LOUIS, Mo., August 23, 2016 – Coming off another successful road trip that saw the Redbirds win 6 of 9 games, the Cardinals return home to Busch Stadium for a six game homestand. The homestand starts with three games versus the defending National League champions New York Mets (August 23-25) and concludes with a three game weekend series against the Oakland Athletics (August 26-28). The homestand is highlighted by the 2016 Cardinals Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Beatles Tribute Night and the grand opening of the historic Baseball Hall of Fame Tour at Ballpark Village. Tuesday, August 23, 2016 — Cardinals vs. New York Mets (7:15 p.m.) Gates open at 5:45 p.m. Chris Carpenter Budweiser Bash Theme Night: Fans who purchase a special Bud Bash Theme Ticket receive a voucher for a limited edition Chris Carpenter mini bobblehead as we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the 2006 World Series Champion Cardinals. Battle at Busch: 105.7 The Point and the Cardinals welcome back the Battle at Busch concert series. The 2016 schedule features 18 local bands over the course of six nights, at six different Cardinals home games in Ford Plaza. Tonight’s battle features Sharon Hazel Township, Tree One Four and Last Plane Out. Gate 6 will open at 5:15 p.m. for the event. Performances begin at 5:30 p.m. with each act given 20 minutes to perform. Each band will be judged on a point system by Mozingo Music and 105.7 The Point. The top four scoring bands of the summer will be invited back to play on September 28th in the Battle at Busch finals for the grand prize package. Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

    HISTORY OF BARBERSHOP By David Krause and David Wright Definition of barbershop harmony. Read: Definition of Barbershop Harmony, from the Forward of the Contest and Judging Handbook. The Purpose Of This Course. We will attempt to trace the roots and the evolution of barbershop harmony from well before its actual beginnings up to the present. We will try to answer these questions: What were the tides of history which spawned the birth of the barbershop quartet, and what environment allowed this style of music to flourish? What were its musical forerunners? What are its defining characteristics? What other types of music were fostered contemporaneously, and how did they influence the growth of quartet singing? Which styles are similar, and how are they similar? How did the term "barbershop" arise? How long did the historical era of the barbershop quartet last? What other kinds of music sprang forth from it? Why did the style eventually need preservation? How was SPEBSQSA formed, and how did it become a national movement? What other organizations have joined the cause? How have they coped with the task of preservation? Are current day efforts still on course in preserving the style? How has the style changed since the Society was formed? We will spend the next few hours contemplating and attempting to answer these questions. Overtones. As barbershoppers, we are very conscious of the "ringing" effect which complements our singing. We consider it our reward for singing well- defined pitches in tune. The fact that a tone produced by a voice or an instrument is accompanied by a whole series of pitches in addition to the fundamental one which our ear most easily detects has been known for centuries.
