They can be disappointing if one is more interested in the humbler buildings of the county, which may merit a sentence of two if their age was recognised at the time. The printed work is, however, the tip of the iceberg of the field surveyors’ reports. These are available for consultation at the National Monument Record’s archives at Swindon, and a number were photographed by David Lovelace as part of his own research projects. Alex Craven, an experienced researcher with the Gloucestershire VCH, took over as contributing editor in January and has now submitted a first draft to the committee. Anastasia has drafted several sections for the period after 1550, and Fergus is searching the sources for the medieval period.
