For me this is a good opportunity to structure my report in tune with the Bible text. 1. Devoted to the apostles’ teaching: the level of our Biblical literacy today We have to admit that the general level of Biblical literacy in our churches is low. A relatively small part of our church members read the Bible regularly. Therefore our work cannot be based on the assumption that the Biblical text is commonly known and should not be retold. It appears that our pri- mary task is to ignite afresh the interest towards the Holy Scriptures. This cannot happen if our sermons are boring and the love of the preacher to- wards the Biblical text does not show through. It is impossible to overlook the issue about the preacher’s personal attitude towards the apostles’ teaching. If it is formal and the goal is simply to write the Sunday sermon, because one way or another that should happen, we cannot expect great results. Our own spiritual void cannot ignite a desire for spiritual growth in anyone. Preachers must find a way to go back to the Scriptures, back to its regular in depth study, which is undoubtedly an integral part and foundation for their personal spiritual growth and salutary fulfilment of their ministry. We are not talking simply about reading and repeating the letter but about penetrating into Scriptures’ spirit, about the preachers turning into true disciples of Scripture – not into blind Biblical fundamentalists because the apostles’ teaching is “spirit and life” (see John 6:63) and not an ideological platform. Biblical education in our churches is not on a high level too. I do not mean here keeping some kind of an academic level, which is unsuitable with the abilities of the audience. On the contrary, the level of Biblical education I have in mind is to be suitable to the audience’s ability to take it in and at the same time always to lead to the pursuit of making the next step, to build up, to challenge the audience to grow in Biblical knowledge. I am not saying that the Bible lessons where people meet to express their opinion on a par- Notes ticular text are useless (if they have been led well). I think they should offer new knowledge, deepening of the existent knowledge and an invitation to go even further in knowledge as well as in Christian living. All this demands a serious preparation on behalf of the leader, which is usually missing. Thus our Bible lessons turn into dull meetings at which one and the same people talk (just few) and say one and the same thing since the person who should be prepared to talk has nothing substantial to say. But even Bible lessons based on discussions need a serious preparation by the leader and if it is missing it is difficult to draw useful conclusions to all. Simply said the talk- ative participants go home satisfied because they have been able to state their opinion. Overcoming the deficit in the area of Biblical education must start with the preachers – and I mean all preachers, all local pastors as well as all ordained elders. All of us have a deficit – a deficit of knowledge and meth- odology which have to be overcome by active self-education as well as by organized seminars and courses for improving the preachers’ qualification. Audience that does not aim high, does not refute this necessity. On the contrary it hides even greater challenges – to step down to the level of the participant and to help him/her step by step to grow. Since Bible study cannot be isolated from the rest of the theological sub- jects it is necessary to look at the continued education in a more complex way and to make sure it always leads to practice. Specific measures can be taken on a national and Annual Conference level as well as on a church circuit and local church level. Doctor Anna Marinova was given the task to lead a series of Bible seminars on particular sections of the Holy Scripture. So far the following seminars have been held: in Var- na and in Sofia on the Pentateuch (“Is the Law a Law?”), in Shumen and in Sevlievo on the books of the Major Prophets Isaih, Jeremiah and Heze- kiel. Anyone interested in having a Biblical seminar in the local churches or church circuits can turn to Doctor Marinova. Specific themes, Bible texts and books can be studied during the preach- ers’ meetings in the respective church circuit under the leadership of the overseeing pastor. This has been done in the past at preachers’ meetings in Varna church circuit. A proof of that is the book “UMC Forum 1” (Varna, 2001-2002). To a certain extent this practice was resumed at the end of last year with the participation of neighbouring church circuits at the meeting Shumen when the discussion was focused on the UMC understanding on Baptism, as reflected in the official paper entitled “By Spirit and Water”. A second meeting is planned to be held in the spring in our church in Gorno Ezerovo. Notes 2. Consistency in fellowship: Christianity as a community religion Christianity is a community religion and our Methodist tradition agrees with that. Our main goal is building healthy Christian communities. That does not mean building relationship only with a limited number of more active church members. Our communities have to be open to new people, to be hospita- ble and inclusive. The atmosphere must be welcoming, to be building rath- er than rejecting because of an inability to overcome some preset closed circles of people. Such situations have to be eliminated very carefully and to be avoided purposefully by our local churches. The deficit of fellowship is the most common reason for people leaving our churches.
