ABOUT THE FESTIVAL (Legend/History/Myth)

This is one of the ancient temples in Kollam. Devi here is Goddess Bhadrakali in balika bhavam(small girl). Ten days festival is celebrated with all scientific rituals during April annually. This festival is done annually to increase the chaithanya (the vigor) of the deity.

The festival which starts from Malayalam month Medam Flag Hoisting lasts till Medam 10.There will be a flag hoisting ceremony Sreebhoothabali marking the beginning of the festival. The shrine is Chamayavilakku Cultural Programs and traditionally decorated with plantain, coconut leaves, Folk Arts flowers, leaves, traditional lamps and lights. Various cultural Spiritual Discourses Seminars activities takes place during the festival time, and traditional Percussion Music performing arts, music and dance are staged during the Musical Concerts Kadhakali period. Ottamthullal is a major event in the temple during Mohiniyattam this period. Kettukazhcha(floats) will be there on the final Ottanthullal Drama day of the festival. Caparisoned elephants, melam, fireworks Bale and sheevali are part of the festival. There will be lot of Chakyarkoothu Sopanasangeetham cultural events and religious discourses. On the final day Annadanam Arattu(holy bath) takes place, The utsava murti of the deity Arattu is taken out of the shrine for ritual bathing on the final day.
