Football: Broad Run Shuts Out Park View, 35-0, to Start Season

By Dan Sousa Viva Loudoun Editor

(Aug. 28, 2012) - For a quarter in Friday's opener at Park View High School it looked as if visiting Broad Run was stuck in preseason scrimmage mode but sophomore quarterback Brady Reitzel and a stout Spartan defense soon shifted into midseason mode with three touchdowns in the final 4:39 of the first half on the way to a 35-0 shutout.

The long-time rivals -- Broad Run (1969) and Park View (1976) were the third and fourth high schools opened in Loudoun which now has 13 high schools total -- were in a scoreless deadlock when Reitzel, making his starting QB debut, got in the groove, capping off drives with TD runs of 2 and 8 yards and then finding junior Corey Hilberath all alone down the left sidelines for a 40-yard TD.

Broad Run kept the momentum going in the second half, scoring on their first two drives, to make it five consecutive touchdowns and a 35-0 lead. At that point, Broad Run emptied the bench and the game finished quickly with a running clock due to the VHSL "slaughter rule".

The Spartan defense, led by new defensive coordinator Chris Brown, held the Patriots to just 94 total yards (67 rushing on 30 attempts and 27 yards passing) and Park View did not advance the ball into Broad Run territory until late in the game.

Reitzel (11 for 70 yards) led a Spartan rushing attack that piled up 263 yards on 42 attempts with junior Da'Qwan Earl (12 for 64), sophomore Chuck Davis (6 for 25), and Hilberath (5 for 48) moving the chains along with senior Justin Burrell (6 for 18) and senior Darion Bunting (2 for 38).

The Spartan passing game showcased five receivers with big-playmaker senior Dorian Jenkins catching one ball for 20 yards. Reitzel finished the night 7 for 14 for 99 yards.

Park View's rushing attack behind sophomore Henry Argueta (10 for 36 yards) and senior Ben Stanton (8 for 14 yard) was able to control the clock in the first quarter but the Patriots could not mount any drives and an interception by Earl early gave Broad Run good field position which they maintained all night. Park View's average starting point was their own 20 in the game while Broad Run started its average drive at their own 46.

The Broad Run defense held Park View without a first down for six consecutive drives while the Spartans were scoring on five straight possessions.

Broad Run's first scoring drive started with Reitzel and Jenkins hooking up for 20 yards and then the Spartans reeled off 10 consecutive runs with Reitzel nosing the ball across the goal line on fourth down from the 2 with 4:39 left in the half.

After a 3-and-out, Jenkins punt return gave the Spartans the ball at the Patriots 40 and the Spartans needed just five plays to find the end zone as Reitzel weaved his way in from the 8 with 1:30 to go.

Broad Run coach Matt Griffis made great use of his time outs as he was able to stop the clock after each of Park View's ensuing plays from scrimmage and Broad Run again had the ball at the PV 40. Reitzel spotted Hilberath waltzing down the sideline uncovered and it was 21-0 with 55 seconds left in the half.

Any hopes of a Park View upset were erased to start the third quarter when Broad Run marched 70 yards on 14 plays with Earl scoring from the 4. The Spartans converted on three fourth down calls on the drive: Reitzel drew Park View offsides with a hard count on 4th-and-1 from the BR 39; Reitzel threw to Earl for 16 yards on 4th-and-5 from the PV 36; and Earl picked up eight yards on 4th-and-2 from the PV 12.

Broad Run's final score came with 2:02 left in the third quarter as Reitzel directed the team on an efficient 65-yard, 8-play jaunt. Hilberath scored his second TD of the contest, this time on a 12-yard run. Spartan kicker junior Billy Deane was perfect on PATs in the game and used his strong leg to pin back Park View on the kickoffs.

Broad Run will not have a lot of time to celebrate the win as the Spartans host Briar Woods Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a big non-district contest that features two programs that have combined to win the previous four Division 4 state titles (Briar Woods 2010, 2011 and Broad Run 2009, 2008). Park View is on the road Friday at Liberty High School.

Briar Woods Rallies for 20-15 Win at Broad Run

By Dan Sousa Viva Loudoun Editor Ashburn (Sept. 2, 2012) - The football team led Friday night for just 24 seconds of the 24 minute big non-district showdown at Broad Run but it was the right 24 seconds for the Falcons as they rallied behind senior running back Cory Colder and junior quarterback Trace McSorley for a dramatic 20-15 win over the Spartans.

2-time defending VHSL Division 4 state champion Briar Woods (2-0) won for the 16th straight game dating back to Broad Run's 14-0 win to open the 2011 season. It appeared as if the Spartans (1-1) would make it two straight over the Falcons after sophomore quarterback Brady Reitzel (102 yards rushing, 71 yards passing) led Broad Run to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Falcons defense, playing without South Carolina super recruit Matt Rolin who was on crutches on the sidelines after tweaking his ankle in practice during the week, didn't allow another point and the Briar Woods offense, trailing 15-8 at the half, rallied for two scores in the final 4:44 of the game including Colder's 9-yard TD scamper with 24 seconds to go.

Colder, who didn't get into the game into midway through the first quarter and then fumbled the ball away in the red zone on his second touch, was strong down the stretch, carrying the ball eight times for 37 yards on the Falcons 76-yard march that resulted in a 1-yard McSorley TD sneak with 4:44 to play. Briar Woods coach Charlie Pierce, showing confidence in his defense, rolled the dice and went for a 2-point conversion and the lead rather than opt for tying the game at 15-15 with a kick, but McSorley's pass fell short to leave Broad Run ahead, 15-14.

The Falcons defense forced a quick 3-and-out and Briar Woods took over at its own 49 with 2:59 left to set up the winning drive which took just six plays -- the biggest a 23-yard McSorley to Brandon Polk reception on 3rd-and-6 from the Spartan 44 with two minutes to go. Three straight Colder runs from the 21 put the ball in the end zone and send the Falcon side of the packed stadium into a frenzy.

The nice strike to Polk was not McSorley's biggest pass of the night as that came on the previous TD drive with Briar Woods facing a huge hole in 2nd-and-29 from their own 18 after back-to-back holding penalties. The game was marred by flags flying as the two teams racked up a total of 23 penalties for 210 yards including 10 holding calls on the night.

The Falcons might have felt good about the 2nd-and-29 as they were facing 1st-and-36 from the 11 before Colder carved out seven yards to prevent McSorely from having to drop back near his end zone. The Spartan defense was good on the second-and-long so McSorley went for broke with a heave down the middle of the field for Cam Serigne, who made an amazing leaping grab for a 38-yard gain at the Spartan 44.

That play energized the Falcons comeback effort and on the next play Colder was brought down by his face mask which turned a 7-yard gain into 22 total yards to the Spartan 22. Back-to-back Colder 8-yard gains put it to the 6 and two plays -- and two more penalties! -- later it was McSorley scoring.

McSorley, improving to 29-3 in his career as the Falcons QB1, threw for 123 yards in the win, rushed for 38 and had an interception on defense that started the Briar Woods defensive turnaround.

Reitzel and the Spartans shocked Briar Woods with a 68-yard TD hook-up with Dorian Jenkins on the game's fourth play from scrimmage. Just 62 seconds into the game and BR led 7-0.

Briar Woods responded with a long 15-play drive that ended with a fumble that Chuck Davis scooped up on the BR 10 and returned it five yards.

Broad Run needed just seven plays to move the ball 85 yards and doubled the lead to 15-0 after at two-point conversion. The elusive Reitzel had runs of 17, 16, 17 and 4 on the drive that was capped by Da'Qwan Earl's 2-yard score with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

Briar Woods came right back with another long drive, this time 14 plays for 80 yards, to score. Colder picked up steam on the drive, opening with runs of 11 and 18 yards. McSorley, facing 3rd-and-10 from the BR 26 hit Polk for 9 yards. On fourth and short, McSorley nosed ahead for two yards. Three plays later, Colder scored from the 6.

Broad Run, with 160 total yards on the first two drives, totaled just two yards on their last three possessions of the first half -- a 1 play possession with McSorley intercepting a pass, a drive which gained 1 yard before a punt and then one run to end the half.

The Spartans offense was back in tune to start the second half with a monster 17 play drive that took almost eight minutes but didn't result in any points. Broad Run was hurt by an illegal shift penalty that wiped out a big pass into the red zone but the Spartans were helped by a roughing the kicker penalty on a punt that put the b all on the Falcons 27.

On the very next play, however, BR started going backwards with a holding penalty on first down and then a fumble on the next play that left the Spartans facing 2nd-and-23. An incomplete pass and short run forced BR to punt with 11:11 left in the game. Briar Woods then took over after the 14-yard punt rolled out of bounds at their own 24 to start the first of the two TD drives that would decided the game. Woodbridge vs. Broad Run: Farrar gets Vikings off to fast start in 40-22 victory

By Preston Williams September 07, 2012

The focus for the Woodbridge football team during the preseason was to get off to a better start after beginning 0-3 in 2010 and 1-3 last year.

That better-start mantra goes for individual games, too. So when senior Logan Farrar returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown on Friday night in a 40-22 home win over Broad Run, his jaunt sent a ripple of confidence through his sideline, negating any aftertaste of the Vikings’ 32-0 loss to the Spartans last year.

“Oh, man, it’s a good feeling,” All-Met junior defensive end Da’Shawn Hand said of leading by a touchdown 14 seconds into the game. “It’s good for the defense, too. It’s like, okay, we’ve got to match that.”

The Vikings did that for a half, shutting out the Spartans. Woodbridge senior Jaylen Avent rushed for three touchdowns, including 36- and 37-yarders, and sophomore quarterback Mike Majette added a 66-yard touchdown run.

“We had that on our backs,” Avent said of the loss to Broad Run last year. “They hit us in our mouth last year. We came out and returned the favor.”

There was some of that late in the game, literally, when players from both teams were ejected for a dust-up after a Woodbridge extra point.

Farrar is a Commonwealth baseball recruit but would still consider college football offers, Woodbridge Coach Kevin Smith said. He is a prime example of the Vikings’ athleticism. Seven players had carries in the game for Woodbridge (2-0).

“It’s a good luxury to have right now,” Smith said.

Hand recovered a fumble after Broad Run (1- 2) drove to the Woodbridge 33-yard line in the first half, and he sacked Spartans sophomore quarterback Brady Reitzel on fourth down at midfield late in the third quarter.

“At the half, we were up 20-0,” Hand said. “But in our minds, we told everybody that we were down by 20. I think if we keep that mind- set then we’re good.”

Reitzel and sophomore Chuck Davis hooked up for two touchdown passes in the second half. Scoring Summary 1 2 3 4 OT Final SPARTANS 0 0 6 12 0 18 VIKINGS 12 6 6 12 0 36

Stone Bridge Takes the Battle of the Burn 37-14

By Dan Sousa Viva Loudoun Editor

Ashburn (Sept. 22, 2012) - Hey, it was called the Battle of the Burn ... do you think that senior quarterback Ryan Burns would really miss the game?!? Overcoming a dodgy ankle that limited him practice during the week, Burns was on fire Friday, throwing three touchdown passes on 10 of 16 passing for 154 yards in the Bulldogs commanding 37-14 non-district win over Broad Run before a standing room only crowd at the Spartans stadium.

Burns, a 6-foot-6 Stanford- bound recruit, could have actually had gaudier numbers as sure 70+ would-be TD pass was dropped but Stone Bridge (4-0 record) will take the comfortable victory compared to the 2011 Battle of the Burn (named for the rivalry between the two Ashburn schools just minutes apart) that saw the Bulldogs fall behind 24-0 before an incredible rally that led to a 31-30 overtime victory.

Broad Run (1-3) is stuck in a 3-game losing streak for the first time since 2005 with losses to three tough programs - Briar Woods, Woodbridge and Stone Bridge.

The Spartans did everything in their power to keep Stone Bridge senior defensive linemen Jon Allen, an Alabama-recruit, from wrecking havoc in the backfield. Broad Run's gameplan included a no huddle attack that had sophomore quarterback Brady Reitzel calling the play, signaled in from the sidelines, only after watching where Allen was lining up.

This tactic led to a nice opening drive by the Spartans that had them drive deep into Stone Bridge territory before a 22-yard field goal attempt was no good. The Bulldogs needed just one play to set the temp .. and that temp was one of lightning quick speed as senior Rassaun Goldring sprinted 55 yards on the first play and two plays later he jetted into the end zone on a 22-yard TD run. Senior Brendan Smedley's PAT made it 7-0 with 4:20 left in the first.

Turnovers, penalties and other miscues prevented Broad Run from establishing any offensive groove or gaining good field position the rest of the half and led the way to Stone Bridge scoring 17 points in the second quarter.

On Broad Run's first play from scrimmage after the Goldring TD run, Broad Run fumbled the ball away and Stone Bridge senior linebacker Luke Fitzgerald pounced on it at the Spartan 16. Broad Run's defense held and the Spartans took over at their own 15.

Several holding calls short-circuited a Broad Run drive and then a penalty on punt coverage gave Stone Bridge the ball at their own 34. Burns was able to find junior D'Ante Yarborough along the Bulldog sidelines for 10 yards on fourth-and-nearly 10 to keep the drive alive at midfield. Several plays later Burns spotted Yarborough running free on a post pattern and the strong-armed Burns rifled the ball to his WR in stride for a 37-yard TD with 4:37 to make it 14-0.

The Stone Bridge stands -- which, like the home side, were packed at 6 p.m. some 90 minutes prior to kickoff -- were in full throat and it only got louder as Stone Bridge pooched the kickoff and the ball bounced near the 25 yard line where Bulldog junior DB James Manning raced it and made a sliding recovering. That muff turned into three points as Smedley connected on a 32-yard field goal with 2:08 left in the half making it 17-0.

If you headed for the snack bar to get a jump on the halftime crowd, you missed two more touchdowns as Broad Run responded with Reitzel hitting Senior Dorian Jenkins running down the left sidelines for a 71- yard score on the first snap after the FG. That made it 17-7 Stone Bridge with 1:49 to go in the half.

The Bulldogs were determined to take the momentum and a bigger lead into the break and Goldring set it up with a nice 38-yard kickoff return to the SB 40. Broad Run did not help themselves out with a late hit flag on a Burns to Yarborough (5 for 110 yards) reception that moved the ball to the Broad Run with the extra 15 yards. The Spartans then jumped offside to put it at the 19.

Burns then hit senior Jake Kuzbel with a laser for a 19 yard score with 41 seconds left in the half. That made it 24-7 Stone Bridge at the break.

Of course, fans remembered that Broad Run led 24-0 in the previous meeting. Stone Bridge took care of business, first by keeping the ball for more than half of the third quarter on a long drive the ended on downs at the BR 29 and then with the defense stopping the Spartans on 4th-and-7 at their own 45 when a first-down pass was bobbled.

Stone Bridge couldn't move the ball but maintained field position with a punt that put BR on their own 21 with 44 seconds left in the third. Fitzgerald then came up with another big play, stepping in front of a Spartan WR for an interception and taking the pick about 20 yards to the BR 40.

That turnover came with less than a second left in the third quarter -- 0.5 to be exact -- and Stone Bridge needed just half a second to score as Burns hit Yarborough for a 40-yard TD that essentially ended Spartan comeback hopes, making it 31-7.

Stone Bridge showed its depth with the Bulldogs second offensive unit, with freshman Joe Thompson (son of head coach Mickey Thompson) in at quarterback, drove down for a score with just under five minutes to play. Broad Run Defeats Patriot 34-20

Joyful pandemonium reigned supreme at Broad Run High School Friday night, when Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III made an unannounced visit to support the school's "Pink'd" breast cancer awareness campaign, and seemingly spurred the Spartans to fourteen unanswered third quarter points and an important 34-20 win over Patriot.

Griffin coyly tweeted his possible plans to crash the Broad Run event earlier in the evening with the innocuous-sounding question "What quarter is the Pink'd game at broad run high school in?" For those in the twitosphere and beyond, the question may have seemed a bit random for a superstar rookie quarterback. But behind the scenes, a spirited social media campaign by Broad Run students to invite RGIII to their "Pink'd" event was the likely culprit for luring the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Month out of the house on the Friday before the 'Skins host the 4-0 Falcons.

But up until the game, the students had no idea whether their Twitter prayers would be answered. It wasn't until RGIII sent his tweet just before halftime that Metzfield realized the quarterback might actually come to the game. As school administrators and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies scrambled to ensure the arrival of the braided wunderkind would not turn the aforementioned joyful pandemonium into utter chaos, Metzfield and Daley grabbed an official "Pink'd" shirt to give Griffin upon his arrival.

Once recognized, chants of "R-G-three, R-G-three," soon filled the stadium.

As if scripted by a Hollywood producer bent on adding to the supernatural lore already surrounding Griffin, the Spartans Chuck Davis intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a game-changing touchdown just seconds after the Redskins quarterback hit the sidelines. The score sent the stadium into delirium, and gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish.

"I've never seen a non-football play excite a crowd like that," Broad Run girls varsity basketball coach Sean Gundry said about Griffin’s entrance. "But when Chuck Davis picked off that pass and ran it back, it just knocked the roof off the place."

Swingle Leads Battlefield Past Broad Run

The veteran poise of Battlefield senior quarterback Ryan Swingle was back on display after an uncharacteristically inaccurate performance in the team's win against Freedom-South Riding last week.

Friday night was an entirely different story as Swingle threw for 243 yards and a touchdown, completing 16-of-19 in Battlefield's 35-14 home win against Broad Run.

Battlefield head coach Mark Cox was impressed by how his signal caller controlled the game as Swingle also ran for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

“He bounced back after having a bad game,” said Cox. “He commanded the offense very well.”

Swingle took command of the game immediately. On the first play from scrimmage, he dropped back and lofted a perfect deep ball down the left sideline to wide receiver Nick Newman. The 6-5, 210 pound senior, easily won over the corner covering him and walked into the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown. Newman proved to be too much for Broad Run as he finished the game with 121 receiving yards.

Broad Run did find ways to get stops in the first half however, limiting Battlefield to the lone touchdown in the first quarter. Battlefield held a 7-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Broad Run running back tied the game on a long 80-yard sprint, in which he weaved his way behind blockers and into the end zone.

But Swingle responded on a 9-play, 80-yard drive that ended in a 9-yard touchdown run by Austin Thibodeaux. Swingle was a perfect 4-for-4 on the drive and found a new target to keep the defense off balanced. Running back Cameron Skaff caught two consecutive passes and gained 34 of his 56 receiving yards for the game. Coach Cox was thrilled by the effort of the seldom-used back.

“Tonight is the most we've used Cameron all year,” said Cox. “He had a lot of nice catches tonight and he did a good job of running the ball too.” In addition to his receiving numbers, Skaff ran the ball four times for 30 yards. The Battlefield running attack provided great balance to the offense. The team rushed for a combined 210 yards and four touchdowns.

After a 14-7 Battlefield at halftime, the Battlefield defense created good opportunities for the offense. They forced three straight Broad Run three-and-outs including two big stops on fourth-down. Newman was able to use his hands on the defensive side as he jumped an out route on 4th-and-6 and took the ball the other way for a nice return to set up the offense.

“We figured that they would keep throwing the outs because we do give up a lot of room on the outside ,” said Cox.

That interception set up a couple of good runs by Battlefield running back Joe Walker who scored two plays later from six yards out to put them on top 28-7. Battlefield would extend the lead in the fourth quarter as Swingle iced the game with a 49-yard scramble on 3rd-and-20. He was stopped just short of the goal line but punched it in two plays later to put his team up 35-14.
