Said states rights’ didn’t exist when he forced South Carolina back into the United States during the nullification crisis and then allowed Georgia to use states rights’ to force the Cherokee on the trail of tears after the Indian Removal Act. He was a very controversial President. He was a democratic president. He served from 1829-1837. 5 Leader of the Federalist Party who helped to write the Federalist Papers. He Alexander Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury. 6 Escaped slave who led other slaves to freedom on the underground railroad. Harriet Tubman 7 He smuggled the ideas for factories from Britain to the United States. Samuel Slater 8 Third president. He made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and sent Lewis Thomas Jefferson and Clark on their journey from 1804-1806. He was a leader of the original Republican Party. He was the main write of the Declaration of Independence. He was the first Secretary of State. He served from 1801- 1809. 9 He invented interchangeable parts which enabled factories to develop in the Eli Whitney North. His invention of the cotton gin changed life in the South and made growing cotton profitable. 10 This president was associated with Manifest Destiny. His campaign slogan James K. Polk was “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!” He was President from 1845-1849. 11 Women’s Rights leader who helped set up the Seneca Falls Convention in Susan B. Anthony 1848. She lived much of her life in upstate New York. 12 Escaped slave who published The North Star in Rochester New York. He Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist leader. 13 Fourth president. He was president during the War of 1812. Served from James Madison 1809-1817. 14 American leader from the colonial time period into the 1800’s. Second John Adams President of the United States. Famous lawyer from Massachusetts. Served from 1797-1801. .

Obituary for Eli Whitney, in Niles Weekly Register, 25 January 1825 The late Mr. Whitney. Died at his residence in New-Haven, on Saturday morning 8th inst. after a long and distressing illness, Eli Whitney, esq. aged 57 years. Mr. Whitney was one of the most distinguished men whom our country has produced, and his loss will be deeply felt and lamented throughout the nation. He was a native of Westborough, Mass. and was a graduate of Yale College, in 1792. His inventive genius rendered him one of the greatest benefactors of the age, and was the means of changing the whole course of industry in the southern section of the union. Previous to the invention of his cotton gin, in 1793 or 4, scarcely a pound of upland cotton was raised for exportation. In the short period of twelve years, the export amounted to about 12,000,000 dollars. Judge Johnson, of South Carolina, speaking of this invention, in 1807, says, “The whole interior of the southern states was languishing. and its inhabitants emigrating for want of some object to engage their attention and employ their industry, when the invention of this machine at once opened views to them which set the whole country in motion. From childhood to age, it has presented to us a lucrative employment. Individuals, who were depressed with poverty and sunk in idleness, have suddenly risen to wealth and respectability. Our debts have been paid, our capitals increased, and our lands trebled in value. Wikimedia Commons Synopsis: Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, a device that made the process of removing ﬁber from cotton seeds much easier. His device was copied widely even though he held its license and Whitney struggled to earn money for his invention. He later went on to pioneer “interchangeable parts” systems of production. Early Life Eli Whitney was born on December 8, 1765, in Westboro, Massachusetts. Though he grew up on a farm, he loved working with machines. As a young man during the Revolutionary War, he specialized at making nails from a machine he invented. He later crafted canes and ladies’ hatpins, recognizing opportunities when he saw them. Creation Of Cotton Gin Whitney graduated from Yale College in 1792. He considered becoming a lawyer. After graduation, Whitney was hired to be a tutor in South Carolina. On his way to his new job, he met Catherine Greene, the widow of a Revolutionary War general. Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter of South Carolina Chartered in 1926 Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate honor society. It is recognized across all academic disciplines as a mark of excellence and academic distinction. It is a symbol of integrity and scholarly achievement in the liberal arts and sciences Phi Beta Kappa is both the oldest and the most prestigious undergraduate honor society in the country. Only 10 percent of colleges in the United States have earned the right to have chapters, and just over 1 percent of all college students are elected each year. To be elected, a student must have more than a high grade point average. Chapter members review the academic records of the top 10 percent of the class to ensure that most credits are earned in the liberal arts and sciences, in a broad array of subjects, and at an advanced level. History of Phi Beta Kappa • Phi Beta Kappa are initial letters of Greek words meaning “Love of Wisdom–the Helmsman of Life” • Founded in 1776 at William and Mary College • Yale Chapter established in 1780, Harvard 1781, Dartmouth 1787 • Secrecy repealed in 1830 • Membership extended to women in 1875 • National Body established in 1883 • First African American member elected in 1877 • Alpha of South Carolina established at USC in 1926 • Today, there are 290 chapters and nearly 50 alumni associations across the country • In South Carolina, there are also chapters at Wofford, Clemson and Furman, and there is also the Lowcountry Association Why strive to be elected?
