A Guide to Notes and Citations
A GUIDE TO NOTES AND CITATIONS All items in the Somerville Collection deposited in the Bodleian Library are arranged by a shelf number and a filing code as follows: 'Dep' plus 'b.205' or 'c.NNN', where NNN = 351-378. Since the designation 'Dep.' is common to all items, it is omitted in the citations, which are thus made in this form: 'c.359,17,MSIF-3', followed by the identification of the item and its date, if any. The 'c.359' represents the shelf-mark. The '17' is a box number. 'MSIF' is a code identifying the nature of the contents of the box, e.g., inner family papers. The last number, '3', identifies the folder in which the item is located. Other abbreviations used are: MS - Mary Somerville WS - William Somerville TS - The Reverend Dr. Thomas Somerville WG - Woronzow Greig Martha S - Martha Charters Somerville Mary CS - Mary Charlotte Somerville OCPS - On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences (various editions, each identified by date) PR - Personal Recollections, from Early Life to Old Age, of Mary Somerville, with Selections from her Correspondence (Lon don, 1873) Lit. Gaz. - Literary Gazette (London) BE - Biblioteca Estense (Modena, Italy) BL - British Library (London) NLS - National Library of Scotland (Edinburgh) RS - Library of the Royal Society of London Names in brackets (e.g., [David Brewster]) are based on internal evidence or reputable attribution. 1941 Bibliography of East Lothian
BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EAST LOTHIAN EAST LOTHIAN ANTIQUARIAN AND FIELD NATURALISTS' SOCIETY 1936 BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EAST LOTHIAN COMPILED BY JAMES H. JAMIESON F.S.A.SCOT. ASSISTED BY ELEANOR HAWKINS WITH 'INTRODUCTION BY w. FORBES GRAY F.R.S.E., F.S.A.SCOT. EDINBURGH PRINTED FOR EAST LOTHIAN ANTIQUARIAN AND FIELD NATURALISTS' SOCIETY 1936 l ~ ~· .[., ..C) ~.. ! :!:"" :·,. ;; : ~.· "~· ; . ' ''' '· l PREFACE THIS work aims at registering all books and lesser publications relating .to East Lothian; furnishing bibliographical particulars, such as size, number of pages, date, name ·of publisher, etc. ; and providing brief descriptive notes,· indicating the. scope and distinctive features of each item. In endeavouring to bring together the varied.publications of three centuries, it is inevitable that some should escape· notice, but every effort has been made, by diligent search ~n likely quarters, to make the biblio graphy as complete as possible. The magazine and newspaper articles included in the survey are, needless to say; only a selection. Besides public:;~tions exclusively. concerned with East Lothian, this bibliography includes general works. -in which the county is prominent. The biographical section records not only the printed lives of men born in East Lothian but those of others who, while not natives,.have by long residence or some other interest become identified with the district. As the main object is fo illustrate the history of the county, books written by natives on subjects unconnected with East Lothian are omitted, though an exception has been made in the case of loca~ poets and a few others. Space has also been devoted to numerous publications by Haddingtonians which, although their subject-matter is extraneous, contain memoirs of the writers. -

C. Taylor, C.A., who had been its honorary treasurer for no less than thirty-two years. Appropriately enough it was at an Annual General Meeting in East Linton on 23rd May, 1936, that Mr Taylor became honorary treasurer and he has fulfilled the duties of the office ever since with the greatest dis tinction. Mr Taylor was a quiet, reserved man and a much respected one by those of long standing in the Society who knew him well. -
