Old Oak play park gets a makeover

Discussions with children to seek their views about what they would like in a play area: a competitive tendering exercise on behalf of the Parish Council and funding through a bid to the New Homes Bonus has seen the complete refurbishment of this well-loved play area for the 8 years and under age group. Esme and Aiden enjoying the new park!

With an eye to the environment, two weekends were spent by volunteers clearing the original loose-fill rubber chipping safety surface – 16 tonne bags were filled (huge thanks to the Blenkhorn family, James and Kathy Laband, Roger Tosh and Michelle Webb for their efforts). The chippings are now aiding the safety of disabled riders at Shacks Barn (thanks to Andy Kitchin for transporting the said materials). A win/win for everyone as this exercise saved money and the rubber chippings having to be expensively dealt with!

The play area is now a bright and colourful, extended play site. There is a new low-level balance trail on the enclosed grassy area, an imaginative Wizard Multiplay unit as well as a three way bouncing cockerel – all this set in a new upgraded (and hopefully), low maintenance, safety surface.

Over the past few years the Parish Council has invested time and money in replacing and extending the fencing, providing new seats for the adults to use and the general maintenance of this site. This refurbished area adds to local facilities and sits alongside the play area at Church Street, the two pocket parks and the SRA to provide recreational amenities for the population of Silverstone.

The exhibition was held in the school hall of Silverstone CE Primary School between the 9th and 14th of April and was a resounding success by any measure. Attendance (some 450 visitors) was unprecedented in the village for an event of this kind and we are most grateful to the head teacher, Mr James Bloomfield, for making the fine school hall available for our extensive material.

Visitors were able to view their village from a completely different perspective, both historical and topographical, and to consider the wide range of options available for the long-term future of our village and its enhancement for current and future generations.

We would also like to thank all those who assisted in the production of the exhibition material and the exhibition aides who gave their time to engage with the public and guided them through a complex series of exhibits and issues, the result of some two years of research and analysis by the Neighbourhood Plan team.

It was gratifying to note that the event was conducted in a positive and pleasurable manner for team members and visitors alike and that the vast majority of people left the exhibition with a more up-beat attitude than they had anticipated. This augurs well for the future of our village and for the next steps in finalizing our plans.

We carefully monitored resident’s attitudes to the array of information presented to them via a comprehensive questionnaire, which most people diligently completed for us. The key results of the “tick box” exercise are shown in the chart on the next page.

Silverstone News & Views | 11 QUESTIONS FROM THE SURVEY A • The Exhibition has demonstrated how Silverstone has grown organically and consistently, since 1900. Do you accept that further, organic growth of the village is unavoidable?

B Both and Silverstone Park (circuit related employment) have produced long term Master Plans to guide their future growth. Do you support the view that a long-term Plan for the remainder of the Parish should be devised whereby all future development is controlled by the community for the community?

C • Do you agree that any long term Plan should incorporate housing in the following categories? • Rental, shared ownership and low-cost sale. • Open market housing for sale (which would subsidise community facilities). • Individual Plots for sale (which would create income for village facilities).

D • Do you support the development of a new ‘VILLAGE HUB’ Incorporating the following facilities : • New Village Hall. • New Health Centre. • Shop (to operate in co-existence with the existing village store via subsidy, legal agreement, etc.)

E Do you support the concept of a development Strategy to include the following village-wide Amenities? • Tennis Club on a dedicated site. • Cricket Club and Pavilion on a dedicated site. • SRA & parking to be enhanced for soccer & indoor activities (following construction of new Village Hall). • Cycleway network (linking to school/employment). • New pond(s)/lake for fishing/leisure). • Trim (keep fit) trail. • New footpath link to the forest.

F Do you support the creation of a village-wide ecological strategy to enhance existing wildlife areas and corridors and, where possible, to create new ones?

G Do you support the SNPWP/Parish Council LONG TERM “Silverstone Master Plan Vision” which : • Guides all new housing development to only those locations demonstrated to be sustainable. Protects all the strategic open (green) areas of the village in perpetuity. • Creates a new ‘Community Hub” incorporating the new school, in an accessible and visible location. with generous parking provision, together with excellent public transport and cycleway access.

The results of the survey are overwhelmingly skewed in favour of our recommended long term Master Plan Vision for Silverstone. Moreover, the virtual unanimity expressed by villagers can now be harnessed to eliminate harmful, unplanned, speculative development from our parish and to move towards a final Neighbourhood Plan which conserves the best of our inherited heritage whilst taking a pro-active approach to enhancing all of our village facilities for the future. We also asked for general comments which may not have been covered in the tick box exercise and many respondents also completed this section of the questionnaire. We promised to reply to all types of comment in detail; the whole exhibition is online and available on the Parish website: www.silverstonevillage.org and a full, detailed Q and A schedule will be prepared soon for posting online.

Next Steps We now need to consider all the feedback from the exhibition and to produce the final draft of the Neighbourhood Plan. This will be in the form of a lengthy written (policy) document supported by an evidence base, created from our in-depth research. Further liaison will be needed over the coming months with our planning policy advisers, SNC officers and key stakeholders.

The next public event, which we shall widely publicise, will be a village referendum on the Neighbourhood Plan. We hope and expect that residents will turn out in force to this event and give their resounding, formal support to the plan.Silverstone Neighbourhood Plan Working Party.

The photo ‘Where am I?’ in the April issue of N&V brought back a few memories.

It shows the old barns belonging to George Lovell, on the site of the current Silson Surgery. Must have been taken almost from our driveway, as we lived in the bungalow next door from 1968-83.

Here’s a (rather poor quality) photo taken from a similar position, showing George himself. He had owned and run a timber yard covering the site of the 7 bungalows, built in 1968, and we were the first to move in. Seeing me digging the back garden, George told me to expect to find the odd horse buried there. Never found one, just a lot of sawdust. Also a wider view showing more of the barns, which were used for car parking before demolition.

We bought the bungalow (next to the now Surgery) in 1968, and actually put a deposit down before any work had started. After a few weeks we noticed some pegs in the ground and were very excited that our new home was on the way.

When it was finished, however, I noticed that the garage was offset to the right of the driveway, by a foot or so, leaving a small ‘dogleg’ when driving a car into the garage.

I remarked on this to George Lovell, and he looked a bit sheepish before admitting that he had moved the original builders’ pegs, to give himself a tiny bit more land. “If I’d known it ‘ud be nice folks like you, I udn’t have done it” he said.

We got on very well with George and used to take him to visit various pubs in the area.

Silverstone News & Views | 21 Greens Norton Scout Group - Scout ‘Street sleep’.

On Friday 21st June 2019, Scouts from the Greens Norton Scout Group (Silverstone) will be engaged in a ‘Street Sleep’ in Silverstone Village centre to raise awareness of young homeless people in the area.

We will be sleeping rough on the pavement around the Church, Shop and the Pub overnight and will be collecting donations for local homeless charities. In addition, we will have access to the Church rooms for the Scouts to stage a mock ‘homeless shelter’ to include a Soup Kitchen and collection point for essential items needed by street sleepers.

We are pleased and proud to be supported by Croft Stores, the White Horse Public house and Melanie Dennison, with their support we will be feeding not only the scouts – but also offering a mug of soup to those who attend the church rooms with a) a mug and b) a donation of £2 towards local homeless charities.

Ruth Tyson of Ark Design has been kind enough to produce for us both the posters you will see around the village and the advert in this publication. Ruth has been working with the homeless and it is with Ruth’s help that we have devised a list of essential and desired goods (see advert) which we hope you will bring along with you and drop off during the evening.

Between 8pm and 12midnight we will be operating a ‘Soup Kitchen’ at the Church Rooms – Bring along a mug and £2 for a hearty mug of soup. We will also offer an opportunity to sponsor a blanket. These and all other goods will then be distributed amongst the needy by the homeless charity – assisted by the scouts after the event.

This is one of many Community activities that Greens Norton Scout group engage in throughout the year – in addition Scouts, Cubs and Beavers will also be sweeping through Bucknell woods again in June, litter picking and tidying like a pack of ravenous Wombles. It is essential that we teach our young people the importance of looking after both the needy in society but also our environment. For any further information on these or other Scout activities or how you can help with this Homeless awareness activity please feel free to contact Mac on 07931243440. Thank You.

Cooking lessons Singing Walks around the village A wide variety of crafts

The warm and welcoming atmosphere fostered by our staff is something that is often commented upon by the parents of our children. Our children are happy and well cared for.

Please come and visit us and see the staff and children of Silverstone Pre-School in action. We are looking forward to meeting you!

To organise a visit, please contact the manager, Dawn Jenkins, on 01327 858886 Silverstone Pre-School, Chapel Rooms, Murswell Lane, Silverstone, Northants NN12 8UT Interested in helping Silverstone Pre-School? Due to the charity-run nature of our Pre-School, we require a committee (minimum 5 members) to oversee its running.

Up to this point, the committee has been made up solely of parent volunteers, but we would very much like to extend the invitation to join our committee to the wider Silverstone community. We feel that this would reflect the role that we play in village life and we would love to be able to benefit from the skills and expertise of local people.

Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 3rd July but any interest would need to be registered no later than two weeks prior to that. Please email Bethan Fanthorpe, the Chair of the committee, on [email protected] by Wednesday 19th June should you wish to be involved. Volunteers will need to complete an EY2 form and be DBS checked by Ofsted on joining the committee.

Silverstone News & Views | 35 Silverstone in Colour!

As I drove back into the village the other day, past the new school, I thought how very lucky we all are to live in this village. Not only do we have a new school with wonderful facilities, but we can also boast an incredible Village Shop, a Post Office, a vibrant Pub, two Churches, sports facilities and our very own Medical Centre. All of this, Lucy Yarrow on top of our association with Silverstone Circuit that gives us the benefit of reduced price or sometimes even free entry to events. I wonder how many other villages have all this?

Of course, it’s not the facilities that make a thriving village but the people who live there. We also have many clubs, groups and organisations catering for all manner of interests and activities that are attended by villagers young and old.

Silverstone is not however, the prettiest village. We don’t have that chocolate box image of a village pond and green, just a concrete triangle that forms the central village hub!

A group of us are trying our best to make this centre more attractive by creating colourful floral displays. You will have noticed I’m sure, the wonderful daffodils and tulips this spring that created some much-needed colour to cheer everyone up after the long winter. These will soon be replaced with summer planting and we also have two new planters being installed soon. The WI have tidied up the area around the War Memorial and the Parish Council are organizing the refurbishment of the bus shelter. The ongoing care of the planting is all being done by volunteers. Although started by members of the Gardening Club it is intended to be a project on its own and is now also being supported by the Parish Council and local businesses.

36 | Silverstone News & Views I recently watched on TV a couple of episodes of Britain in Bloom and was amazed to see how many volunteers were involved in the projects. So far, we have four volunteers organizing the project and we are happy with that, but we need more casual helpers for watering. Silverstone has a population of 2000! Now I don’t want to nag – I know you all lead very busy lives, and maybe you think I’m just a crazy woman wanting to plant flowers in the village, but what I would say is that getting involved, even in a small way by helping to care for the planters, is tremendously satisfying – believe me! It has been proved that even having a vase of flowers in your home makes you feel better, so think what this could do for everyone. It’s also a very social thing to do as passers-by always comment and chat.

The planters just need watering once a week and dead heading to keep them looking their best. There are only approx. 20 weeks over the summer that they need attention. It doesn’t take long to top up the reservoirs if done on a regular basis. So why not volunteer to help make a prettier village? You can get the family involved – bigger children can pick off the dead flowers and the little ones can wait for the water to overflow at the bottom and tell you when to stop watering!

I have made a rota of the summer weeks so if you think you can spare some time once (or even twice!) a year to help, do please put your name down. It can be done Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Steve and Cheryl at The White Horse have kindly said we can take water from outside the kitchen at the pub and I will leave 2 watering cans next to the tap. To join in the Silverstone in Colour project and put your name down to help, choose a time on a weekend between June and September and email me: [email protected] , tel:07746649696 or pm me on Facebook at Sue Rudland.

Come on everyone – help make Silverstone a really pretty village! I look forward to hearing from you!

Sue Rudland
