From horizon to horizon (eg., East-to- West, North-to-South) through the zenith (the point directly above you), the sky is divided into 180 degrees. Your hand can be used to estimate angular distances. Check for yourself - compare with measured distances for the Big Dipper (right). Right Ascension And Declination The entire sky, divided into two parts. Right ascension (blue) begins at the vernal equinox (at far right, at the intersection of the ecliptic (red) and the equator (green)) and increases eastward (towards the left). The lines of right ascension (blue) from pole to pole divide the sky into 24h, each equivalent to 15°. Declination (green) begins at the equator (green) and is positive northward (towards the top) and negative southward (towards the bottom). The lines of declination (green) divide the sky into small circles, here 15° apart. For orientation, the yellow box at left contains the tea pot of Capricorn. Stellar Constellation Kit (Pk/12) PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING YOUR KIT CONTAINS: • Tubes FIGURE A FIGURE B • Constellation Template • Black Paper • Paper Fasteners • Glue • Paint • Brushes • Cardstock Pieces YOU WILL NEED: • Straight Pins or Thumbtacks AGE GROUP: 8 and up PROJECT TIME: 45 minutes INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Select one egg shaped card board ring and one tube. Apply glue to the end of the tube. Glue the ring to the end of the tube. See Fig A. 2. Using your imagination, decorate your tube with paint. 3. On the circular chipboard frame, place a small amount of glue and attach the black paper to the circle. See Fig B. 4. Place the constellation template on the black disc. With a pin, poke through each white dot marked on the template. Label each constellation as you go, on ® the frame of the disc. 5.
