Dear Friends of Hofstra Athletics, On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, I would like to thank you for your support of the Hofstra Pride during this past year. We appreciate the commitment you continue to make to the Hofstra University Department of Athletics. We are extremely proud of the outstanding accomplishments of our athletic teams and student- athletes – in the competitive venues, in the classroom and in the community – and hope that you feel the same sense of pride. Hofstra’s 316 student-athletes shined in the classroom once again this past academic year, combining to post a record 3.29 grade point average in 2016-17 including a single semester best 3.30 GPA in the fall 2016 semester. Hofstra student-athletes have now compiled 10 consecutive semesters with a grade point average of more than 3.0. During the fall semester a department record 126 student-athletes earned Provost’s or Dean’s List accolades, while 118 earned that distinction during the spring semester. The Pride also boasted two Academic All-Americans as Hannah Klemm (volleyball) and Stella Schoen (field hockey) earned this prestigious honor. For Stella, it was her second consecutive Academic All-America award. In the NCAA Academic Progress Rate report, 10 Pride programs (men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball) recorded a perfect 1,000 single year score. It marked the third straight year that Hofstra had at least 10 teams with perfect single year APR scores. In the multi-year APR, covering the 2012-13 through the 2015-16 academic years, men’s golf, women’s cross country and women’s tennis all had multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent in each of their respective sports and received NCAA APR Public Recognition Awards for their efforts. The academic success of our student-athletes continues to be a tremendous source of pride on our campus. We are equally proud of the commitment our student-athletes have shown in helping others, as the Pride took part in 55 community service projects and totaled nearly 3,000 hours of service. Throughout the 2016-17 year, Hofstra Athletics partnered with nearly 50 groups and organizations as part of its community service outreach. Our teams and student-athletes represented Hofstra well in competition, highlighted by the men’s soccer team winning the regular season Colonial Athletic Association championship for a second consecutive season while the men’s lacrosse team started the season with 10 consecutive wins and was ranked as high as #2 in the country. Men’s Soccer Coach Richard Nuttall was named the CAA Coach of the Year for a second consecutive season, while Harri Hawkins was the CAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Year. Josh Byrne of the men’s lacrosse squad was the CAA Player of the Year, while four freshmen – Luke Brown (men’s soccer), Laura Masciullo (volleyball), Alyssa Parrella (women’s lacrosse) and Ryan Tierney (men’s lacrosse) – earned CAA Rookie of the Year accolades. Numerous other student-athletes earned individual awards for their performances on the field including All- America, all-region and All-CAA honors. The future continues to be very bright for the Pride in the competitive venues. Once again, our University did a tremendous job in hosting the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals at James M. Shuart Stadium this past May with 10,117 fans in attendance at the doubleheader. The event has always been an exciting day for lacrosse fans and an outstanding opportunity to showcase the great facilities we have to offer. We are very excited that the NCAA has awarded the quarterfinals for each of the next five years to Hofstra University. The Hofstra Athletics Pride Club also had a great year, and we are pleased to have former Hofstra Lacrosse standout and a parent of a current Hofstra student-athlete, Tony Perettine, as our new president. We look forward to the leadership that Tony will provide and know he will do a tremendous job representing our outstanding alumni and donors as the Pride Club continues to assist in increasing fundraising and membership so we may better serve our student-athletes and coaches. I extend my thanks and gratitude to Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz for his continued support of the Department of Athletics, as well as his passionate leadership of our University. Due to the efforts of President Rabinowitz, our campus administration, faculty, staff, current students, alumni, donors and so many dedicated members of the greater University community, we have been able to provide an

outstanding academic and athletic experience for our student-athletes. I am proud to serve and lead the Hofstra Athletic Program and our wonderful student-athletes, coaches and staff. Once again, thank you again for your unwavering support of Hofstra Athletics as we all look forward to continued success.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Hathaway Vice President and Director of Athletics Hofstra University 3

HOFSTRA ATHLETICS DIGITAL From Soccer REMEDY VENTURE Pitch to CHALLENGE Business Pitch: Hofstra Men’s Soccer Players Win Digital Remedy Venture Challenge

For soccer players Henry Crayton, Rory Murphy and Lerthon Theuma, it’s all about the pitch.

The trio, members of the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Championship team, are $30,000 richer after taking top honors in the 2017 Hofstra Digital Remedy Venture Challenge and the New York state Regional Business Plan competition for their business idea, CountryBox. The budding entrepreneurs won first place and $20,000 in seed money in the Hofstra Digital Remedy contest, and $10,000 for placing in the top three of the regional competition.

Crayton, Murphy and Theuma are all international students who developed the idea for CountryBox based on their own experiences as expats longing for an affordable way 22 to get their favorite snacks and goods from home. They conceived their plan for the CountryBox website on a men’s soccer road trip in Fall 2016. HOFSTRA ATHLETICS DIGITAL REMEDY VENTURE CHALLENGE

“We were on an away trip, and we were discussing foods that That’s the philosophy of Hofstra Men’s Soccer Coach Richard we were missing from our home country, and we were like, Nuttall, who emphasizes the importance of success off the field ‘Let’s look them up,’” said Theuma, who is from Malta. “We to his student-athletes. used Amazon and couldn’t find them really, so we thought, ‘Why not start our own idea?’” “I’ve always said as a head coach, I measure myself just as much on what they do when they graduate from here and Later in the school year, Murphy, originally from England, how they are as people on campus as I do in wins and losses,” notified the group that a business competition was coming up. After tossing around other ideas, Crayton, a New Zealander, Henry Crayton circled back to CountryBox. Deciding on a whim to go forward with the competition, the group gave their first presentation with just a few days’ preparation.

“We were kind of just doing it for a bit of fun because we thought we might have an off chance of winning some money, and then when it got such good reception, we thought, ‘Why don’t we really put a lot of time and effort into this and try to make it something big?’” said Murphy.

The Venture Challenge is run by the Center for Entrepreneurship and sponsored by Hofstra trustee and alumnus Mike Seiman, the founder and CEO of Digital Remedy, formerly known as CPXi.

Lerthon Theuma

Nuttall said. “I’m incredibly proud not only of what they’ve achieved, but how they’ve achieved it. It’s not a shock to me… because I’ve spent a lot of time with them, and they’re focused, goal-driven young men.”

The trio graduated from the Frank G. Zarb School of Business in May. Crayton is heading to Florida to pursue his master’s degree in business administration, Theuma is looking for a full- time job in Manhattan, and Murphy has accepted a position at Nature’s Bounty Co. on Long Island.

In the meantime, they will continue to pursue CountryBox, and are in talks with potential investors. “We’re still in discussion,” Theuma said. “There’s a couple people we need to speak to that showed interest throughout the competitions, so time will tell.” “This was our strongest competition yet,” said Mark Lesko, vice president for economic development and executive dean of the Center for Entrepreneurship.“The commitment of the Rory Murphy students, and the quality of their ideas and presentations were really extraordinary.”

To prepare, the CountryBox group built the website, consulted fellow international students and talked with vendors. Then, they pitched their idea to the tough panel of judges at the finals of the Venture Challenge – a nerve-wracking task even for seasoned Division I athletes.

“Right before a pitch, it’s a different rush,” said Theuma. “It’s not like you’re going on the field and once you’re on the ball, you’re calm. It’s something brand new to us that we never really did before.”

But as athletes, their competitive nature helped fuel their desire for success in the business world. “We all want to win, so we all probably put in the extra effort that we needed to just based on being athletes and kind of being used to that,” said Crayton. “[In soccer], you learn the value of hard work. You 23 work hard, you get your reward. There’s no shortcuts to it.”
