Both Edges of the Margin: Blacks and Asians in Mississippi Masala, Barriers to Coalition Building Taunya Lovell Bankst Asians often take the middle position between White privilege and Black subordination and therefore participate in what Professor Banks calls "simultaneous racism," where one racially subordinatedgroup subordi- nates another. She observes that the experience of Asian Indian immi- grants in Mira Nair's film parallels a much earlier Chinese immigrant experience in Mississippi, indicatinga pattern of how the dominantpower uses law to enforce insularityamong and thereby control different groups in a pluralistic society. However, Banks argues that the mere existence of such legal constraintsdoes not excuse the behavior of White appeasement or group insularityamong both Asians and Blacks. Instead,she makes an appealfor engaging in the difficult task of coalition-buildingon political, economic, socialand personallevels among minority groups. This thesis argues that the primary mover of the migration were the edicts, or Farmans, of the Ismaili spiritual leader. They were instrumental in motivating Ismailis to go to East Africa. -

Abstract: Migrant or diasporic communities are often seen wrestling with the question of identity, a sense of home and belonging. The distress such communities have to face is a sense of this or that, a sense of anxiety between assimilation of the host country’s culture and traditions or an urge to stay in touch with their own cultural roots, traditions and practices. Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala (1991) offers to its viewers the dilemma faced by a diasporic (Gujarati) community in Mississippi, who are lost in- between different identities. The diasporic anguish is reflected through the movie, showing a loss of culture, loss of home and above all a loss of sense of belonging somewhere. The paper will examine the ways in which culture becomes a burden along with an attempt to understand the role of space and place in the formation of one’s identity. The idea of displacement tells that it may occur in two ways voluntary and involuntary. While involuntary (forced) displacement happens due to the natural calamities, political, social, religious turmoil and what not, voluntary displacement, more over psychologically, takes place due to mainly aspiration for better life, globalization and its offshoots. Though the displacement helped to have developments in all fields to the diasporic people as well as the people in homeland, it creates immeasurable problems physically and psychologically such as assaults from host community, identity crises, cross-cultural conflict, alienation, home and host issues, trauma of uprooting and re-rooting, gender problems etc. in diasporic people. The study tries to find out the major issues in the hostland after displacement and how do diasporic people respond to it. Taking examples for voluntary and involuntary displacement from Indian Diasporic director Mira Nair’s movies The namesake (2006) and Mississippi Masala (1991), the study aims to understand the consequences of displacement and psychological issues of the diaspora. -

The Namesake
The Namesake Dir: Mira Nair, USA, 2006 A review by Rashna Wadia Richards, State University of New York Brockport, USA Mira Nair's The Namesake (2006) begins with a train crash. The year is 1974, and Ashoke Ganguli (Irfan Khan), an aspiring engineer and avid reader of Russian literature, is traveling from Calcutta to Jamshedpur to visit his grandfather. He never reaches that destination. While he is absorbed in the sartorial travails of Akaky Akakyevich, Nikolai Gogol's unfortunate protagonist, the train derails, abruptly altering the course of Ashoke's life. Until now, he has sought to see the world merely through reading - to "travel without moving an inch," as his grandfather had put it. But after the wreck, he decides to heed the advice of a fellow passenger, Mr. Ghosh, who, only moments before the crash, urges him to leave home and travel outside of himself. The opening catastrophe, which becomes the film's primal scene, leads Ashoke, and later his arranged-marriage bride Ashima (Tabu), away from the familiar and familial Bengali life to the chilly, alien world of New York. [1] The Namesake follows the story of the Ganguli family - Ashoke and Ashima, and their anxiously Americanized children, Gogol and Sonia - in America. They arrive as strangers and spend the rest of their lives negotiating the complex dynamics of home and homeland, immigration and integration. What is especially remarkable about Nair's film is the way it locates the struggle for assimilation by highlighting the conflicted, hybrid cultural identities of its characters, heightened by the decisive clash between first and second generations of the Indian diaspora and their ambivalent relationships with home. -

Bookkeeping: Discourses of Debt in Caribbean Canadian Literature by Lisa Camille van der Marel A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Lisa Camille van der Marel, 2018 ABSTRACT This thesis examines representations of debt and obligation in works of Caribbean Canadian literature published between 1997 and 2007. It uses these representations to discuss the relationship between postcolonial, global, and diasporic approaches to cultural studies. These disciplinary distinctions draw explicit and implicit divisions between the colonial, the postcolonial, and the transnational as discrete historical moments in a teleologic progression. Against such divisions, literary works by David Chariandy, Ramabai Espinet, Dionne Brand, and Nalo Hopkinson suggest that colonial pasts do not remain in the past but continue to overdetermine the ‘transnational’ present. Intriguingly, each of these authors uses the language of debt and obligation to describe these temporal and geographical entanglements. This thesis draws on new economic criticism, memory studies, theories of recognition, treaty citizenship, and Afro-pessimism to argue firstly that Caribbean Canadian literature’s representations of debt refute emerging neo-Marxist theories of debt’s governmentality offered in response to the 2008 global financial crisis, and secondly, that they expose diaspora studies’ underlying valuation of individual autonomy and possessive individualism. By representing colonial pasts as outstanding and unpayable debts, fictional and nonfictional works dispute the seemingly clean breaks contemporary scholarship and political debates can draw between colonial pasts and transnational futures. Debt, at its simplest, is any exchange not brought to completion; Canada’s present is a space of incomplete—and incompletable—cultural, economic, and intellectual exchanges. -

Preventing the recurrence of Coups d’état: Study of Fiji Natasha Khan PhD University of York Law April 2015 ABSTRACT This research, affirms that some mechanisms of the transitional justice approaches can be applicable to SIDS conflict; particularly structural conflicts. The fourth principle of the Joinet/Orentlicher Principles of ‘Dealing with the Past’; the right to non-occurrence of conflict, was utilised as a conceptual framework to research the case of Fiji, as it addresses military and institution reforms; both of which are problematic area in Fiji. Focus groups interviews, semi-structured questionnaires and key informant interviews were used to collect data. The overall research question was: ‘How can transitional justice strategies address conflicts that are distinctive to Small Island developing states?’, and the more specific questions related to amnesty, military reform and prevention of coup d’états in the future. The thesis confirms that many respondents and key informants regard amnesty for coups d’état negatively and unjust. A number of key informants also think that amnesty is bad as it sends the wrong signals to the coup perpetrators and to future generations. Respondents felt strongly (78%) that the coup perpetrators should be held accountable as coups are illegal, but they also acknowledged that the military is too strong and praetorian at this stage in Fiji to be held accountable. Findings also indicate that there were mixed views on military reform. A number of other important reforms were also suggested by the respondents to prevent the reoccurrence of coups in Fiji. -

This dissertation examines the political development of the Indian community in West Malaysia and Singapore in the period 19^5 to 1957« It traces its transition from an essentially India-oriented community immediately after the Occupation to a more permanently-settled community in 1957* with a secure place in the Government of Independent Malaya* After an opening chapter outlining the main political features of the Malayan Indian community prior to 19^+5 * the succeeding chapters, covering the period 19^5-1957* are arranged thematically. They consider the impact of Indian nationalism on the local Malayan community, the politicization of Indian labour, the Indian response to the Malayan Union and the Federation Agreement, the participation of the Indians in formal politics, factionalism within the Indian community, and finally the alignment of the Malayan Indian Congress with the Alliance in the mid-1950,s.
