2 Ebberston Village Hall Report by Colin Langley (Chair) 01723 859086 . Hall Bookings, Sue Kirby, 01723 850203/ www.ebberston.net The antiques evening held on an extremely wet evening in November proved both popular and fascinating. Many thanks to all those who brought along objects to be discussed by Angus Ashworth from Ryedale Auctioneers. We had a wide range of very interesting items. The Christ- mas quiz proved to be our most popular for some time with over 50 people attending and £330 was raised for the Village Hall. We are grate- ful to Val and David Palfrey for all their hard work in putting the quiz together. The New Year started with an interesting talk by Kate Giles from the University of York about her recent research on the wall paint- ings in Pickering Church.

Forthcoming Events On Thursday 20th February at 7pm, David Swann will entertain us with a musical evening. Admission will be £5 to include cheese and biscuits and do bring along your own bottle. On Thursday 26th March, 7pm we will host “What’s in a Name?” led by volunteers from Malton Museum, where we will rediscover old words and their local history connections. An entertaining evening for eve- ryone, whether you remember ‘Call my Bluff’ or not! Do look out for posters in the usual places around the Village for these events. On Saturday 4th April from 2pm to 4pm we are hoping to hold an Information Afternoon for activities that go on in the village. The idea is that organisations, clubs, societies etc in the village can tell people about what they do and hopefully recruit some new members. Admis- sion will be free and there will be no charge to organisations wishing to take part. Refreshments will be on sale in aid of the Village Hall. If you are interested in taking part please let Judith Winters (859730) know as soon as possible as we will take a final decision on how to proceed at the beginning of March. May sees the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe with the May Day Bank Holiday being moved to May 8th. We

3 have been considering how we might mark the event. If you have any ideas/suggestions please pass them to me or another member of the Committee. The Annual General Meeting for the Village Hall will be held on Mon- day 2nd March at 7pm in the Village Hall. The meeting is open to all. It is important to maintain a flow of volunteers as various members pass on their baton so please come along if you would like to get involved. And on behalf of the Committee, can I thank you once again for the sup- port you all give to the Village Hall.

Ebberston Chapel Report by Helen Leng - 01723 850464 The Christmas services were all well attended with 45 at the Commu- nity Carol Service, 60 at the Christingle Service and 45 on Christmas Day. The Christingle Service was a new venture and Rev. Peter Sheasby brought the Peace flame from Bethlehem to make the service very special. It was lovely to have three generations of several families present and when the christingles were all made and the candles lit. The lights were put out and chapel looked wonderful. Thank you to all who put the work in to make it so special, oh and it is in the diary for this year! The Epiphany Winter Warmer Lunch on January 8th was well attended and we all enjoyed. The stew, mash and veg with a pudd to follow organ- ised by Joan Peck so our thanks to her and the team. The next event will be the Pancake lunch on 25th February so put it in your diary. Enjoy sandwiches with a cup of tea and pancakes with a choice of toppings to follow. No need to book and pay on the door, raf- fle as usual. We were sad to lose Marian Metcalfe from our number in December and want to record her years of service in the village and the chapel. We will miss her greatly and offer our prayers of comfort to the family. A warm welcome to all who have recently moved into the village. We would love to see you at chapel or any of the events mentioned above, and if you would like Helen to visit or offer prayer please contact her on

4 850464. Services are now at 10:30am but sometimes we join with Allerston or Thornton Dale so please watch the board for more details.

Fun Club Fun Club will run on February 19th, March 18th and April 15th from 4pm –5pm in chapel with Helen and Mary. If you are aged four or older please join us for fun, games, puzzles, drama and refreshments. All welcome.

St John the Baptist, Yedingham

Repor by Joy & Roger Sugden - www.buckrosecarrs.org.uk Happy New year to you all! The highlights of Christmas are over, the decorations put away but we take special care that we take the true message of Christmas with us into the new decade. Our evening carol service was a joyous event and well attended as well as the Benefice service on Christmas morning. One of our congregation who always leads our singing managed to help villagers bring in the New Year at The Providence as their guest singer. Snowdrops, the heralds of spring, are showing themselves in profusion along Station Road. Special thanks to the Parish Council for clearing the Village Green area opposite the Old School, which is carpeted with snowdrops and will soon be followed by daffodils of several varieties. We look forward to our Easter celebrations. The Easter Garden Service will be Friday 10th April in the afternoon.

St Mary the Virgin, Ebberston Report by Keith Simpson (Nominated Church Warden) – 01723 859424 Thank you are two simple words but they are so relevant for the Christ- 5 mas period. However, firstly, thanks should again be mentioned for the Autumn Lunch (£340 raised) and the Reckless Shepherd Concert (£240 raised with one-half share sent to the British Heart Foundation). The collection at the Remembrance Sunday Service (£127.50) was do- nated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. And so to December. A big thank you to all those who donated toys, games etc for the Toy Service. These were warmly received by the Rainbow Centre. The Christmas celebrations were concluded with the Christmas Eve Mass and special thanks are extended to Canon Alan Payne for being the celebrant. Finally, but by no means small, thanks are again expressed to those in- volved in the Christmas decorating of the church (including Tony for the floodlighting). Thank you to those who provided flowers etc, contrib- uted to the cost and/or helped with the arrangements. Also a special thank you to David and Sue Grewer for again providing the Christmas Tree (and Tony for doing the decorating of it).

Ebberston Community Coffee Morning

Report by Michael Peck (Chair) - 01723 850214 / [email protected] Snowdrops are out, and daffodils are not far behind. Spring is on its way – so come out of hibernation! Get yourself out to our community coffee morning held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 10am to 12 noon at the Chapel on Main Street. (Be aware – don’t get caught out, some months have 5 Wednesdays in them, which makes the 3rd one early rather than late – that particular month, mark your calendar!) Come and meet those you may not have set eyes on for some time, 6 peruse our extensive collection of books and jigsaws or see what bargains are on offer on the community produce stall. All proceeds to local charities. In the last 12 months, these have included Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Team and ‘Away from it all’ caravan holidays. Our thanks to those who donate items for sale and to you for your continued support. These sums do not include donations made for tea and coffee which are donated elsewhere. So, come on down (or up) and see us, the red cup and saucer sign marks the spot!

Ebberston & Yedingham Neighbourhood Watch

Report by Tony Calvert (NHW Key Co-ordinator) - 01723 859059 One of the main purposes of Neighbourhood Watch is to try and inform as many people as possible about criminal activities in their area, in the hope that they will be spared the trauma of it happening to them or pro- vide information that will enable people to take precautions to prevent those activities affecting them. Not many years ago, this was achieved by volunteer Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators receiving email messages from the police about crimes in their area and this information was then conveyed by passing a paper message through the letter boxes of all their neighbours. As police budgets became smaller, the person working for the police, who was responsible for passing on this information, became the subject of cut- backs and as a result, valuable information was not being passed on as often as it used to be. Realising this shortfall, together with the need to update the information system used by the police, a new computerised system was installed that was intended to improve the flow of informa- tion to the areas where it would have benefits and gave the Neighbour- hood Watch Coordinators the opportunity to access information on criminal activities and what precautions should be taken to minimise the effect of crime. The intention was that the Coordinators would then email their neighbours with this information, thereby going some way to helping minimise the effect of criminal activities. This of course relied upon neighbours supplying the Coordinators with their email addresses, but unfortunately, in spite of repeated pleas in the Parish Newsletter, co-operation met with some reluctance in our village and the informa-

7 tion system almost ground to a halt! A new North Community Messaging system operated by Police now exists and access has been extended to ALL members of the public, so they can see for themselves what is happen- ing throughout the North Yorkshire area and removing the need for the Coordinators to pass on information. The official website is http://www.nycm.co.uk and this will allow you to set up an account where you can sign in and access information that could be useful to you, in addition to allowing you to change your delivery method preference or locations of interest. It also contains a FAQs section, which may assist with any queries that you have. These links will only ever link you to trusted secure websites and will only give you attachments where they believe it is absolutely necessary.

9 Ebberston & Allerston W.I. Report by Frances Langley, Secretary: Frances Langley - 01723 859086 / fa.langley@btinter- net.com, President: Rosemary Rayne At the November meeting our committee was appointed for the coming year with Rosemary Rayne continuing as President, Frances Langley as secretary and Janet Cromack as Treasurer. In early December we hosted the Derwent Valley Group annual carol service. This was held in Ebberston Methodist Chapel and kindly led by Helen Leng. Afterwards tea and mince pies were served in the Vil- lage Hall. The event was well attended by members from other local W.I.s and was a lovely ‘warm up’ for Christmas. Later in the month we rounded off our centenary year with an excellent lunch at The Forest & Vale Hotel. We welcomed in the New Year with a cheese and wine social evening. A few brave members put on a brief ‘tongue in cheek’ performance of ‘Cinderella’, which had everyone laughing. We have recently welcomed several new members and if there’s anyone else out there thinking of joining just come along and give us a go – you will be made very welcome. Ebberston Sportsfield Association

Report by Liam Allanson & Secretary Faye Allanson - [email protected] Hello! Happy New Year to you all and here is to an exciting 2020 for Ebberston Sportsfield. If you have visited in recent weeks, you may have noticed that a small section of the park has been dismantled and removed, this was purely for safety reasons and unfortunately it was be- yond repair. We are currently in discussions about what will be replacing this section and hope to have this confirmed and installed in the coming months. 10 We have installed a new bike rack near to the toilets, this is available to use by all visitors and we hope it makes bike storage, safer, easier and more secure. Also, if print times run accordingly we should also have the new signs in place in and around the park by March, something we are very excited for and again thank our sponsors Signs Express Limited as without them this would have been a very costly update. Alongside new signs, new bins and donations boxes will be appearing soon, in hope to keep the area tidier and boost donations to Ebberston Sportsfield. Finally, if you would like a more in depth update or have any questions to ask or even join the committee, please attend our meeting at The Grapes at 7.30pm on 4th February. It is important that you confirm your attendance to [email protected] before so we can ensure we have enough space. Thank you!

Ebberston Cricket Club

Report by Ashley Winspear - [email protected] / 01723 447604 / 07841725976 It may be the close season but with the season now in front of us, plans are afoot to get existing and new players of all ages and abilities, into shape. To this end the Club has booked indoor nets, which will com- mence Friday 21st February 7 til 8pm, Norton College Road, and will run up to and including Friday 17th April. From early April, it is antici- pated, weather permitting, that practice will take place at the cricket ground, either in the nets there or out on the square. On the social side, recent events, which are largely organised by Frankie Beal include a Christmas dinner at The Coachman, that raised £350. A pre-season quiz is currently being planned, but no date as yet. At our November AGM, Jonny Mason stepped down as 1st team captain after a number of years and has been replaced by Alex Machen. For the 2nds, Sam Megginson continues in post as Saturday and Evening League captain. It is expected that the Saturday League will start on Saturday 25th April for our first Xl in the Premier Division, and conclude on Sat 12th September. The 2nds season should also start on Satuday 25th April and 11 finish on the last Saturday in August. We look forward to seeing old and new friends at these games. Sadly, after many years of fielding a junior team, this will no longer be the case as our last season’s crop are in the majority, too old to play at U15 level and we do not have sufficient numbers in any other age range to enter a team. When April comes we will be looking for our younger, fitter, members, to lend a hand with the usual pre-season ground work, carrying out seats, putting up netting, raising the sight screens to their full height, so when Sam or social media requests assistance, then please do your utmost to attend. In regards to social media, for those of you with Facebook access, please check out the Clubs site by searching under Ebberston cricket club for regular updates on Club matters. And this catch up wouldn’t be complete without the usual begging request. Annual running costs of a modestly sized cricket club, like our- selves, are £8000 and this takes a great deal of hard work to cover from our core income stream (canteen). It is therefore vital that we maximise income streams from outside sources. We are always looking out for sponsors and offer competitively priced perimeter advertising boards, fixture card adverts and match ball sponsorship deals. If you would like to support us in any of these initiatives, then please let me or any Club member know, ideally by the end of February, as I like to get the fixture card details to the printers by this time. We can never have too many sponsors!
