Page:3 Nov 25, 2018 Introduction Welcome to our second Sporting Memorabilia, Collectables, Coins & Banknotes Auction for 2018. As usual, we are delighted to present another interesting sale full of the unusual, the rare and the beautiful. We begin with the Sport section which includes an original and complete 1887 Goodwin & Co (NY) album, one of the earliest series of cigarette or trade cards. An original Torsten Weller authenticated set of golf clubs used by the great Peter Thomson could go for anything. [email protected] The Olympics material includes the collections of Allan Calloway (Rowing) and Harry Gallagher (Swimming). Gallagher’s items include a group of early swimming texts from the 19th century. Again, Cricket is the standout part of the sale, featuring the balance of Don Wigan’s collection of autographs and the collection of Test leg-spinner Ray Bright. There are several very early membership tickets and medallions, Victor Richardson’s 1930 Ashes Medal, framed team photos, an unnamed “Baggy Green” and dozens of Team Sheets including Australia’s first official sheet, for the 1938 Test Team. Gary Watson [email protected] Highlight of the Australian Rules Football section is the 1918 Carlton guernsey worn by Ern Cowley. This is the oldest-known jumper with the CFC monogram. The numerous cigarette and trade card lots are sure to be popular. In our July sale we had a marvellous group of mostly sport-related posters. The great success for that material has resulted in further consignments offered here, most notably Motoring including for Griffon Motocyclettes, Spido Oil, 1973 Indianapolis 500 and even the humble Vespa motor scooter. The Collectables section includes a terrific group of World Expositions memorabilia with Nick Anning rare books, photographs and maps from 19th century events. (If you are interested in this [email protected] subject, you should also look at the World Picture Postcards in our 24 November Stamp Auction.) There is also much of interest in Autographs, Movie Memorabilia, Travel & Tourism Posters, and Australiana including sketches of six convicts and a brass fireman’s helmet. Under Numismatics, there are some beautiful gold pieces, most notably an 1885 Austrian Sharp-Shooting medal in superb condition. Two Irish banknotes dated 1808 are likely to be hotly contested. Max Williamson The Australian Coins & Banknotes features two important new discoveries. The first is a [email protected] Melbourne Centenary Florin specimen or pattern coin with Nipple on Rider’s Right Breast. Only a handful of these rare coins have been recorded. Nick found this important coin in a general consignment! The second new discovery is a 1927 Riddle/Heathershaw £5 with the incorrect inscription ‘CHAIRMAN OF DIRECTORS…’ instead of ‘GOVERNOR…’ Mick Vort-Ronald has recorded only five of these ‘Q/12’ prefix notes being offered in the past 46 years. You are encouraged to study our Cross-Reference Listing at the back of the catalogue. Yang Liu This tool enables you to find items of interest to you that may be hiding in unexpected [email protected] places. This is especially important if you collect by reference to a topic or theme. We are now accepting consignments for our February 2019 auction. Note that we often travel to collect material. In November Nick will be driving to Adelaide for The Coin & Banknote Show at Torrens Parade Ground on 17-18 of the month. He can accept material at the show, or in either direction between Melbourne and Adelaide. Contact Max Williamson or Nick Anning today to learn how you can benefit from “The Abacus Difference”.
