If the bind- SHORT 24 - 26.5 ing is already mounted to the ski, the heel assembly can be removed by disengaging the locking latch of the STANDARD 27 - 31 Switchback from ski mode to tour mode and pivoting the toe-plate to the upward position. For re-assembly, align the heel assembly perpendicular to the toe-plate and pull down to attach assembly to toe- plate. A trick is to install the outside rod/hook first, squeeze the rods together, and install the inside rod/hook. The outside of the toe-plate is indicated by the small steel arrow on outsides of the left and right asymmetric toe-plates. Sizing: Correct adjustment of the heel lever provides an audible snap when the lever is engaged. For most boots this means when the lever is not engaged it will rest about a 1/4”/6mm back from the boot heel. To adjust the length of the heel piece spin the spring cartridges. Clockwise to tighten and counterclockwise to loosen. When the rods are at their maximum length a thread will appear. The threads should not be exposed!! When adjusted to their minimum length the rod will bottom-out on the back of the spring cartridge and begin pushing out the silver colored spring rod. At that point you can not make the length of the heel assembly any shorter. FIGURE 1 Checking the forward pressure: After you initially fit your boots it is necessary to check the forward pressure of the heelpiece. Release the heel lever from the boot. Note a scribed mark at the edge of the plastic collar on the spring cartridge. (SEE FIGURE 2) Now engage the heel lever and check the distance from the mark to the black collar. The distance should be at least 1/8”/4mm and no more than 1/4”/6mm to insure optimal flex and retention. (SEE FIGURE 3) The forward pressure may need to be readjusted after your initial ski runs. FIGURE 2 FIGURE 3 SWITCHBACK TELEMARK TOURING BINDINGS Binding Mounting Consult ski manufacturer for mounting position on all skis. Using the Voile Hardwire Mounting Jig or the enclosed paper template, make sure the 3-pin line mounting position is intersecting the diamond shape on the jig or template. Check drill bit depth before drilling especially for narrow profile skis. Always follow ski manufacturer guidelines. Check screw length to prevent “dimpling” the base, grind screws if necessary. Mount the Switchback riser to the ski using wood glue or epoxy in each screw hole, according to ski manufacturer guidelines. FIGURE 4 If you are mounting the Switchback to a K2 or Voile telemark ski with metal inserts, you must obtain part# 608-94 M5 x18mm screw pack from Voile. The screws provided with K2 telemark skis are too short to mount any Voile tele- mark bindings!! Dual LP Heel Pad Mounting First, install the climbing wires to the Dual LP. Make sure to use the longest wire in the front position. Install in the down position. Once installed, you can position the 2mm spacer under the Dual LP heel pad. Follow the instructions on the back of the paper template for heel pad mounting. Mount Dual LP heel pad so that the round contour of the back of the heel pad matches that of the back of the boot FIGURE 5 heel.(See Figure 4) Positioning the heel pad correctly will ensure the climbing wire to be centered under your boot heel and will also allow the heel lever assembly to be locked behind the heel pad for transport. (See Figure 5) Also make sure to use included washers with screws. Slide washer over screw and then install screws into ski to mount the Dual LP. Before tightening screws, it is possible to make small adjustments fore/aft on the heel pad with its unique slot design. (See Figure 6 & 7) Uphill Touring Function FIGURE 6 FIGURE 7 Rotate lever to the side marked TOUR to disengage the lock down latch on the Switchback. It is easiest to use your ski pole to rotate the lever from SKI to TOUR and back. Once you reach your destination and are ready to ski down simply rotate the lever back to side marked SKI. Also you do not need to have the binding toe- plate flat on the riser to lock back down for SKI mode. You can rotate lever to SKI and step down and you will be locked back in for downhill skiing.(See Figure 8& 9) Tech Tips: 1.) Voile recommends greasing the threads on the rods at the end of each season to prevent any corrosion of the threads and thus will maintain easy adjustment of the spring cartridges. For best results, use anti-seize grease. FIGURE 8 FIGURE 9 2.) Always make sure the Hardwire heel assembly is centered on the ski to maintain even pre-load of the spring cartridges. If the spring cartridges come out of adjust- ment, simply rotate clockwise to tighten and counter-clockwise to loosen and bring back to center. Before skiing, make sure you always have adequate load on spring cartridges to maximize performance.
