A Surgical Fugger Hospital in Augsburg

THE “SCHNEIDHAUS”, A SURGICAL FUGGER HOSPITAL IN AUGSBURG Annemarie Kinzelbach Deutsches Medizinhistorisches Museum Ingolstadt; Technical University Munich [email protected] ABSTRACT The Schneidhaus was a hospital foundation of the counts Fugger specialized in surgery of hernia and bladder-stones and characterized by a number of apparently unique features, which allow to trace aspects of how the counts Fugger represented themselves during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. An allusion to charity covers just one functional aspect. During major confessional crises the hospital, including its localization(s) in Augsburg, also served to represent the Fugger as exemplary Catholic citizens. Moreover, evasive traces of several buildings designated as Schneidhaus and singular hints at their architecture point to additional functions: the hospital also was a means to support the efforts of the Counts Fugger to establish themselves among the German (and European) noblemen by displaying model behavior as rulers and humanists. A recently acquired illustrated manuscript in the German Museum of the History of Medicine in Ingolstadt was a further tool to assist these functions. The manuscript transferred practices inside the Schneidhaus into transportable evidence, thus allowing the counts Fugger to display, wherever necessary, their practice as models for Catholic charitable citizens and rulers of territories in combination with hints -
Collected Martial Knowledge in the Thun-Hohenstein Album
Acta Periodica Duellatorum volume 6, issue 1 (2018) – DOI 10.2478/apd-2018-001 Visualizing the Fight Book Tradition: Collected Martial Knowledge in the Thun-Hohenstein Album Chassica Kirchhoff The University of Kansas Abstract: The Thun-Hohenstein album, long-known as the Thun’sche Skizzenbuch, is a bound collection of 112 drawings that visualize armoured figures at rest and in combat, as well as empty armours arrayed in pieces. The collection gathers drawings that span the period from the 1470s to around 1590. While most of the images were executed in Augsburg during the 1540s, the album’s three oldest drawings date to the late-fifteenth century. Two of these works, which form a codicological interlude between the first and second quires, find parallels in the illustrations of contemporaneous martial treatises. This article traces the pictorial lineages of these atextual images through comparative analyses of fight books produced in the German-speaking lands, and considers how the representational strategies deployed in martial treatises inflected the ways that book painters and their audiences visualized the armoured body. This exploration situates a manuscript from which one of the drawings derives, Peter Falkner’s Art of Knightly Defense, now in Vienna, within the Augsburg book painters’ workshops that would later give rise to the Thun album. Finally, this study considers how the transmission and representation of martial knowledge in late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Augsburg contributed to the later depictions of armoured bodies that populate the album. Renaissance Dress, Cultures of Making and the Period Eye Ulinka Rublack, Cambridge University “In the visual properties of a work of art one can identify cultural visual skills.” Michael Baxandall1 I This article asks how we can accommodate the extraordinary importance of clothes to create culture and a visual public in Renaissance symbolic practices. Both everyday dress and imaging practices were humanly crafted complexes of form – and this now serves as definition of art. Many people in this period composed a careful three-dimensional image of themselves through dress, and at far greater expense than any pictorial image. No printed guide for tailoring existed until Juan de Alcega published his Tailor´s Pattern Book in 1589 in Spain. This, as much as the manuscripts which preceded or followed it, lacked detailed instructions and followed basic geometrical shapes. Every pattern taken from a person or a book to create an actual garment therefore differed. It resulted from a creative process of embodied cognition as the process of tailoring turned on an intuitive sense of bodily proportions and how dress shaped them. It was deeply sculptural and interlinked cognitive as much as somatic awareness of how clothes and accessories would come alive on the body of a wearer through their properties, such as weight or color, and through movement.2 1 University Library Cambridge, Baxandall Papers, Typescript 2002 with an intended foreword for a new edition of Baxandall´s book on the German Limewood Sculptors, p.4.
