With its vast land and nature, Hokkaido is known to many tourists as a treasure trove of food, including seafood, agriculture, dairy products, wine, and sake. Of all the edible wonders this prefecture offers, there is one unique item that is not only popular among tourists, but is also a staple for locals: Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan is a lamb/mutton barbeque that uses uniquely-shaped skillets. One of the most common skillet shapes is that of a soldier’s helmet. The meat is grilled in the centre of the skillet, which rises in the middle like a mountain, and fresh local vegetables—common choices are bean sprouts, cabbage, onions, and pumpkin slices—are steamed on the rims with the juice that flows from the meat on top. Genghis Khan is often prepared in a cook-your-own style: diners grill the meat and vegetables by themselves, whether they are at home or in a restaurant. This makes Genghis Khan a great social opportunity as well, and even locals often go out to enjoy grilling up some Genghis Khan with glasses of local beer in hand.

Taking account of the latest elasmo- branch data and preliminary strontium isotope ratio, the age of the formation is confined to the late Late Eocene. The present and recent results show that the First Seto Inland Sea was actually composed of two sea areas that existed at different times: the Paleogene sea area is estimated to have been an open sea facing south to the Pacific Ocean, whereas that in the Miocene is thought to have been an em- bayment connected to the northwest to the Sea of Japan.

  • Geochemistry of River Waters Collected from the Okayama and Tottori Prefectures, Japan
HTT18-P07 Japan Geoscience Union Meeting 2018 Geochemistry of river waters collected from the Okayama and Tottori Prefectures, Japan *Katsuyuki Yamashita1, Takahiro Kamei1, Yuga Kishimoto1, Aya Ooi2, Ayaka Onishi2, Yoko Kurihara2, Masahiko Mori2, Hitoshi CHIBA1, Ki-Cheol Shin3, Takanori Nakano3,4 1. Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University, 2. Faculty of Science, Okayama University, 3. Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, 4. Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University A detailed geochemical and isotopic study of river waters from the Okayama and Tottori Prefectures, Japan, has been undertaken in order to evaluate the water-soil (rock) interaction, as well as human impact on the geochemical nature of the river water. A total of 646 samples were collected from 442 locations since 2011. The pH, EC, and water temperature were measured on site, and the major dissolved components, trace element (47 elements) concentrations, and O-H-S-Sr isotope ratios were measured in the laboratory. These data are being used to construct the geochemical maps of the river water of the two prefectures. In 2017, we focused on the investigation of the central to western Tottori Prefecture. The river waters in the area are generally characterized by high Rb and Cs concentrations, which likely reflect the presence of dacitic lava and volcanic sediments of the Daisen volcano. A similar pattern is also observed for Si and V concentrations. The oxygen isotope ratio displays a clear altitude effect. The d-excess value is high in the northern Okayama and Tottori Prefectures (>20), compared to the southern Okayama prefecture (5~15).

  • Miocene Shallow Marine Molluscs from the Hokutan Group in the Tajima Area, Hyôgo Prefecture, Southwest Japan
Bulletin of the Mizunami Fossil Museum, no. 37, p. 51–113, 9 pls., 2 fi gs., 1 table. © 2011, Mizunami Fossil Museum Miocene shallow marine molluscs from the Hokutan Group in the Tajima area, Hyôgo Prefecture, southwest Japan Takashi Matsubara Division of Natural History, Museum of Nature and Human Activities, Hyogo, 6 Yayoigaoka, Sanda 669-1546, Japan <[email protected]> Abstract A taxonomical study of molluscs from the Miocene Hokutan Group was carried out and their paleobiogeographic implication was discussed. A total of 100 species, including 45 species of Gastropoda, 54 species of Bivalvia, and one species of Scaphopoda, were discriminated. The fauna is referred to the Kadonosawa Fauna s.s. on the basis of the occurrences of the intertidal “Arcid-Potamid Fauna” and the upper sublittoral Dosinia-Anadara Assemblage. The upper sublittoral assemblages include Turritella (Turritella) kiiensis Yokoyama, Turritella (Hataiella) yoshidai Kotaka, T. (Kurosioia) neiensis Ida, Ostrea sunakozakaensis (Ogasawara), Cucullaea (Cucullaea) toyamaensis Tsuda, Siphonalia osawanoensis Tsuda, and Varicospira toyamaensis (Tsuda). These species are distributed as far north as the southernmost part of northeast Honshû at that time, and their geographic distributions are identical with the Miocene mangrove swamp element. The occurrences of these species strongly support the previous paleoclimatic reconstruction of the Japanese Islands during the latest Early–earliest Middle Miocene age on the basis of the intertidal molluscan assemblages, and show that central and southwest Honshû was under the warmer marine climate than in northeast Honshû and northwards. All the species including a new cardiid, Parvicardium? mikii sp. nov., are described and/or discussed taxonomically.

  • An Analysis on the Project Structure to Expand
AN ANALYSIS ON THE PROJECT STRUCTURE TO EXPAND RENEWABLE ENERGY -- A CASE STUDY OF THE MANIWA BIOMASS PROJECT IN JAPAN BY CHECKING FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF PPP (PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP) -- Yoshiki Ogawa, Toyo University, Phone +81-3-3945-4736, email: [email protected] Overview After the adoption of UN framework convention on climate changes (UNFCCC) in 1992, the expansion of renewable energies has been pursued to a great extent by planning various kinds of regional development projectss in Japan. In the past 25 years, we have experienced so many happenings and troubles related to the introduction and expansion of renewable energies through these projects. In December 2015, the Paris agreement on post Kyoto GHGs reduction was finally approved by many countries including various developing countries. In May 2016, Japanese Government has authorized the new target of GHGs reduction to achieve 26% reduction from the emission level in 2013 up to 2030. In addition, Japan need to intensify GHGs reduction measures, because she already comitted 50% (or 80%) reduction of GHGs in 2050 in the long-run. Thus, the expansion of renewable energies related to regional development projects will be one of important options to achieve GHGs reductions in Japan. In this paper, we made a case study on the regional development project in Maniwa city, Okayama Pref. of Japan. Because this project has continued during past 24 years with step by step progresses, we can definitely say this project is one of the successful examples in Japan. Methods First, we surveyed historical events on the regional development projects in Maniwa city which was focusing local biomass and wood resources.

  • Setonaikai National Park Was Established in 1934 As One of the First National Parks in Japan
An inland archipelago and year-round shimmering Setonaikai seascape where people and nature live as one 16 Setonaikai National Park was established in 1934 as one of the first national parks in Japan. The national park is surrounded National Park by the five straits of Kitan, Naruto, Kanmon, Hoyo and Akashi. The park extends over 11 prefectures and covers some 900,000 hectares including the sea area, making it the largest national park in the country. The main feature of the national park is its archipelagic landscape formed by countless islands of all sizes. The Seto Inland Sea can be broadly divided into four regions: from the east, the Awaji Island region, Bisan-seto region, Geiyo Islands region, and Suonada region. The national parkʼs landscape has a complex structure consisting of relatively large sea areas known as nada, “open sea” or wan, “bay” and narrow channels known as seto or kaikyo, which both translate as “strait”. The inland sea, which is separated from the open ocean, is characterized by signifi cant tidal variation and is known for its fast currents. Culture has fl ourished in the Seto Inland Sea region since ancient times and a major feature of the region is its open, friendly local environment that integrates human life as part of the landscape in the form of terraced fields, fishing towns waiting for favorable tides, and many other scenic points. Since ancient times, the region has prospered as a major domestic and international port for sea traffic, including kitamaebune cargo ships that sailed the Japan Sea during the Edo period (1603-1868), and when Korean delegations to Japan visited the region.
