  • Mark's Music Notes for December 2011…
MARK’S MUSIC NOTES FOR DECEMBER 2011… The Black Keys follow up their excellent 2010 album Brothers with the upbeat El Camino, another great album that commercial radio will probably ignore just like it did with Brothers. In a day and age where CD sales are on the decline, record labels continue to re-issue classic titles with proven track records in new incarnations that include unreleased material, re-mastered sound, and often lavish box sets. Though not yet included in Music Notes, Pink Floyd and Queen both had their entire catalogs re-vamped this year, and they sound great. Jethro Tull’s classic Aqualung album has been expanded, re-mixed and re-mastered with the level of care and quality that should be the standard for all re-issues. The Rolling Stones have already released expanded remasters and box sets on Exile On Main Street and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, and now their top selling album, Some Girls has received the same treatment. Be Bop Deluxe is a 1970’s band that most readers will be unfamiliar with. They never had any mainstream success in the U.S., but the band had several great albums, and their entire studio catalog has recently been remastered and compiled into a concise box set. The Black Keys – El Camino Vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and Drummer Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, have said that they have been listening to a lot of Rolling Stones lately, and they set out to record a more direct rock and roll album than their last album, Brothers was.

  • Rolling Stones at Gillette Stadium, Foxboro on July 7
Keep On Moving: Exile at The Razor – Rolling Stones at Gillette Stadium, Foxboro on July 7 I first saw the Rolling Stones in fall 1989 on their Steel Wheels tour. At the time, being an adolescent punk rocker, I didn’t give a shit about “corporate rock” like the Stones. My dad, who loves the Stones, had tickets for the show at the old Foxboro Stadium. Someone had cancelled last minute so he had an extra ticket for the show and asked me to go. I weighed for a second like any moronic teenager whether to continue skateboarding or see the Rolling Stones. The deciding factor was that I liked their new single “Mixed Emotions” and even a jaded teenage punk had to respect Keith Richards. I loved the show and ever since the Stones have been my second favorite band of all time. The Stones were considered old and washed up in 1989, so surely 30 years later they might as well be the Egyptian pharaohs, right? Here is the thing with the Stones: They may wrinkle but they don’t get old. The No Filter tour hit Gillette Stadium, right next door to where I saw them 30 years ago. It started ominously for sure when it had to be delayed a month because Mick Jagger had to have heart surgery. Heart surgery for the lead singer would put any band on the shelf, but when the singer routinely runs about 5 miles during the course of a show and oh yeah… is in his mid-70s — one would think that was the end.

For a brief moment in time, two unbelievably talented minstrels came together in their studio's to make history. They have done it once before in 2004, with "All Wood and Stones", the first in this series. They never meant to create an act together but to pay homage to an incredible rock band. The Rolling Stones, a household name still today. Who could believe John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley could ever do these treasured songs in an acoustic frame! That first endeavor turned out to be so well loved, John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley ended up touring together to perform these brilliant songs acoustically as one act. By harnessing their expertise and melding their vocal genius, they have presented a new look and feel to some of The Rolling Stones best loved songs. The first album hit such a cord in fans globally, it became a fast favorite. Both John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley reside in California, USA. Both have exceptional careers individually and often were asked when they would come together to do another album. It was John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley's own love of The Rolling Stones and working together on a project, that ultimately brought this second in the series "All Wood and Stones II " to life. Well it has been 9 long years since they released All Wood and Stones. They have both continued their separate, incredibly successful careers since that first album. The big news is, John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley, two of the most sought after and well loved singers, guitarists and composers worldwide, have come together once again.

  • A Friday Ramble……….. June 29, 2017 After Three Terrific Years at PIMCO, I
A Friday ramble……….. June 29, 2017 After three terrific years at PIMCO, I will be retiring from the firm tomorrow; so please let me offer a few final thoughts. What I will miss most is the daily engagement with some of the brightest minds I have ever met; what I will not miss so much is the 4:00am alarm. But more salient to a Friday Ramble, let me summarize the common thread to all of my commentaries: “It is always about character” Before joining PIMCO I spent twenty six years at Merrill Lynch; and I will confirm to you that less than a dozen people, whose hubris was only exceeded by a damaged moral compass, collapsed the firm. Perhaps they broke no laws, but that makes it all the more shameful. Broadly similar, I have made no secret of my distaste for Donald Trump. This has little to do with his policies (many of which I support in principle since I am a registered Republican), but rather that he is a man of bad character. Unlike Newt (and McConnell, Ryan, etc.), I do believe that there are times where the ends do NOT justify the means. Which is a terrific segue into contrasting PIMCO with this rogues gallery. While most of you have a tenure here that laps me a few times over, it did not take too long for me to recognize that PIMCO’s core values of integrity and trust underpin our phenomenal success; and will surely support our continued growth. We are the guardians of our client’s capital, sometimes the savings of a life’s effort, and a few extra basis points can never buy back trust once it is damaged.
