  • BBDO Picks the Winners!
BBDO Picks the Winners! Once a year the advertising agency of BBDO picks what they consider the breakout hits for the upcoming fall TV season. Based on their highly regarded opinion BBDO picks six probable winners (they call them swimmers) for the season: Roswell and Angel are listed as probable breakthrough hits on the WB. Joss Whedon, creator of the hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, combines supernatural adventure and dark humor in the next chapter of the Buffy saga, Angel. The centuries-old vampire (David Boreanaz), cursed with a conscience, has left the small town of Sunnydale and taken up residence in the City of Angels. Between pervasive evil and countless temptations lurking beneath the city’s glittery facade, Los Angeles proves to be the ideal address for a fallen vampire looking to save a few lost souls. With the help of Buffy’s Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), and a shadowy figure known as “The Whistler” (Glenn Quinn), Angel has one last chance to save his own soul by restoring hope to those impressionable young people locked in a losing battle with their own demons. It has been called the City of Dreams, and Angel has come to fight the nightmares. WB2 Tuesday 8-9pm following Buffy The Vampire Slayer Analogy: “Interview with the Vampire meets the WB” In the summer of 1947, residents of the tiny town of Roswell, New Mexico believed they witnessed the fiery crash of an alien spacecraft. The federal government maintains it never happened. Now, on the eve of the fifty-second anniversary, the town once again comes together to celebrate the historic event some call an ill- fated visit from the stars and others call a hoax.

  • Virtual Communities in the Buffyerse
Buffy, Angel, and the Creation of Virtual Communities By Mary Kirby Diaz Professor, Sociology-Anthropology Department Farmingdale State University of New York Abstract The Internet has provided a powerful medium for the creation of virtual communities. In the case of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel: the Series, the community is comprised of fans whose commonality is their love of the universe created by the producers, writers, cast and crew of these two television series. This paper will explore the current status of the major ongoing communities of Buffy and Angel fans, and the support that binds them into a “real” virtual community. “The Internet, you know... The bitch goddess that I love and worship and hate. You know, we found out we have a fan base on the Internet. They came together as a family on the Internet, a huge, goddamn deal. It's so important to everything the show has been and everything the show has done – I can't say enough about it.' (http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/425/425492p10.html: IGGN. Introduction [1]This is the first of a projected series of short sociological studies dealing with the general subject of the Buffyverse fandom. Subsequent project topics include (1) canonical and non-canonical love in the Buffyverse (Bangels, Spuffies, Spangels, etc.), (2) fanfiction (writers and readers), (3) unpopular canonical decisions, (4) a review of the relevant literature on fandom, (5) the delineation of character loyalty, (6) the fancon, (7) the Buffyverse as entrepreneur, and (8) predictions about the Buffista and Angelista fandom over the next five years.

  • Not Your Typical Knight: the Emerging On-Screen Defender
Not Your Typical Knight: The Emerging On-Screen Defender Sean Connery epitomizes the strong, handsome, aristocratic, ath- letic, valiant, and virtuous (almost picture-perfect) medieval knight of the movies whose nobility is shown in scene after scene. This hero is the gentle yet powerful leader who protects and helps those in need and, despite the great odds against him, wins because he represents justice. Over the last two decades or so, depictions of on-screen heroic medieval knights have shifted to include a variety of alternatives. These charac- terizations range from the aristocratic, almost pristine Lancelot of Excal- ibur (1981), to the disinherited Robin, his foreign friend Azeem, and, briefly, an armored Marian of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), the mercenary Lancelot of First Knight (1995), William Thatcher, the peas- ant squire and would-be knight of A Knight's Tale (2002), an ogre, fight- ing princess, and tallung donkey in the animated tale Shrek (2001), and finally the modern medieval "knights" Buffy, Giles, Xander, and Willow of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series (1997 through 2003). These changing portrayals of knights and heroes show us on-screen defenders who rarely fit the picture of traditional medieval knights and thus challenge our definitions of what constitutes a knight or hero. The on-screen traditional medieval hero derlves from heroes of medieval literature such as King Arthur, Su Gawain, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. The medieval heroes are set apart from their enemies by their brawny physiques, their devotions to God, king, and lady, and their fightlng abilities-which are used to promote justlce.

  • Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Better Days and Other Stories by Joss Whedon 'The Nevers' Is the Worst of Joss Whedon
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Better Days and Other Stories by Joss Whedon 'The Nevers' is the Worst of Joss Whedon. This overcrowded, faux-empowering HBO sci-fi series is a wholly original disappointment. Welcome to Up Next , a column that gives you the rundown on the latest TV. This week, Valerie Ettenhofer reviews The Nevers, the ambitious HBO series created by Joss Whedon. Pop culture lovers have spent a lot of time over the past few years discussing the dearth of original stories on our screens. Regurgitated content is bad. We want big! We want bold! We want a story that’s not a remake, reboot, prequel, sequel, or adaptation, damn it! The HBO series The Nevers , which was created by Joss Whedon before his exit as showrunner last November, is a flashy, wholly original failure that reminds us to be careful what we wish for. In some ways, small-screen stories don’t get much bigger and bolder than this one. The Nevers is a steampunk sci-fi Victorian ensemble period piece. In its spare time, it’s also a crime drama, an X-Men -like superhero saga, and — with all the subtlety of a hammer over the head — a story about women. Every few scenes, someone in The Nevers talks with importance about women as a collective: the strong, the downtrodden, the underestimated, the dangerous. Years before Whedon was accused of serious workplace misconduct by several actors, he made the ambitious and beloved woman-led series Buffy the Vampire Slayer . Though the series had its flaws, it was, at its best, an ass-kicking take on the evils of patriarchy.
