GUNBY JORDAN’S QUEST FOR A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL SYSTEM IN COLUMBUS, GEORGIA by Lauren Yarnell Bradshaw Under the Direction of Chara Haeussler Bohan ABSTRACT G. Gunby Jordan, a southern industrialist, banker, and philanthropist, became one of the forefathers of modern vocational educational practices in the United States. Exercising his influence in various economic endeavors as well as most educational experiments in Columbus, GA, he developed a “practical” educational system that began to resemble the stratified and paternalistic textile mill towns that dominated Columbus, GA in the early twentieth century. The purpose of this research is to document the influence that Jordan’s policies, ideals, and friends had on the development of vocational education in Columbus, GA. Racial and class conflicts impacted the success of educational reforms began by Jordan; these themes are continually explored throughout this research in order to discern how they influenced the policies and legacy of G. Gunby Jordan. This manuscript is organized by a combination of thematic and chronological structures. When chronological order would benefit the understanding of the subject of the research it will be employed; but in order to engage the reader in a myriad of topics and ideas throughout this dissertation, the thematic approach presents itself as the more desirable alternative than simple chronology. Despite Jordan’s contributions to the history of vocational education, no biography of Jordan has ever been written, thus Jordan’s influence within the city gave birth to a specific kind of education that has yet to be explored. Utilizing historical research methods, I have incorporated primary sources from numerous archives, historic newspapers, the private collection of the Jordan family, and numerous secondary resources to analyze Jordan’s educational influence in Columbus, GA. This research revealed that the power of Jordan’s monumental contributions to educational policies was due to his political and financial status; this combination produced an industrial tycoon, an educational idealist, and a man who was an agent for change. Jordan did not act alone in his reforms for Columbus. Through his collaboration with industrial and philanthropist colleagues, he was able to make significant improvements to libraries, adult education, kindergartens, vocational education, and African American education in Columbus while continuing policies that would discriminate and subjugate those who were deemed unworthy of moral, social, and economic promotion.     Wilson’s Single-Taxers: Urban Radicalism on the National and International Stage On April 20th, 1914, the Colorado National Guard fired on a colony of striking coal workers killing several, including women and children. In response to what came to be known as the Ludlow Massacre, the reformer George Creel rushed back from New York to mobilize in solidarity with the workers. Creel had earned an impressive reputation in the state as a radical agitator. His decision, after being appointed Denver’s police commissioner, to take batons away from the police force had made him one of the most controversial characters in Colorado. Within three weeks of the massacre, Creel pulled together a protest of ten thousand at the state capital. As a follower of Henry George, a so-called single-taxer, he believed that the earth was communal property and saw the Ludlow labor battle as a facet of the larger struggle for the land. At the protest Creel proposed “a constitutional amendment … that will permit the state to develop its own natural resources, dig its own coal, harness its own streams, water its own deserts, to the end that workers may be protected and parasites destroyed.”i Had Creel been any other brand of left-wing radical the story would have ended there, but Creel had well-connected compatriots. Creel had worked with Frank Walsh under Joseph Folk, a Missouri Governor known nationally for prosecuting political corruption.ii In 1913 Walsh was appointed by Democrats in Congress to chair the Commission on Industrial Relations, a government study to determine the causes of industrial unrest.

    Rural Solutions in the Industrial Age: Joseph Fels, the Single Tax, and Land Reform ________________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board _______________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS _____________________________________________________________________ By Maureen Sherrard Thompson August, 2011 Thesis Approvals: Dr. Bryant Simon, Thesis Advisor, History Dr. Kenneth Kusmer, History ii ABSTRACT Joseph Fels, a wealthy Philadelphia soap manufacturer, subscribed to Henry George's single tax economic theory that considered land a natural resource to be used for the common good of all citizens. A hefty single tax levied on land values was intended to replace all other forms of taxation, in effect forcing landowners holding property for speculative purposes to use their land productively or make it available to others. In theory, wealthy land monopolists would be forced to pay an equitable share of taxes while the amount paid by the working class would be lowered to a proportionate level. Following the Panic of 1893 and the ensuing four-year depression gardening programs were established in major urban areas to support unemployed workers. In 1897 Joseph Fels helped to establish and finance the Philadelphia Vacant Lots Cultivation Association, and later, the Vacant Lots Cultivation Society in London, in addition to several farming colonies in the English countryside. He also financed several experimental living communities based on the single tax: Fairhope in Alabama, Arden in Delaware, and Rose Valley in suburban Philadelphia. In addition, Fels supported single tax candidates, and corresponded with national and international reformers including Samuel Gompers, Booker T. Washington, Beatrice and Sidney Webb, and George Bernard Shaw.

Many historians have described his dramatic race for mayor of New York on a Labor Party ticket in 1886. Few, however, have written about the relationship between George, who died in 1897, and his campaign manager, Tom Johnson, who as Mayor of Cleveland became the nation’s leading proponent of public ownership of utilities during the early 20 th century. Similarly absent from the literature is an appreciation of how Louis Post’s single-tax newspaper, The Public , modernized George’s policies for leading progressive reformers like Brand Whitlock, Newton Baker, William U’Ren, and Frederic C. Howe. Rather than fading after George’s death, the movement had by the 1910s developed a firm basis of power in American cities, where it expanded the Democratic Party’s reach and accrued the political capital to obtain high positions in the Wilson Administration.

Ames was then years old and had held her title since Yaddo fi rst opened its doors to creative “guests” in . John Cheever, whose relationship with both Ames and Yaddo was especially intimate, recognized Ames’ years of service by describing the tremendous creativity, which occurred at Yaddo during her tenure, e forty or so acres on which the studios and principle build- ings of Yaddo stand have seen more distinguished activity in the arts than any other piece of ground in the English-speak- ing community or perhaps in the entire world. As we all know, more than twelve hundred guests have stayed at Yaddo. e diversity, quantity and excellence of the work done here is staggering. ere has never been anything like it. Many of the men and women responsible for the vitality in American art have done their major work in these rooms.
