This book is dedicated to my mother, Dothia E. Kimberly Holbrook, who:se interest and encouragement were the reasons for my co1npiling this genealogy.

PREFACE

From the General Register of descendants of the Early Planters of Sherbon, Hollister and Med,vay, lVIassachusetts, by Reverend Abner Morse, A.M. "Name of Holbrook is ancient and distinguished. In the Eng lish world has long since attained wide range. It does not, how ever, occur in Dooms Book or Rheimin Foedera. Yet as early as the reign of Richard II one of the name was advanced to the order of Knighthood. "Others with equal claim to distinction must have attained to the same honor, for in books of Heraldry, I find the name dis tinguished by nine other coats of arms. Richard Holbrook knighted-coat of arms. Chev. between three Martlets." These badges have their use in an historical point of view as indicating the original and early seats of race. In the mother country they must have been men of character and consideration. Many Holbrooks were early in New England not descending from Thomas of Weymouth. I have succeeded in my own view in reducing them to descendants from a common father, whose name was probably John. They were probably from Weymouth, eight miles from Dor chester, England, from whence came the planters of our Dorches ter, Massachusetts. Not remote from these towns was a place, a small farm, long afterwards and perhaps still called Holbrook. (1855). In 1644 Dorchester, Massachusetts, was called Rehoboth, now called Milton.

THE HOLBROOK FAMILY

OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT

FIRST GENERATION 1. RICHARD HOLBROOK, probably the son of John, I find first mentioned as living in Dorchester, Mass., also brothers Thomas, b. about 1627, John, Daniel, Samuel, and Natha_.niel, and sister Mary. May 10, 1648, Richard with William and Daniel Holbrook of Dorchester, took freeman's oath at Springfield, Mass. Apr. 8, 1653, Richard with Robert Williams and Daniel Whithead pur chased the first lot of land from the Indians at Huntington, Long Island, near Oyster Bay. There he built the first house and there his son Abel was born, the first white child to be born at Hunting ton, Long Island. Feb. 6, 1657 or 58, he moved to Milford where he died 1670. His wife, Agnes, survived him a few years. He had five sons ~nd four daughters, John, Daniel, Israel, Abel, Pelitiah, Abigail, Mary, Hannah, and Patience. By his will I 2 2 find that John , Daniel2, and Abigail were married before his death as he states they had had their portions of his possessions. 2 He was a weaver by trade. I find no mention of No. 2, John , and No. 3, Daniel2, in Milford records. From Dorchester records I find that No. 2, John, b. ---, married Elizabeth Heminway Sept. 24, 1663. Had a son John, b. July 21, 1664. John was a tanner in Roxbury, M~ss., 1667. Living in Dorchester 1671, and d. at Roxbury, Dec. 25, 1678.

2 7. ABEL HoLBROOK , son of Richard and Agnes Holbrook, b. 1653, the first white child born in Huntington, Long Island. He came to settle in Derby, Conn., Apr. 1675. Was given a grant of land May 13, 1675, situated on Sentinel Hill on what was later known as the Swift farm near the Derby Reservoir. This house stood a little south of the Swift house, on a road long since abandoned as having too steep a grade for comfortable travel, although the distance was shorter and more direct to join the main thoroughfare to Milford. It joined the main road about opposite the gate to Mt. St. Peter's cemetery. His family was one of the first twenty-three to settle in Derby. In 1704 he was granted the privilege of keeping an ordinary or tavern, the first of its kind in Derby, which he kept until 1716. Mar. 20, 1756, a tract of land, one hundred acres on Great Hill, considered unde sirable as no one desired to settle upon it, was divided among the original proprietors, as the first settlers were called. This was where his grandson, John's children and grandchildren lived until a few years ago when the land was bought by the Derby Water Company. He attended Church in Milford, going back and forth by horseback until the Church at Derby was started in 1680. Abel Holbrook and Isaac Nichols were chosen the first of the Church. . He had a mill for grindjng corn. The millstone now stands on the grounds of the Derby Library as a sundial. He mar. Nov. 20, 1683, Hannah Merwin, b. THIRD GENERATION

2 1 11. JOHN HOLBROOKS, son of Abel (Richard ) and Hannah (Merwin) Holbrook, b. Oct. 19, 1699. "History of Derby" speaks of him as one of the reliable, successful men of his day. He lived in Uptown Derby, now Ansonia. His house is still in good condition on Elm Street near the old Episcopal Cemetery. Third Generation s

John and wife deeded from their home lot land for the First Episcopal Church and for the cemetery. The building of the Church and expense was borne by John and seven others. They started it in 1737; it was finished in 1746. April 23, 1752, he deeded two parcels of land to his son, John, Jr. One piece being part of Quaker Farms purchase on Rockhouse Hill, bought from Abraham Persons. He may have lived for a time on this land in the house where his son John afterwards lived. The house was built between 1740 and 1745 and recently was torn down by the Derby Water Company, when they bought all the land in its vicinity. Aug. 27, 1723, John mar. Abigail Gunn, b. 3 2 1 12. ABEL HoLBROOK , son of Abel (Richard ) and Hannah (Merwin) Holbrook, b. 1701. The first knowledge I have of Abel after his marriage in 1723, is that on Oct. 15, 1725, Abel and Daniel, his brother, made a choice of portions of land belonging to their father, for he owned land not only on Sentinel Hill, Uptown Derby, but also in Quaker Farms. Abel chose Quaker Farms. He was living in Quaker Farms, Mar. 1733, when the Oxford Church Society was agitated. He was received into the First Congregational Church of Southbury, May 10, 1734. He sold the last of his Derby land to Daniel, Sept. 27, 1737. In 1756 he lived in Bethlehem, Conn. Abe13, mar. Jan. 29, 1723, Tabitha Wooster, b. 1701, dau of Sylvester and Susannah Wooster. Abel d. 3 2 1 13. DANIEL HoLBROOK , son of Abel (Richard ) and Hannah (Merwin) Holbrook, b. 1704. At this time there were three Daniels living in Derby, father, son, and grandson. I can only 3 write what I am sure of concerning Daniel • "History of Water bury" says Daniel Holbrook of Derby became a land holder, also that a man by the name of Holbrook settled in the city about 1735. From Woodbridge I find Daniel Holbrook mar. Eunice Hyde and 3 lived in Woodbridge. Daniel Holbrook , lived in the old home upon Sentinel Hill as did his children and grandchildren. He was a blacksmith by trade. Daniel mar. Jan. 22, 1729, Eliz~beth Riggs, b. June 17, 1706, dau. of Captain John and Elizabeth (Tomlinson) Riggs. He d. 1780; Elizabeth d. --

FOURTH GENERATION

3 1 19. JoHN HoLBROOK4, son of John (Abel2, Richard ) and Abigail (Gunn) Holbrook, b. Aug. 12, 1726. He lived on Great Hill, a part of Derby at that time, in the house built by his father between 1740 and 45. During the Revolutionary War, he took an active part in the affairs of the town as shown by "History of Derby." He did not himself go to the front, but sent three of his sons. While at home he gave his aid in every way supporting the war vigorously until the end. Dec. 14, 1717, he was appointed, with others, by the Legislature, to examine any mines or mineral substance containing sulphur to be found within the colony and procure experienced workmen to separate the sulphur to find the practicability of manufacturing it for use in the war. He left the Episcopal Church, the society his father was so active in forming, at the beginning of the war, because the pastor, Reverend Mr. Mansfield, preached and talked submission to the King of England and the present state. He united with the old Church until 1781, when, having a sawmill of his own and plenty of timber, he built a Church on his own land on Great Hill at a place called "Meeting House Meadow." He was the first of this Church. He gave a pewter Communion set, which is still preserved although the Church records have been lost. He also gave a piece of land for a cemetery. He was reputed to own 1000 acres of land 8 The Holbrook Family of Derby, Conn. including most of the territory between the two rivers, the Housa tonic at upper Squantuck, to the Seymour road near the N auga tuck. Captain John was one of the town's most reliable and trustworthy men, with much firmness of purpose and a strict integrity. His judgment was reliable and the younger members of the family sought, prized, and relied upon his counsels. He was liberal in his charities but firm and unchangeable for the right as an anecdote will illustrate. When building the Church at Oxford he gave the committee liberty to cut any timber of his for its erection, excepting three trees, which they were strictly for bidden to touch. On looking around they found these trees to be just what they wanted and took them expecting to effect a reconciliation with him. They appointed a meeting. John wouldn't attend-"They" had for gotten their honor and he would have nothing to do with them. He or his father, John, owned a number of slaves, as I find recorded in the old Episcopal records the baptism of Jeffery 1747, Moll 1748, Beck 1750, Titus 1752, Dinah 1756, Zadoc 1759. All negro Servants of John Holbrook. He mar. (1st), Nov. 4, 1750, Esther Nichols of Newtown, b. 2 1 30. DANIEL HoLBROOK4, son of Daniel3 (Abel , Richard ) and Elizabeth (Riggs) Holbrook, b. Sept. 21, 1747. Daniel was an energetic, prosperous farmer, a man of wealth and extensive influ ence and a leading spirit in every good enterprise of the times. As agriculture was his principal business, he tried one improve ment after another, introducing the best seeds, having the most profitable crops, and the most valuable stock upon his own farm and thus inciting his neighbors to like improvement. When Plaster of Paris was first introduced as a fertilizer, he introduced it to his neighbors, by sowing a quantity upon one of his meadows 12 The Holbrook Faniily of Derby, Conn. which was visible for some distance in all directions. On another meadow similarly situated, he sowed a quantity in the form o~ the letters of his name. By the superior verdure and growth the words, Daniel Holbrook, could be read for miles in nearly all directions. His farm was named Happy Valley. He owned not only the valley but hundreds of acres around over the hills in three directions. His house stood a little southeast of the Swift Homestead. He was one of the first to invest in lands in New Connecticut afterwards called Western Reserve, in Ohio. One township in Lorain County was named Holbrook after him. He also owned land in Kirkland and one son and three daughters settled there on their inherited land. One of his farms was in Seymour and cared for by a slave named Richard. In time this farm became the property of his eldest son, Daniel, while again the youngest son (Josiah) occupied, for a time, the old homestead. He was a Colonel in the militia and very active during the Revo lutionary War. He raised a company among his fellow citizens, and meeting the British forces at East Haven, where they burned and destroyed all within reach, drove them back to their ships. He afterwards discarded the title of Colonel preferring to be known as Deacon. In 1781, when there was a call for more soldiers it was voted at a town meeting that certificates be given Captain Daniel Holbrook and others to free their slaves on condition that they enlist into the state regiment for the term of one year. Sept. 20, 1912. He was the largest mason contractor and builder in the town. It is safe to say that he had the contract for mason work on two thirds of the houses built during the last thirty years of his life. He ~lso built some of the largest brick buildings in Ansonia, Seymour, Derby, and Shelton. There was not a manufacturing plant in town that he hadn't built additions to, most of them larger th~ the original plants. Besides his work as a builder, he worked for the advancement of the West Side of Ansonia. Where fifteen years before his land did not seem worth the taxes paid on it, he graded and cut through Jackson and Holbrook Streets, laid out handsome building lots and through his energy greatly built up West Ansonia. He w~s always ready to respond to a worthy call of distress, as many a poor man could testify. Many a man owes his first start in life to him as he would always assist a m~n who was willing to help himself.
