Interbank Cheque Clearing, April 2013 In April 2013, the volume and value of interbank cheque clearing throughout the country increased from the same period last year. Also, the value of total returned as a proportion to total cheques cleared grew from last month.

The number of interbank cheques cleared across the country in April 2013 totaled 6.5 million items, with a value of 3.4 trillion baht. The share of provincial cheques decreased to 8.5% as cheques in Suphanburi, , and Khon Kaen provinces were cleared through Imaged Cheque Clearing and Archive System (ICAS) totaling 114,540 items, worth 41.95 billion baht. The volume and value increased 23.6% and 31.4% from last month, respectively. 1. Interbank Cheque Clearing in Bangkok and Metropolitan Areas (Table 2) The number of cheques cleared in Bangkok and Metropolitan areas via ICAS totaled 4,688,746 items worth 3,071.9 billion baht. The volume and value grew 7.4% and 16.4% from the same period last year, respectively. The number of total returned cheques and returned cheques with insufficient funds stood at 62,359 and 40,223 items with a value of 14.6 and 6.1 billion baht, respectively. The proportion of total returned cheques and returned cheques with insufficient funds to total cheques cleared fell from 0.50% and 0.22% last month to 0.48% and 0.20%, respectively. Total settlement value of same-day cheque clearing was 31.2 billion baht per day. Five participants with the largest share in net debtor and net creditor positions accounted for 80.3% and 58.2% of total settlement value, respectively. 2. Intra-Provincial Cheque Clearing throughout the country (Table 3) The number of intra-provincial cheques cleared nationwide totaled 1,143,926 items, with a value of 291.3 billion baht, decreasing 0.4% from the same period last year. The number of total returned cheques and returned cheques with insufficient funds stood at 13,412 and 8,364 items with a value of 3.4 and 1.2 billion baht, respectively. The proportion, in terms of value, of total returned cheques and returned cheques with insufficient funds to total cheques cleared rose from 0.89% and 1.14% last month to 1.17% and 0.42%, respectively. The central region’s share, in terms of value, of intra-provincial cheque clearing remained the largest at 33.8%. The northeastern, southern, and northern regions had shares of 23.4%, 22.1%, and 20.6% of the total value, respectively. Provinces with highest values of cheque clearing in their respective regions included Chon Buri (36.6%), Nakon Ratchasrima (20.1%), (29.9%), and (33.9%). 3. Inter-Provincial Cheque Clearing (B/C-3D) (Table 4) The number of inter-provincial cheque clearing totaled 670,740 items worth 47.7 billion baht, rising 18.9% from the same period last year. The number of total returned cheques and returned cheques with insufficient funds totaled 21,671 and 17,982 items, having values of 1.8 and 1.4 billion baht, respectively. The proportion, in terms of value, of total returned cheques to total cheques cleared increased from 3.38% last month to 3.78% while the proportion of returned cheques with insufficient funds to total cheques cleared rose from 2.64% to 2.96%. In regard to the share of B/C-3D cheque’s value by region, the share of central region having largest portion of the total deceased from 43.2% last month to 40.3%, and the other three regions included north eastern, northern, and southern regions, having shares of 24.1%, 19.2%, and 16.3%, respectively.
