Emmy® and Golden Globe® Award nominee Patricia Richardson (“Home Improvement,” “The West Wing”), Katrina Law (“Spartacus: War of the Damned”) and Jordan Belfi ("Surrogates,” “Entourage”) star along with Susie Abromeit (“As the World Turns,” “The Haves and the Haves Nots”), Robert Curtis Brown (“Switched at Birth,” “Catch Me If You Can”), Bobby Campo (“Being Human”) and Tom Lenk (“Witches of East End,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”) in this unique, holiday romance, part of Hallmark Channel’s annual COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS, the #1 most treasured holiday destination by television viewers. Greta Kaine (Law) is always in search of juicy gossip. As a tabloid reporter at Pulse! Gossip in Los Angeles, it’s her job to expose the rich and famous for the entertainment of the magazine’s readers. So when word gets out that that one of the late Senator Tannehill’s two sons might be proposing marriage at the family’s Big Bear compound during Christmas, Greta and her chief rival Wes (Lenk) are challenged by their old-school editor to get the scoop. There’s incentive to be the first, too: The editorship of the magazine’s new online incarnation. When Greta’s assistant tells her that Wes has a head start to snowy Big Bear, Greta dashes to the mountain resort, without suitable clothing, in search of the Tannenhill estate. Things start to get tricky when she gets lost, backs her car into a tree and has no cell phone service. Freezing, she throws on the only clothing she has in the car: the wedding dress of her friend. After tumbling down a hill in search of help, bad luck turns into extremely good luck when elder son Ben Tannenhill (Belfi) comes to the aid of the “runaway bride.” Greta finds herself in the middle of what could be her best story yet when she poses as Ben’s girlfriend after his brother Jared (Campo) comes home with his conniving girlfriend Klaire (Abromeit) — Ben’s ex. Suddenly as a guest at the Tannehill estate, Greta discovers that the family, including matriarch Maggie Tannenhill (Richardson) and caretaker Peters (Brown), are more down-to- (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL/‘SNOW BRIDE’ – Lead Release – Page 2 earth than she ever gave them credit for. As she grows more attracted to Ben, she becomes increasingly guilt-ridden about her game of subterfuge and soon must decide how far will she go for the sake of a story. “Snow Bride” is produced by Johnson Production Group / Anderson Media Group.

  • Film Review: Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing: Whedon
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Film Review: Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing: Whedon, Branagh, and the Anxiety of Influence Jessica Maerz University of Arizona Tucson, Arizona, USA [email protected] Long before he was the internationally famous head of a major Hollywood superhero franchise, Joss Whedon was a beloved writer/director of cult TV shows, boasting a dedicated following of fanatics who parsed his every quirky turn of phrase. In the 1990s, when Whedon was building his fanbase with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Kenneth Branagh was at the height of his dominance as a mainstream interpreter of screen Shakespeare, thanks to the series of adaptations that he inaugurated with 1989’s Henry V. While Shakespeare plays like Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth have received multiple big-screen adaptations, Much Ado About Nothing has received only two: Kenneth Branagh’s own in 1993, and Joss Whedon’s, exactly twenty years later. This essay examines Whedon’s adaptation through the lens of Branagh’s, noting the many conceptual, stylistic, and industrial similarities that unite them—for despite Whedon’s insistence that Branagh’s Much Ado did not provide him with an adaptational roadmap, the films demonstrate striking similarities in context and content that can’t be simply explained by their shared source text. Indeed, Whedon takes pains to distance his own version of Much Ado from Branagh’s. Whedon refers to the 1993 film only occasionally in interviews (and generally has to be prompted by his interviewers to mention it at all); clearly he prefers to avoid the issue of comparison.

  • Fan-Tagonism Factions Institutions and Constitutuve Hegemonies of Fandom.Pdf
Fandom Harrington, C. Gray, Jonathan Sandvoss, Cornel Published by NYU Press For additional information about this book http://muse.jhu.edu/books/9780814743713 Access Provided by New York University at 02/14/13 2:22AM GMT 21 Fan-tagonism Factions, Institutions, and Constitutive Hegemonies of Fandom Derek Johnson Disharmony has long held a contradictory place in studies of fandom and cult television.1 While early works like Bacon-Smith’s Enterprising Women (1992) stressed unity within fan communities, Jenkins’s Textual Poachers acknowledged rifts among fans, producers, and even other fans, stressing the “passions that surround[ed] disputes” (1992: 130). However, Jenkins too deflected attention from conflict and dissent, emphasizing the consen- sual and positing that “disagreements occur within a shared frame of ref- erence, a common sense of the series’ generic placement and a tacit agreement about what questions are worth asking” (137). As Jenkins later explained, he “accented the positive” to distance fandom from perceptions of it as immature, deviant, and ultimately immaterial to academic study (Harrison 1996: 274). While tactically advantageous, this initial focus on consensus and unity underplayed the constitutive centrality of antago- nism and power to television fandom. Since then, Tulloch and Jenkins (1995) have shown that science fiction series attract heterogeneous fan groups with varying interests, diverse reading practices, and unequal positions of stature within the community. Baym (2000) and MacDonald (1998) have examined the internal hierar- chical structures that frequently make fandom a site of exclusion. Exter- nally, Gwenllian-Jones (2003) examines tensions between communities and institutions over unauthorized interactions with corporately owned intellectual properties.

He decided to use his break to make another movie. Changing gears from one of the biggest blockbusters of all time, Whedon called his friends from TV shows and films he had made in the past and put together an adaptation of one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved works, “Much Ado About Nothing.” The result is an undeniably fun diversion, a film that sometimes displays its “hey, let’s make a movie!” status but will be like catnip for fans of Whedon’s ensemble. As with most of his comedies, “Much Ado” is a web of mistaken identities and confused motivations. “Angel” stars Alexis Denisof & Amy Acker play Benedick & Beatrice, respectively, and Whedon immediately throws Shakespearian scholars for a loop by opening the film with the two of them in bed together.
