With its vast land and nature, Hokkaido is known to many tourists as a treasure trove of food, including seafood, agriculture, dairy products, wine, and sake. Of all the edible wonders this prefecture offers, there is one unique item that is not only popular among tourists, but is also a staple for locals: Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan is a lamb/mutton barbeque that uses uniquely-shaped skillets. One of the most common skillet shapes is that of a soldier’s helmet. The meat is grilled in the centre of the skillet, which rises in the middle like a mountain, and fresh local vegetables—common choices are bean sprouts, cabbage, onions, and pumpkin slices—are steamed on the rims with the juice that flows from the meat on top. Genghis Khan is often prepared in a cook-your-own style: diners grill the meat and vegetables by themselves, whether they are at home or in a restaurant. This makes Genghis Khan a great social opportunity as well, and even locals often go out to enjoy grilling up some Genghis Khan with glasses of local beer in hand. -

The northernmost of the main islands, Hokkaido, is Japan’s last frontier. It is a natural wonderland of mountain ranges, deep caldera lakes, active volcanoes, numerous thermally-heated mineral springs, and virgin forests. The attitudes of the inhabitants are akin to those of the pioneers of the American West, but still unmistakably Japanese. Tohoku is the northern part of Honshu, the main island of the Japanese archipelago. It is known as a remote and scenic region, and for its numerous traditional onsens, lakes, mountains, high quality rice, and welcoming people. You will enjoy exploring Tohoku’s rich cultural heritage and history, and the beautiful scenery that it has to offer. Destinations Tokyo, Sapporo, Otaru, Noboribetsu Onsen, Hakodate, Aomori, Hiraizumi, Sendai, Matsushima, Yamadera, Aizu-Wakamatsu, Ouchijuku, Kinugawa Onsen, Nikko Tour Details Among the Japanese, Hokkaido has become synonymous with sensational food, stunning scenery, and some of the best onsens in Japan. You will enjoy Sapporo, Hokkaido’s largest city and host to the 1972 Winter Olympics, with its many fine restaurants. You will have the opportunity to explore the morning market of Hakodate where you can try the local specialties of crab, sea urchin, or squid prepared for you. Here you can learn about Hokkaido’s original inhabitants, the Ainu, whose culture almost disappeared until recent efforts of restoration. Tohoku may share the main island of Honshu, but it is a world apart from the crowded and busy south. -

Geochemistry of River Waters Collected from the Okayama and Tottori Prefectures, Japan
HTT18-P07 Japan Geoscience Union Meeting 2018 Geochemistry of river waters collected from the Okayama and Tottori Prefectures, Japan *Katsuyuki Yamashita1, Takahiro Kamei1, Yuga Kishimoto1, Aya Ooi2, Ayaka Onishi2, Yoko Kurihara2, Masahiko Mori2, Hitoshi CHIBA1, Ki-Cheol Shin3, Takanori Nakano3,4 1. Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University, 2. Faculty of Science, Okayama University, 3. Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, 4. Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University A detailed geochemical and isotopic study of river waters from the Okayama and Tottori Prefectures, Japan, has been undertaken in order to evaluate the water-soil (rock) interaction, as well as human impact on the geochemical nature of the river water. A total of 646 samples were collected from 442 locations since 2011. The pH, EC, and water temperature were measured on site, and the major dissolved components, trace element (47 elements) concentrations, and O-H-S-Sr isotope ratios were measured in the laboratory. These data are being used to construct the geochemical maps of the river water of the two prefectures. In 2017, we focused on the investigation of the central to western Tottori Prefecture. The river waters in the area are generally characterized by high Rb and Cs concentrations, which likely reflect the presence of dacitic lava and volcanic sediments of the Daisen volcano. A similar pattern is also observed for Si and V concentrations. The oxygen isotope ratio displays a clear altitude effect. The d-excess value is high in the northern Okayama and Tottori Prefectures (>20), compared to the southern Okayama prefecture (5~15). -

Outline O F the Carboniferous Trilobites in Japan*'
104 Proc. Japan Acad., 55, Ser. B (1979) [Vol. 55(B), 21. Outline of the Carboniferous Trilobites in Japan*' By Teiichi KOBAYASHI, M. J. A., and Takashi HAMADA University of Tokyo (Communicated March 12, 1979) In the Carboniferous fauna of Japan trilobites have been a small group represented by only five species (Sugiyama, 1944; Okubo,1951; Endo and Matsumoto, 1912), but recently it was considerably am- plified with fresh materials from old and new localities. At present they attain as much as almost six times in specific number, beside some indeterminable forms. These trilobites are classifiable into two major groups which represent the Kitakami trilobite facies (Kt) in non-calcareous rocks in Northeast Japan and the Akiyoshi trilobite facies (Ak) in lime- stones in the Inner Zone of Southwest Japan. None has so far been discovered from the Outer Zone. The trilobites of these two biof acies belong to sixteen genera in two families and seven subfamilies in the Proetidae as follows : I. Proetinae 1. Proetinae: Pudoproetus (Ak), Conophillipsia (Kt) 2. Cyrtosymbolinae: Archaegonus (Angustibole) (Ak), Waribole (Ak) Phillibole (Kt), Carbonocoryphe (Ak) 3. Phillipsiinae: Phillipsia (Kt) 4. Linguaphillipsiinae: Linguaphillipsia (Kt, Ak), Palaeophillipsia (Kt) 5. Cummingellinae: Cummingella (Ak) 6. Griflithidinae: Grifithidella (Ak), Thigriffides (Ak), Paragrif thides (Ak), Humilogriffithides (Ak) 7. Ditomopyginae: Paladin (Paladin, Weberides) (Kt) II. Brachymetopidae: Brachymetopus (Brachymetopus, Brachymetopella) (Ak) As listed above, the Phillipsinae is restricted to the Kitakami facies and so are the Cummingellinae, Grifithidinae and Brachymeto- pidae to the Akiyoshi facies, but the Proetinae, Cyrtosymbolinae and Linguaphillipsiinae are contained in the two facies. In the generic level, however, there is none common between the two facies. -
