LOUIS, Mo., May 30, 2018 – The Cardinals are back at Busch Stadium after completing a six-game road trip through Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. The seven-game homestand kicks off with a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates (May 31-June 3) and concludes with three games versus the Miami Marlins (June 5-7). The fifth homestand of the season is highlighted by the first-ever Elvis Theme Night, Photo Day and the start of All-Star voting. #VoteSTL Thursday, May 31, 2018 — Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (6:15 p.m.) Gates open at 4:45 p.m. • Scouts Night: All Girl/Boy Scouts and their families are invited to Scout Night at the ballpark. This is the second of three Scout Nights for the 2018 season. Scouts and their guests can enjoy $14 tickets, and each scout theme ticket will include a special Girl/Boy Scout patch. Scout and troop leaders are also invited to participate in a pregame parade around the warning track. ROY STOCKTON PRING TRAINING serves many purposes for the great American S game and business of baseball. The primary objective, of course, is to get the players into the best possible physical condi- tion for the arduous, 154-game pennant races during which the championships of the two major leagues are decided. During this conditioning process young players and others who may have been obtained in trades are inspected and tested in practice sessions, squad games, and exhibition contests. During the off-season each major league club is permitted to carry a maximum of 40 players on its roster. There are modifica- tions to this rule. For instance, returning service men may be carried for a specific period without counting as members of the 40-man squad.

    The Annals of Applied Statistics 2014, Vol. 8, No. 2, 926–955 DOI: 10.1214/13-AOAS712 c Institute of Mathematical Statistics, 2014 MONEYBaRL: EXPLOITING PITCHER DECISION-MAKING USING REINFORCEMENT LEARNING By Gagan Sidhu∗,† and Brian Caffo‡ General Analytics∗1, University of Alberta† and Johns Hopkins University‡ This manuscript uses machine learning techniques to exploit base- ball pitchers’ decision making, so-called “Baseball IQ,” by modeling the at-bat information, pitch selection and counts, as a Markov De- cision Process (MDP). Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

    HISTORY OF BARBERSHOP By David Krause and David Wright Definition of barbershop harmony. Read: Definition of Barbershop Harmony, from the Forward of the Contest and Judging Handbook. The Purpose Of This Course. We will attempt to trace the roots and the evolution of barbershop harmony from well before its actual beginnings up to the present. We will try to answer these questions: What were the tides of history which spawned the birth of the barbershop quartet, and what environment allowed this style of music to flourish? What were its musical forerunners? What are its defining characteristics? What other types of music were fostered contemporaneously, and how did they influence the growth of quartet singing? Which styles are similar, and how are they similar? How did the term "barbershop" arise? How long did the historical era of the barbershop quartet last? What other kinds of music sprang forth from it? Why did the style eventually need preservation? How was SPEBSQSA formed, and how did it become a national movement? What other organizations have joined the cause? How have they coped with the task of preservation? Are current day efforts still on course in preserving the style? How has the style changed since the Society was formed? We will spend the next few hours contemplating and attempting to answer these questions. Overtones. As barbershoppers, we are very conscious of the "ringing" effect which complements our singing. We consider it our reward for singing well- defined pitches in tune. The fact that a tone produced by a voice or an instrument is accompanied by a whole series of pitches in addition to the fundamental one which our ear most easily detects has been known for centuries.
