First of all, I hope this note finds you and your family safe and healthy. Then I think about the losses some have endured from financial security to the lives of loved ones. I think about the fact that we are an organization of kindness and compassion. These are some of the finest qualities I find about our rd3 District. HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY !!!! I hope everyone has an exciting Fourth planned this year. While you are enjoying the hot dogs and hamburgers, we can celebrate the birth of this wonderful nation we are privileged to live in. Some of our lodges are taking the summer months off for mem- bers to visit with family and friends, now that the states are opening up after this 15 month of isolation. Some lodges are having summer picnics and kubb tournaments, group visits to the ball park. Whatever you are doing stay safe, stay cool, remember the suntan lotion and have a wonderful summer. This thesis presents an evolution of Appalachian representations—or, more appropriately, a chronology of images in stasis, as they seem to have remained fairly unchanged over time. Responses to those images, however, have changed greatly. Most importantly, responses from within Appalachia have transformed, with regional people gaining power over the types of images of the region in popular culture. -

Comics and Controversy: A Brief History of Comic Book Publishing by Thomas A. Crowell, Esq. The great comic book artist, Will Eisner, defined the comic as a form of “sequential art.”1 Indeed, the narrative use of a series of images is as old as art itself: Cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and medieval tapestries are all precursors to the comic book. Yet comics and controversy have been linked from the very start: Founder of the Protestant movement, Martin Luther, was an early target of editorial cartoons (well, engravings anyway); his critics created caricatures of him as a tool of the devil2 (so in a sense, Spider-Man can trace his origins, not just from a radioactive spider, but also from the Reformation). With the advent of the printing press and the proliferation of newspapers and broadsheets, satirical political cartoons soon began to appear. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, editorial cartoons were a staple in the newspapers of the day. Benjamin Franklin’s famous “Join, or Die” is acknowledged as the first political cartoon in America, and served to galvanize support for colonial unity. In 1837 the first graphic novel was published by Swiss cartoonist Rudolphe Töpffer and was serialized in the American newspapers as “The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck.”3 Although conspicuously missing our now-familiar word balloons and sound effects, the comic book panel 1 Comics & Sequential Art. Magi Hossameldin Professor Thelma Bauer Digital Media Foundations- D304 8:00 - 11:20AM Class December, 18th 2018 Jack Kirby-The Real Unknown Hero Often praised as the “King of Comics”, Jack Kirby has influenced generations of comic book artists and writers alike. Not only a talented comic book artist, he was also a great storyteller, which is considered to be responsible for his success and longevity. Kirby’s influence can still be seen in any modern superhero comics, and even on the big screen. Kirby is responsible for creating many iconic and beloved comic book characters. Jack Kirby was born as Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28, 1917, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. From and early childhood, Kirby aspired to be a storyteller, having being influenced by the stories his mother told him, and the stories in the newspaper comics and in the movie theaters. As a self-taught artist, he started drawing cartoons for the newspaper of the Boys Brotherhood Republic. By the age of 14, he was enrolled in Pratt Institute, but dropped out the afternoon of his first day due to financial pressures. He worked at various studios before starting his career as a super-hero comic book artist. Kirby didn’t begin his career in comics but in the animated cartoons, namely Popeye cartoons at the Max Fleischer studios. He began working at Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate as a political, gag, and strip cartoonist. Through work, he met Joe Simon, and formed a team. In 1940, they were hired by Timely Comics Company, which is known in the present as Marvel Comics. -
