; the cause: Biblical Christianity. Here, however, the adversary to free religious expression was equally Protestant as it was Catholic. As with Luther, the stage was set for things to happen in the area of human thought and belief. The advent of the printing press made writing more available. The ready availability of writing made literacy more important and useful. Increased literacy brought on the greater sharing of ideas, and western civilization found itself in the midst of a renaissance of learning. The dark ages were moving rapidly into history as civilization moved forward. Understandably, this energy for learning and change affected every arena of public and personal life, and religion was in no way excluded. The effect of putting the Bible in mass distribution and giving people the education to read and understand it was huge. More and more people would read the Bible and question the doctrines and practices the church authorities taught. It was no coincidence that this same renaissance brought on exploration as countries and adventurers set out to find new trade routes and treasures. The discovery of the New World brought a measure of discomfort in the intellect and in faith. People were recognizing that the world was greater than previously thought.

Coggins Winnipeg "To define the essence is to shape it afresh." - Ernst Troeltsch Twentieth-century Anabaptist historiography has somewhat of the character of Hegelian philosophy, consisting of an already established Protestant-Marxist thesis, a Mennonite antithesis and a recent synthesis. The debate has centred on three major and related issues: geographic origin, intellectual sources, and essence. Complicating these issues has been confusion over the matter of categorization: Just who is to be included among the Anabaptists and who should be assigned to other groups? Indeed, what are the appropriate categories, or groups, in the sixteenth century? This paper will attempt to unravel some of the tangled debate that has gone on concerning these issues. The Protestant interpretation of Anabaptism has the longest aca- demic tradition, going back to the sixteenth century. Developed by such Protestant theologians and churchmen as Bullinger, Melanchthon, Men- ius, Rhegius and Luther who wrote works defining and attacking Ana- baptism, this interpretation arose out of the Protestant understanding of the church. Sixteenth-century Protestants believed in a single universal church corrupted by the Roman Catholic papacy but reformed by them- selves. Anyone claiming to be a Christian but not belonging to the church Joitnlal of Mennonite Stitdies Vol. 4,1986 184 Journal ofMennonite Studies (Catholic or Protestant) was classed as a heretic,' a member of the mis- cellaneous column of God's sixteenth-century army. Byram Professor Anna Grotans Copyright by Ursula Berit Jany 2013 Abstract Anabaptism, a radical reform movement originating during the sixteenth-century European Reformation, sought to attain discipleship to Christ by a separation from the religious and worldly powers of early modern society. In my critical reading of the movement’s representations in German fiction dating from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, I explore how authors have fictionalized the religious minority, its commitment to particular theological and ethical aspects, its separation from society, and its experience of persecution. As part of my analysis, I trace the early historical development of the group and take inventory of its chief characteristics to observe which of these aspects are selected for portrayal in fictional texts. Within this research framework, my study investigates which social and religious principles drawn from historical accounts and sources influence the minority’s image as an ideal society, on the one hand, and its stigmatization as a heretical and seditious sect, on the other. As a result of this analysis, my study reveals authors’ underlying programmatic aims and ideological convictions cloaked by their literary articulations of conflict-laden encounters between society and the religious minority.

    The Roots of Anabaptist Empathetic Solidarity, Nonviolent Advocacy, and Peacemaking John Derksen Introduction uch of Mennonite nonviolent advocacy and peacebuild- ing today finds its roots in sixteenth-century Anabaptism. But Msixteenth-century Anabaptists were diverse. In keeping with the polygenesis viewSAMPLE of Anabaptist origins, this paper assumes diversity in the geography, origins, cultures, shaping influences, spiritual orientations, attitudes to violence, and other expressions of Anabaptists.1 We define Anabaptists as those who accepted (re)baptism or believer’s baptism and the implications of that choice. Various Anabaptists had sectarian, ascetic, spiri- tualist, social revolutionary, apocalyptic, rationalistic, or other orientations, and the distinctions between them were often blurred. Geographically, they emerged in Switzerland in 1525, in South Germany-Austria in 1526, and in the Netherlands in 1530. Many agree that the Anabaptists displayed 1. Positively, the ‘Word of God’ served as a rallying point for all, but differences . emerged over how it was understood and used.”2 While Swiss Anabaptists tended to fa- vor sectarianism after the 1525 Peasants’ War, South German and Austrian Anabaptists tended more toward spiritualism, and early Dutch Anabaptists tended toward apocalyptic thinking.

    Stories to Sustain a Peace Church Aldred Neufeldt with Tim Schmucker and Harold Thiessen Texts: Romans 12:19-21; Matthew 5:38-48 Today we celebrate Peace Sunday. It’s also Remembrance Day. It first was called Armistice Day when, exactly 100 years ago – on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – a treaty ended the Great War– a war to end all wars, as some called it. Throughout the war both opposing forces told their citizens that God was on their side. By its end at least 10 million combatants died – two times as many were injured. And then there were the millions of civilian deaths – 40 million died in all, are the statistics I’ve seen. These deaths are remembered today in Canada – beginning at our memorials in France. Who here has visited Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy Ridge? You walk on Canadian soil when you’re there – land bequeathed by France – so Canada’s first Remembrance Day celebration today took place there. It’s profoundly moving to walk amongst the graves, thousands of them, row on row, the figure of a weeping woman looking over the field of dead below. Guides speak poignantly to what happened – and, if you listen to the subtext, you can’t help but conclude that war is a stupid way to solve problems. To me, a visit there underscored how important our Anabaptist peace witness is. At the end of that ugly time there was little appetite for war – mostly grief and remembering – and a call to end all wars.
