Program Joshua Skidmore, National Sales & Marketing Manager at Fisher Space Pen Company. What is powerful enough to be at the intersection of NASA, the New York Museum of Modern Art, and Seinfeld? Something small enough to fit in your pocket yet big enough to generate thousands of customer fan letters over several decades. A product that works in virtually any condition and is still made by a family-owned company right here in Boulder City. Welcome to Fisher Space Pen. Fisher Space Pen Company has been located in nearby Boulder City since 1986. They were originally in Chicago and then moved to California before settling in Nevada. All 60+ employees are 'family' with the average length of emplyment being 30 years. The Fisher Space Pen was created by Austrian Friedrich Schchter and expanded by Erwin Rath. Paul C. Fisher invented the "thixotrop special ink". The pens were manufactured in Boulder City, Nevada. Paul C. Fisher first patented the AG7 "anti- gravity" pen in 1965. The pen is proudly made in America. The ballpoint is made from tungsten carbide and is precisely fitted in order to avoid leaks. A sliding float separates the ink from the pressurized gas. The thixotropic ink in the hermetically sealed and pressurized reservoir is able to write for three times longer than a standard ballpoint pen. The pen can write at altitudes up to 12,500 feet (3,800 m). The ink is forced out by compressed nitrogen at a pressure of nearly 35 psi (240 kPa). Operating temperatures range from ?30 to 250 F (?34 to 121 C). The pen can write without the help of gravity, at any angle and has an estimated shelf life of 100 years. The brass and zinc casing has a natural antimicrobial quality. The company has recently developed a First Responders Series pen collection. Profits from sales of these pens go to national and international organizations that benefit first responders. Quite an honor for a Southern Nevada business: Josh announced that Boulder City's Fisher Space Pen company is a 2021 Space Technology Hall of Fame inductee. The company's pen was initially developed for U.S. astronauts to use in spaceflight debuting aboard the Apollo Seven mission in 1968. The space pen is currently sold worldwide. The induction ceremony will be held in Colorado Springs from August 23-26. Josh had a pen for all in attendance. President Terry thanked Josh for the presentation and gifted him with a flag in our next Field of Honor. Adjournment Darcy Dougherty's number was pulled for the second week in a row!! She won $10 in the raffle. The pot was $306. Darcy then led the group in recitation of the Four-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do. President Terry Perkins adjourned the meeting at 8:15 a.m. District 5300 News District 5300 Receives Rotary International Presidential Citation "A first for District 5300 in over 100 years.' By PDG Luanne Arredondo April 30, 2021 In the Spring of each year, and after reviewing the accomplishments of all districts across the globe, Rotary International awards the District Rotary Citation. It is the highest honor and recognition a district can receive. We are pleased to announce that as a direct result of the work and effort of all clubs across District 5300, our District has received the Rotary Citation for the 2019-2020 Rotary year. In a letter received March 23, 2021, Immediate Past RI President, Mark Daniel Maloney stated: "As we reflect on an extraordinary year, I am so proud and inspired by how our clubs found innovative ways to connect with their members, their communities, and the world. During 2019-2020, under your leadership, the clubs in your district worked to increase their membership, contribute to The Rotary Foundation, serve their communities, participate in Rotary programs, improve their public image, and so much more. I am pleased to recognize this accomplishment by presenting you with the 2019-2020 District Citation digital certificate. Your district is one of 93 worldwide to receive this award, which honors Rotary districts in which at least half of the Rotary clubs earned the Rotary Citation." As a reminder, we had 100% of our clubs earn the Rotary Citation! Congratulations to all the clubs and all our members - it is your work that achieved this recognition. A first for District 5300 in over 100 years. (And, congratulations to PDG Luanne Arredondo, we thank her for her leadership.) 2021 Virtual District Conference May 22, 2021 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM The 2021 District 5300 District Conference is coming up! We will have five separate events in May and June to wrap up this most unusual Rotary Year.
