Martin, Chair Professor Kerwin Lee Klein Professor Linda Williams Spring 2014 Copyright 2014 by Joseph Lam Duong Abstract California Hard Core by Joseph Lam Duong Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Waldo E. Martin, Chair California Hard Core is a narrative history of the pornographic film industry in California from 1967 to 1978, a moment when Americans openly made, displayed, and watched sexually explicit films. Two interrelated questions animate this project: Who moved the pornographic film from the margins of society to the mainstream of American film culture? What do their stories tell us about sex and sexuality in the U.S. in the last third of the twentieth century? The earlier academic literature concentrates on pornographic film and political debates surrounding it rather than industry participants and their contexts. The popular literature, meanwhile, is composed almost entirely of book-length oral histories and autobiographies of filmmakers and models. California Hard Core helps to close the divide between these two literatures by documenting not only an eye-level view of work from behind the camera, on the set, and in the movie theater, but also the ways in which consumers received pornographic films, placing the reader in the viewing position of audience members, police officers, lawyers, judges, and anti-pornography activists. -
Cinema E Literatura: Um Exemplo De Como Os Modos De Produção Fílmica Podem Influenciar As Questões Da Adaptação
ABSTRACT This paper discusses the issues of film adaptation, looking for relationships between cinema and literature beyond mere comparativism, which aims to establish “loyalty” as the centerpiece of a theory of adaptation. The paper points out that when transforming a book into film, the issues of adaptation are not just about aesthetic issues, but can also be influenced by its mode of production as an economic process, according to the marketplace on which this film is distributed, funding sources and its audiences. -

From Shame to Game in One Hundred Years: An Economic Model of the Rise in Premarital Sex and its De-Stigmatization Jesús Fernández-Villaverde, Jeremy Greenwood, and Nezih Guner NBER Working Paper No. 15677 January 2010, Revised January 2012 JEL No. E1,E13,J10,J13,N0,O11,O33 ABSTRACT Societies socialize children about sex. This is done in the presence of peer-group effects, which may encourage undesirable behavior. Parents want the best for their children. Still, they weigh the marginal gains from socializing their children against its costs. Churches and states may stigmatize sex, both because of a concern about the welfare of their flocks and the need to control the cost of charity associated with out-of-wedlock births. -

Though derided by critics, this newly minted genre had two notable features: broader narratives within which sex occurred, and an insistent focus on the visual display of male pleasure. Plotting Sex claims that, by embedding sex within a story, sex itself takes on narrative qualities. To support this claim, it teases out small shifts in the twentieth century’s episteme that collectively contributed to the early 1970s emergence of what it terms pornography’s performatistic screen, or the base, plotted structure of bodily performance and engagement underpinning sexual displays as enacted over time in orgasmically-oriented hard core film. This project starts with the twin Foucaultian poles of law and “human sciences” as represented by the metonyms of American obscenity jurisprudence and sexology, finding in both a late 1960s pivot to issues of social construction and utility as tethered to narrative. -

Many of the 70s porn performers are gone and buried. ODs, suicides and AIDS – which also happen to mainstream performers – it seems like in your business a lot more actors had some really rough, and even deadly, times. So, to what do you owe your longevity and survival? There’re only a handful of Marilyn: [laughs] Probably a little bit of AA names who meet the test of here and there. I also have a teenager who keeps legendary adult film icon: JOHN me real busy. As far as being a survivor over the HOLMES, LINDA LOVELACE, RON years, I didn’t totally over-expose myself, pardon JEREMY, TRACY LORDS, GINGER LYNN, JENNA JAMESON the pun. I didn’t go to the max like a lot of porn performers do, especially, today. Incidents of Misogyny and Sexism in the UFC Rampage Jackson In the YouTube video, called “How To Pick Up a Gurl – Fast,” Rampage Jackson attempts to rape a woman in a parking garage. Before attacking his target, Rampage instructs viewers to use chloroform as “something to help her relax” and zip ties. The UFC fighter explains, “I like this parking lot because my cousin work for the security company so I know the cameras are gonna be out of service right now.”1 As Rampage stalks his victim, he comments, “And I hope she got low self-esteem.” The video has received over 200,000 views and remains accessible for public viewing.2 To our knowledge, the UFC has not issued an official statement, fined, or suspended Jackson for the video. In July 2008, video footage was uploaded of Rampage positioning himself behind a female Japanese reporter, placing his hand on her thigh, and dry humping her. When she moves away from him, he follows her and grabs her leg.3 The video currently has 1.4 million views. In June 2009, Rampage, in the middle of an interview, holds Cage Potato reporter Heather Nichols against him, and dry humps her for a full 37 seconds. He continues to hold her after she attempts to end the interview, and does not let her go until a man walks up to Rampage and taps him on the shoulder a few seconds after the interview ends. The video has over 9.8 million views.4 In late May 2011, when being interviewed by MMA Heat host Karyn Bryant, Rampage replied that she’s “Jamaican me horny” in response to her statement that she was Jamaican, black and white. -
