Welcome to the February 2021 edition of Street Talk, updating you on street and other roadway and infrastructure projects in Garland.

Improving Traffic for Intersections

Yes, it’s part of living in a large urban area, but no one enjoys waiting through several traffic signal light changes during rush hour. The Transportation Department at the City of Garland is working toward reducing those delays. A 2015 study identified the most congested intersections in Garland, evaluating the effects of adding right turn lanes and left turn lanes to upgrade these intersections to provide acceptable capacity. Approximately 20 intersections were identified as candidates for bond-funded bottleneck improvement projects. DART provided additional funding.

2021 Project Intersections:

Broadway Boulevard at - add northbound right turn lane Forest Lane and Jupiter Road - add right turn lanes on northbound, eastbound and westbound approaches, and dual left turns on northbound approach Plano Road and Buckingham Road - add dual left turns to east-west approaches of Buckingham Road, and right turn lane to eastbound Buckingham Road and northbound Plano Road

Check out the list of intersections that will be constructed following these initial three: Garland Avenue and SH 190 Campbell Road and SH 190 Garland Avenue and Spring Creek/Apollo Road Arapaho Road and Shiloh Road Buckingham Road and Shiloh Road First Street and Miller Road and Shiloh Road Garland Avenue and Belt Line Road First Street and Lavon/Avenue B/Avenue D

Additionally, several intersections along state routes were also identified by the study. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is currently working on upgrading these intersections. These include Garland Avenue (SH 78) and Miller Road; Garland Avenue (SH 78) and Kingsley Road; Garland Avenue and Shiloh Road; and all of the interchanges along (I-635) that will be reconstructed and widened as part of the $1.6 billion I-635 East reconstruction project. Several locations will be addressed with roadway projects including Miller Road and Shiloh Road, and Lavon Drive (SH 78) and Naaman School Road.

All of these intersections are expected to be complete by the end of 2025. So when you are sitting in traffic, know that help is on the way! For more information, visit the City of Garland Department of Transportation.

Shiloh Road Project Update

If you drive Shiloh Road between Kingsley Road and I-635, you experience a great deal of construction activity. We have completed paving two southbound lanes and are detouring traffic to the new pavement with one lane each way. This will facilitate the early completion of utilities and paving on the east half of the road. During the next few months, we will focus on utility and storm drainage work, then prepare to pave the remainder of the road. The project should be substantially complete by mid-summer 2021.

Meanwhile, TxDOT has two projects (SH 78 intersection improvements and the I-635 improvements) impacting Shiloh Road. Watch for detours on the south end of Shiloh Road near I-635, and on Garland Road starting at the Shiloh Road intersection going south to I-635. Stay tuned for more updates!

635 East Project Continues

You probably noticed recent roadway closures along Interstates 30 and 635. All lanes of both eastbound and westbound Interstate 30 at Galloway Avenue were closed in January to perform a bridge demolition for the 635 East Project. The eastbound and westbound I-635 main lanes between Abrams Road and Forest Lane were closed earlier this month to facilitate in the partial bridge demolition of the Forest Lane and Abrams Road bridges along the 635 East Project.
