JUNIOR MISS ABRUZZESE QUEEN Olivia Mariella Simone

It would be an honor to represent the Abruzzese community as the 2017 Junior Miss Abruzzese Queen. My Italian –American Abruzzese heritage is very special and meaningful to me. My paternal grandparents were both born and raised in the town of in the province of L’Aquila. My nonna and nonno have shared many of the Secinarese traditions with me and my family throughout my life. I have had the privilege of visiting Secinaro and the surrounding areas twice in my life. The beautiful Appenine Mountains, the wonderful food and the warm and gentle people fill my memories of Abruzzo. I plan to spend more time there in the future. As the Junior Miss Abruzzese Queen, my goal will be to share my Abruzzese heri- tage with other young people. I will promote the region by sharing my love of Abruzzo with others who may not be famil- iar with this area of Italy so rich in beauty and history. I have tried to excel in academics while having a balance with extracurricular activities. I am currently a sophomore at Troy High School with a GPA of 3.7. I am a member of the Troy Colts Marching Band Color Guard and an active member of the Troy High Symphonic Band. I have studied flute privately for more than six years and have received division 1 ratings for Solo and Ensemble competitions for the last four years. I have been involved with two high school musicals including roles in “Shrek The Musical” in my freshman year and more recently in “Guys and Dolls”. I am currently on the Troy Colts Varsity Women’s Lacrosse Team. I enjoy athletics and the performing arts and hope to continue these activities throughout out high school. -ABRUZZO HERITAGE- ~MONTENERODOMO (CH). IUVANUM~

The archaeological site of Iuvanum is immersed in a beautiful setting with an impressive landscape. It is situated on a high plain at about 1,000 me- ters above sea level, between the Sangro valley and the Aventino valley with the Majella massif, known in time gone by as the “mother mountain”, as a backdrop. Study and excavation were carried out on the ruins at the beginning of the century and today Iuvanum has become an archaeologi- cal park, with a path to follow with explanatory panels and a museum in the progress of being set up. Its name probably from the Latin Iuvare – to be beneficial, can be connected with the healthy quality of the water from a spring, which still exists, com- ing out of the ground at the entrance of the site where is the fountain of Santa Maria del Palazzo. In the past shepherds with their flocks of sheep used to stop at this spring: there were many of them since the area was rich in pastures through which they could pass on their way to the main sheep tracks that led down to Apulia, during the seasonal migration. The archaeological remains tell of a glorious past, when Iuvanum was the economic and administrative fulcrum of the entire surrounding zone, inhabited in those day s the Samnite population of the Carricini. At the oldest, buildings date back to the end of the 3rd – 2nd centuries B. C. and are part of the sanctuary, with two temples situated on the summit of the hill with the acropolis, and the theatre sits on the side of the same hill. A mighty wall of large Majella Stone blocks en- circled the sanctuary, still partly visible, a sacred area dating back to the 4ath century, B. C. after the social war (90-87 B. C. ) the municipium was founded and so Iuvanum became the political and administrative stronghold of the Empire in this central area of Samnium. The majority of the buildings situated on the plateau date back to the Roman period: the forum, the tabernae, the basilica, and the private buildings. The monumental forum, the square, with its rectangular shape, preserve at the centre the remains of an inscription, of which are visible today only the holes in the slabs of paving that held the bronze letters, referring to the person who looked after the embellishing of the square in the Julian Claudian epoch. The square was surrounded by a portico with columns and honorary statues of which remain only some of the bases with inscriptions, one of which commemorates the empress Cornelia Salonina, who lived in the 3rd century A. D. . The municipium of Iuvanum carried on late into the Empire: in fact we know that its walls were renovated after the earthquake in 346 a. d. which struck the whole of Samnium. .
