The 18 works deal with Indonesia and the problems facing developing nations. Subjects include tradition, popular culture, change, and economic development and its impact on women. Indonesia is compared with nations in Africa, and with the United States in a project dealing with freedom of speech, censorship, and freedom of the press. Some of the works include reference bibliographies, maps, classroom handouts, and lesson plans. Many of the items included are materials and projects for teachers to use as a basis for a lesson plan or unit. A teacher workshop agenda provides all materials necessary to hand out to students, a list of goals for the program, and the agenda andprogram for a teacher workshop on Indonesia. Several units consist of syllabi for university courses and include required andreserve readings, videos, and course outlines. Research proposals alscare included. Plans suitable for elementary or secondary school levels include materials covering geography, history, economics, anthropology, and government. Mass communication is discussed in several works. Because of the diverse nature of the population and cultures makingup Indonesia, some of the projects deal with multiculturalism, unity in diversity, and problems relating to ethnic and religious differences.   • The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics
    The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics The Indonesian term adat means ‘custom’ or ‘tradition’, and carries connotations of sedate order and harmony. Yet in recent years it has suddenly become associated with activism, protest and violence. Since the resignation of President Suharto in 1998, diverse indigenous communities and ethnic groups across Indonesia have publicly, vocally, and sometimes violently, demanded the right to implement elements of adat in their home territories. This book investigates the revival of adat in Indonesian politics, identifying its origins, the historical factors that have conditioned it and the reasons for its recent blossoming. The book considers whether the adat revival is a constructive contribution to Indonesia’s new political pluralism or a divisive, dangerous and reactionary force, and examines the implications for the development of democracy, human rights, civility and political stability. It is argued that the current interest in adat is not simply a national offshoot of international discourses on indigenous rights, but also reflects a specifically Indonesian ideological tradition in which land, community and custom provide the normative reference points for political struggles. Whilst campaigns in the name of adat may succeed in redressing injustices with regard to land tenure and helping to preserve local order in troubled times, attempts to create enduring forms of political order based on adat are fraught with dangers. These dangers include the exacerbation of ethnic conflict, the legitimation of social inequality, the denial of individual rights and the diversion of attention away from issues of citizenship, democracy and the rule of law at national level. Overall, this book is a full appraisal of the growing significance of adat in Indonesian politics, and is an important resource for anyone seeking to understand the contemporary Indonesian political landscape.

Philosophy of life that stands on the foundation of nationalism and patriotism that is then color every movement, behavior as well as the epic struggle deeds they do, for the grounding the ideals of independence. Along with that, especially in the context of the independence of the nation, teaching in the form of ideas and ideals that appear to be important life values for the next generation. Besides an attempt to take the essence of the teaching given, also related to the effort to continue to foster national values and love of the homeland as the ethical foundation in terms of bringing the nation to the gates of progress. One in a series of well-known national leader is Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (Hamka); a statesman who thinks that nation- alism and patriotism as part of the faith (religion). Through a sociolog- ical theory of knowledge Mannheim has found that important teaching presented Hamka in relation to the life of the nation that is their re- sponsibility that must be realized that every citizen. Responsibilities shall include nationality, homeland, all of which according to Hamka in line with the main principles of Islam, namely amar ma’ruf nahi munkar.

It has become the identity and characteristic of Indonesia that needs to be preserved and developed. Indonesian people can preserve it by recognizing its products’ existence and conducting development efforts by improving the quality of its products. In Indonesia, batik has been passed down from generations by wearing, producing and marketing its products. The article is the result of a study using a socio-legal method. The data collection was conducted through interview and observation techniques. The research subjects are batik business owners in Indonesia. This paper reveals the challenges and obstacles faced by the local batik product business people in Indonesia in the face of economic globalization. There have been legal efforts to provide protection for the Indonesian batik products. The problems are how the protection is applied and how the country and the community perform the protection. The other objective of this paper is to analyze the readiness of the local batik businesspeople in Indonesia in the face of economic globalization especially from the legal perspective. The article exposes the batik business owners’ weaknesses and seeks to give sound solutions which is hoped to be applied by the batik business owners in Indonesia in order to survive in the globalization era.

    INFLUENCE OF CONFLICT ON MIGRATION AT MOLUCCAS PROVINCE Maryam Sangadji Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Pattimura Ambon Abstraksi Konflik antara komunitas islam dan Kristen di propinsi Maluku menyebabkan lebih dari sepertiga populasi penduduknya atau 2,1 juta orang menjadi IDP (pengungsi) serta mengalami kemiskinan dan penderitaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti proses, dampak dan masalah yang dihadapi para IDP. Hasil analisis kualitatif deskriptif menunjukkan bahwa proses migrasi IDP ditentukan oleh tingkat intensitas konflik dan lebih marginal pada lokasi IDP. Disamping itu terlampau banyak masalah yang timbul dalam mengatasi IDP baik internal maupun eksternal. Kata kunci: konflik komunitas, Maluku. The phenomena of population move as the result of conflict among communities is a problem faced by development, due to population mobility caused by conflict occurs in a huge quantity where this population is categorized as IDP with protection and safety as the reason. The condition is different if migration is performed with economic motive, this means that they have calculate cost and benefit from the purposes of making migration. Since 1970s, there are many population mobility that are performed with impelled manner (Petterson, W, 1996), the example is Africa where due to politic, economic and social condition the individual in the continent have no opportunity to calculate the benefit. While in Indonesia the reform IDP is very high due to conflict between community as the symbol of religion and ethnic. This, of course, contrast with the symbol of Indonesian, namely “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, different but one soul, this condition can be seen from 683 multiethnic and there are 5 religions in Indonesia. In fact, if the differences are not managed, the conflict will appear, and this condition will end on open conflict.

Kemanggisan Ilir III No. 45. Kemanggisan, Palmerah, Jakarta Barat, 11480 [email protected] ABSTRACT The concept of extraordinary crime was a common concept in Indonesia. Adopts from the concept of the most serious crime in Rome Statute and adjusted with the Indonesian legal system. Then it developed wider and introduced into terrorism, corruption, drug abuse offenses, and child sexual abuse in legislations and Constitutional Court verdicts. The implementation of this concept generated some consequences in drafting and formulating the legislation as part of penal policy. This leads to two legal problems; first, what was the categorization of the concept of extraordinary crime? and second, what were the consequences of the concept extraordinary crime in accordance with penal policy?. Normative law research with literature study method, This was a conducted as the response of both legal problems. Using secondary data from legislation, Constitutional Court verdicts, book and journal, this research concludes that; the concept of extraordinary crime parts of criminal policy does not have any standard for the categorization. Then, as consequences of the implementation of the concept of extraordinary crime in several penal efforts are formulating in legislations. The penalty effort is not limited to criminalization and sentencing aspects but wider and shall be in line with the strategy of crime eradication and welfare protection purposes. To reach the effectiveness of the criminal policy of the concept of extraordinary crime, the penalty effort shall be in line with criminal law principles and human right basic principles.

Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract This thesis argues that performances of contemporary theatre in Indonesia are socially- engaged, actively creating, defining and challenging the socio-political environment, and that theatre practitioners are important members of a vibrant civil society who contribute and feel actively committed to democratic processes. Following an initial chapter about the history of modern theatre from the late 19th century until the fall of President Suharto in 1998, the four core chapters centre on four different aspects of contemporary Indonesian socio-politics: historical memory and trauma, violence and human rights, environmentalism, and social transition. Each of these chapters is preceded by an introduction about the wider historical and socio-political context of its respective discourse and is followed by an analysis of selected plays. Chapter 2 focuses on historical trauma and memory, and relates the work of two theatre artists, Papermoon Puppet Theatre and Agus Nur Amal (a.k.a. PM Toh), to processes seeking truth and reconciliation in Indonesia in the post-Suharto era. Chapter 3, on violence and human rights, discusses the works of Ratna Sarumpaet and B. Mani in Southeast Asia, 1944 – 1946 Heather Goodall University of Technology Sydney [email protected] with Mark Ravinder Frost University of Essex [email protected] Abstract: This article, based on new archival materials, reconstructs the experiences and observations of an Indian war correspondent as, from 1944 to 1946, he covered the advance of Indian soldiers of the British-led Indian Army from northeast India, through Burma to Malaya at the war's end, then to their eventual deployment with the South East Asian Command in Java after the Japanese surrender. As it transpired, Captain P. R. S. Mani worked as an enlisted public relations officer of the British-led Indian Army but also sustained his commitment as a patriotic Indian nationalist, who gathered intelligence on the Indian diaspora in Southeast Asia and on the impact of Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army. Relatively little scholarship has focused on Asian war journalism. Mani’s tension-ridden role as a self-styled ‘Indian Army observer’ provides an illuminating insight into the way Britain’s lines of communication were appropriated and subverted during wartime and beyond, and into the way his own nationalism was reshaped by his unofficial transnational activities. ……………………………………………….. Source: Daud Tanudirjo. The grandeur of Borobudur has fascinated almost every visitor who views it. Situated in the heart of the island of Java in Indonesia, this remarkable stone structure is considered to be the most significant Buddhist monument in the Southern Hemisphere (Figure 1). In 1991, Borobudur 66 Transcending the Culture–Nature Divide in Cultural Heritage was inscribed on the World Heritage List, together with two other smaller stone temples, Pawon and Mendut. These three stone temples are located over a straight line of about three kilometres on an east-west orientation, and are regarded as belonging to a single temple complex (Figure 2). Known as the Borobudur Temple Compound, this World Heritage Site meets at least three criteria of the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention: (i) to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius, (ii) to exhibit an important interchange of human values over a span of time or within cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or landscape design, and (iii) to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literacy works of outstanding universal value (see also Matsuura 2005).
