Marcó un antes y un después en su carrera. Tiene una melodía espectacular y se nota lo profundo que es el tema. Lo que me impresiona de la canción es la fuerza que tiene la voz de harry y lo desgarradora que suena cada vez que la canta. Le pone mucho sentimiento. También me gusta mucho la función que cumple la batería cuando llega el estribillo, en pocas palabras son 6 minutos increíbles. Respecto a la LETRA, hay varias maneras de interpretarla. Lo que yo interpreto es que habla del FIN como una forma metafórica de una ruptura o una separación en una relación. Interpreto que cuenta cómo dos personas deben separarse no porque quieran sino porque existe algo o alguien que no les permite estar juntos y por eso como que se despide, la canción dice: “me dijeron que el final está cerca” “podemos encontrarnos de nuevo en alguna parte” “recuerda que todo estará bien” “solo deja de llorar” “pasa el mejor momento de tu vida” . Yo interpreto que a medida que el asunto crece, más complicado se hace continuar con la relación, por lo que deben: alejarse entre ellos y rendirse (como el camino fácil) o seguir con todo y luchar por su felicidad (como el camino difícil ya que tal vez traiga consecuencias), esta opción la reflejan las siguientes partes: “alguna vez aprenderemos?” “porque siempre estamos atrapados y huyendo de las balas?”. Esta última frase es interesante ya que se pregunta porque huyen de la balas, y si pensamos uno puede huir de las balas como una forma más fácil de escapar o en lugar de huir uno puede poner el pecho, pero al poner el pecho a una bala te disparan… y viendo la canción desde otro lado también la letra podría estar hablando del final refiriéndose a la muerte. For an analyst, the cross-comparison of their respective commentaries and performances allows for rich interpretations of music and text that are unavailable from an exclusive focus on the score. Received April 2016 Introduction [1] This essay is based on a simple premise: performers’ written commentaries on music, in conjunction with their recorded interpretations, have much to contribute to an analysis of significant elements of musical structure. My analysis focuses on the song “Colloque sentimental” by Claude Debussy, published in 1904 as the third and final song of his second series of Fêtes galantes, set to the poetry of Paul Verlaine. The choice of “Colloque sentimental” and the interpretations selected for analysis are motivated largely by the existence of a corpus of French art songs for which performers have written about interpretation as well as documented through recordings. I contend that it is the rich potential of cross-comparison between written commentary and recorded interpretation that speaks to the analysis of musical structure.
