JOHN OF JERUSALEM OF RHODES AND OF MALTA – A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE ORDER OF MALTA INTRODUCTION: HOSPITALLERS Following thirteen years of excavation by the Israel Antiquities Authority, a thousand-year-old structure – once a hospital in Jerusalem – will be open to the public; part of it seems earmarked to serve as a restaurant. 1 In Syria, as the civil war rages on, reports and footage have been emerging of explosions in and around Crac des Chevaliers castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 2 During the interwar period (1923–1943), the Italian colonial authorities in the Dodecanese engaged in a wide-ranging series of projects to restore – and in some instances redesign – several buildings on Rhodes, in an attempt to recreate the late medieval/Renaissance lore of the island. 3 Between 2008 and 2013, the European Regional Development Fund provided the financial support necessary for Malta to undertake a large-scale restoration of several kilometres of fortifications, with the aim of not only preserving these structures but also enhancing Malta’s economic and social well- -being.4 Since 1999, the Sainte Fleur Pavilion in the Antananarivo University Hospital Centre in Madagascar has been helping mothers to give birth safely and assisting infants through care and research. 5 What binds together these seemingly disparate, geographically-scattered buildings, all with their stories of hope and despair? All of them – a hospital in Jerusalem, a castle in Syria, structures on Rhodes, fortifications on Malta, and yet another hospital, this time in Madagascar – attest to the constant (but evolving) mission of the Order of Malta “to Serve the Poor and Defend the Faith” over several centuries. -

Nicolò Isouard (1773-1818) is considered Malta’s national composer. After studies in France and Naples, he returned to his homeland, where from 1794 to 1798 he was an aspiring composer, and employee of the Order of Malta. In 1994 a collection of thirty-three autographs of hitherto unknown sacred music by Isouard appeared at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and I recognised the importance of these manuscripts. My intentions are to provide a précis on the Order, as the sovereign entity ruling Malta at the time, and the sacred music composed for them in their great Conventual Church in Valletta – now St John’s Co-Cathedral. The thesis will provide the background to Isouard’s early career and a complete edition and commentary of all of his sacred music, including additional works found during the research process, and a catalogue of his stage works. -

7 Mattia Preti - Architetto della Sacra Religione di Malta Denis De Lucca - University of Malta Note: This paper was presented at a scholarly conference organized by the International Institute for Baroque Studies at the University of Malta in association with the Soprintendenza PSAE del Lazio and the Comune di Valmontone. Entitled ‘Sotto la volta dell’aria: Mattia Preti. approfondimenti e ricerche.’ This conference was held at Palazzo Pamphilj in Valmontone outside Rome where, Monday 3rd November 2013, a distinguished international gathering of academics and restoration experts addressed various historical, artistic and technical aspects of Preti’s work, to commemorate the 400th centenary of the birth of the artist. The ‘volta dell’aria’ incorporated in the title of the conference manifesto refers to the restored ceiling fresco of the hall where the event took place, painted in the spring of 1661 by Mattia Preti (1613-1699) for Prince Camillo Francesco Maria Pamphilj (1622-1666) who was, at one time, the general of the Papal armies. The mountains and hills of Calabria have contributed several illustrious personalities who have collectively enriched the turbulent history of mankind. Among these one can mention eighteen Saints of the Catholic Church including Saint Francesco de Paola [1416- 1507]; six popes and, for good measure, one medieval antipope John XVI [945-1001]; King Roger II [1130-1154] and Prince Bohemond of Antioch [1058-1111]; the renegade Ottoman admiral and ruler of Tunis Uluy Ali Pasha, the ‘Occhiali’ who had participated in the great siege of Malta and the battle of Lepanto [1519-1587]; the famous philosophers 8 Denis De Lucca Bernardino Telesio [1509-1588] and Tommaso Campanella [1538- 1639]; the astronomer Aloisio Lilius [1510-1576]; Prince Gregorio Carafa who was a Grand Master of the Religion of Malta [1680- 1690] and, in the post-Baroque age, the Futurist painter Umberto Boccioni [1882-1916] and the world famous designer Gianni Versace [1946-1997]. -

6/23/2020 History of Malta under the Order of Saint John - Wikipedia History of Malta under the Order of Saint John Malta was ruled by the Order of Saint John as a vassal state of the Kingdom of Sicily from 1530 to 1798. The islands of Malta Malta and Gozo, as well as the city of Tripoli in modern Libya, were Order of Saint John of granted to the Order by Spanish Emperor Charles V in 1530, Jerusalem following the loss of Rhodes. The Ottoman Empire managed to Ordine di San Giovanni di capture Tripoli from the Order in 1551, but an attempt to take Gerusalemme (in Italian) Malta in 1565 failed. For the next two centuries, Malta went through a Golden Age, characterized by a flourishing of the arts, architecture, and an overall improvement in Maltese society.[2] In the mid-17th century, the Order was the de jure proprietor over some islands in the Caribbean, making it the smallest state to colonize the Americas.. In 1798, French forces under Napoleon invaded Malta and expelled the Order, resulting in the French occupation of Malta. The Maltese eventually rebelled against the French, and the islands became a British protectorate in 1800. Malta was to be returned to the Order by the Treaty of Amiens in 1802, but the British remained in control and the islands formally became a British colony by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. -

Distinguished Visitors / Page 59 A PROMISING FUTURE The President’s Note The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation can be described as a ‘sui generis’ organisation, bringing the Maltese Church and Government together via a joint and equal administrative arrangement. The Foundation model selected in 2001 can be deemed a success story based on the results achieved over the last seventeen years. As a Council member I had the opportunity to evaluate the works of my predecessors, leading to an understanding that the Maltese and international community will be indebted for posterity to the forefathers of the Foundation. This Presidency has aimed to lead St John’s to achieve better employment conditions for our employees, higher standards of customer care, improvements to the structural sustainability of the organisation, the opening up of further gateways for academic research & development, new bridges of collaboration with relevant entities and last but not least, ensuring that the organisation becomes more relevant and responsive to the signs of the times. 2QHRIWKHÀUVWSULRULWLHVZDVWROHDGWKH)RXQGDWLRQWREHFRPHDUROHPRGHOHPSOR\HU$ consultation and listening exercise, coupled with a professional assessment of the administrative structure was held in preparation for the envisaged organisational growth. Maltese fortifications erected between 1530 and 1798 are in some respects unique; they nevertheless are a representative example of contemporary European military architecture at its best. What is very interesting is the diversity of social and professional categories of military engineers, already committed by the Pope or by the big dynastic families of the time, called to work for the Hospitaller Order. Military architecture is also reflected in bastions, curtain walls and ravelins and by 1550 military engineering in Italy, as Count Valperga, seems to have become established as a specialist practice, the first branch of architecture to achieve recognition as an independent profession. Behind the walls, beyond the shores: the urbanization of Malta di Charles Dalli The story of Malta’s pre-modern urban development is inextricably linked to the island’s gradual transformation from a Sicilian dependency in the Crown of Aragon with a mainly rural population of about 20.000 around 1500, into an island principality with approximately half of its total population of about 100.000 in 1800 living in a heavily fortified and urbanized harbour area1. Governed by the Hospitaller Grand Masters (1530-1798), the Maltese islands evolved into a Catholic theocratic princi- pality enjoying de facto autonomy from the kingdom of Sicily2. Malta’s location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean world defined the course of its history. Following the British blockade of the French forces left by Napoleon to hold the islands in 1798, Malta became a British possession. The fortress colony served strategic British interests in the Mediterranean, and enjoyed periods of prosperity in times of war. The centripetal movement which had developed under the Order was further encouraged by the harbour-centred economy under British rule. The population, which doubled in the nineteenth century despite substantial migration, was heavily concentrated in the harbour area, where the early modern metropolitan port-town formed by Valletta and its suburb Floriana, together with the Three Cities of Birgu (Vittoriosa), Bormla (Cospicua) and Isla (Senglea) expanded especially after the opening of Suez in 1869 through suburban growth outside the lines of fortifications built by the Hospitallers. -

While its architectural aspects have withstood the test of time, other social aspects of the cult of Santiago in Malta are evident through the religious art in the Conventual Church of the Order in Valletta, today St John’s co-cathedral, but also through religious rituals held on the island during the stay of the knights. This reflected a local cult which shows hints of being present also before the arrival of the Hospitaller Order to the Maltese shores. Keywords: Military History. St James. Santiago de Compostela.
